Inside the Storm
the Month of the Fire Rabbit

“The true ruler is like the sea”. Lao Tze
The power of the Fire Rabbit – which may make it sound like something from an Aardman movie – is the power of Yin Wood upon Yang Earth. The Rabbit prospers at the Dragon’s expense, the way that Yin Wood such as grass or foliage, feeds upon the nourishment of the Earth. Wood can only exist if there is Earth to feed upon as well as Water and the Fire of sunlight.

That relationship between Yin Wood and Yang Earth is termed kun/choi, just as is a man/woman relationship. Man is challenge, authority etc and Woman the prize or treasure. Not very 21st Century ideas which may make them mawkish but not necessarily inaccurate. So just as a Rabbit may win at business and war this month, so he may be lucky in love. As if you’re following, may a female Dragon.

The character of the month is constructive, aspirational and mobile; it boasts more helpful days (see 9th, 12th and 21st) and fewer dire ones (such as the 17th) than February. The light is growing.

A 4 lo shu month focuses on experimentation, invention  and discovery. 4 is the Eldest Daughter, Soen, the Wind, subtle but unbeatable. Spring suits her. This month, advances may be made with hardly anyone knowing: technological breakthroughs, sudden advances on the battlefield. There may be unexpected overtures in your own life.

The Hexagram of the month (Sun: Decrease) calls for more feeling and fewer opinions: our best first impulse in hard times may be to support others suffering. If you suddenly feel bleak, before you explain it in terms of your own story, consider whose it might be. And send help. We are all connected and it can be easy to miss the join. Sun is made up of the Mountain Trigram over Lake which can equally apply to commercial errors based on mixed motives. Are you in business for fun or profit? Can you have both? A downturn may be the time to join forces or seek outside advice.

Someone suggested that I have been reporting too much of the negative. That, I think is a matter of viewpoint. And anyway beyond my remit, I have to report what the symbols say not what I’d prefer. I’m here to suggest ways to make the best of hard times not pretend that they’re soft. As Oscar Wilde said “We are all of us in the gutter but some of us are looking at the stars”. If you can’t see that the world is in a precarious state you’re not paying attention. But wherever we stand let’s look at the stars together.

The Month of the Fire Rabbit, Animal by Animal:
These generic forecasts carry different nuance dependent upon whether this Animal rules your Year, Month, Day, Hour or Life House.

Rabbit (1951, 63, 75, 87, 99; births in March*, 5-7am & on certain days#) Romantic and money-making opportunities for Rabbit males

Dragon (1952, 64, 76, 88, 2000; births in April* 7-9am & on certain days#) Some reduction of assets; a time to lead

Snake (1941,53, 65, 77, 89; births in May*, 9-11am & on certain days#) Comfortable, prepare for big learning.

Horse (1942, 54, 66, 78, 90; births in June*, around midday & on certain days#) Short on resources and/or motivation. This too shall pass.

Sheep (1943, 55, 67, 79, 91; births in July*, 1-3pm & on certain days#) You belong. Again.

Monkey (1944, 56, 68, 80, 92; births in August*, 3-5pm & on certain days#) Your words are especially effective. Choose wisely.

Rooster (1945, 57, 69, 81, 93; births in September*, 5-7pm & on certain days#) Could be argumentative; check ego at door.

Dog (1946, 58, 70, 82, 94; births in October*, 7-9pm & on certain days#) Two forward, one back. Get flexible.

Pig (1947, 59, 71, 83, 95; births in November*, 9-11pm & on certain days#) Plans progressing; time to get bankrolled.

Rat (1948, 60, 72, 84, 96; births in December* 11pm-1am & on certain days#). You may have to speak up but don’t expect gratitude

Ox (1949, 61, 73, 85, 97; births in January*, 1-3am & on certain days#) Some hazards especially in relationship. Do not go gently.

Tiger (1950, 62, 74, 86, 98; births in February*, 3-5am & on certain days#) Floppy; best plan, plot, visualise.

* Chinese Months start later than European ones.
#You’ll need help or a Chinese Calendar for this.
A Helpful Day
Saturday 9th March, Water Monkey, Foundation, Initiate (6) ***** fresh
Deep discussion could deepen relationship or set up a profitable strategy. Best let conversation run; avoid dominating intervention, yours or theirs. Things start to open up today: “the birth of noble children and great material gain” are said to follow constructive acytivity today.
Favours: Monkey, Rat, Dragon, Snake, novelty.
Activity: South East for fresh ideas.

Not so Much
Sunday 17th March, Metal Dragon, Void, Remove (5) **** Still.
Caution: Dragons. Today may not repay investment. Mainly but not just Dragons btw.
Remember that exploitation is a matter of point of view. And choice. In win/lose (such as legal) situations Rabbits likely to win. Dispose of nothing casually.
Activity: Rat due North for comment and appraisal.
Favours: Rabbit in the short term only.

A Helpful Location
North, Communication: Star: 8 Month Star: 9 Month san sha
An 8:9 Star combination is generally very helpful. Here’s the place to settle this month especially if you belong to the East Group of ming kuas or are a Monkey, Dragon, Rat or Ox. As it’s the North, discussion and communication are the key. Because of the 9, expect a high profile.
To magnify/accelerate:add Earth eg substantial crystal or Fire eg constant bright light.

Not so Much
West, Intervention: Year Star: 5 Month Star: 6 Year Wu huang.                                       The West is not a great place for a door or a desk during the Wood Dragon Year, especially right now. Exit, evacuate. Not even Water alleviates this combination and Wood & Fire exacerbate. Older men, younger woman, everyone pretty much, best elsewhere. The 5 can dump and run because it is not invested. From time to time facing the 5 wu huang (which is in the West all year) can invigorate. The 5 is the power.
Adjust: t’ang lung addresses the 5.

Fire Tiger lo shu

*I am now listing the Hexagram corresponding to the particular month in question rather than the generic Tidal Gua. Put simply, Jia Ren corresponds specifically to a Fire Tiger rather than to just any Tiger.

Inside the Storm
the Month of the Fire Tiger

You have to pay to get out of going through all these things twice.Bob Dylan

By now everything is up and running again. The Tiger brings fresh energy following the torpor of the Ox Month. Projects that have been put to one side pick up. Truces and ceasefires, settlements and adjournments are mostly history. There are leaves on the acers and buds on the hazels; I’m told that a hazel rod (for dowsing) must be picked while the leaves are “smaller than a mouse’s ear” which indeed they are.

And of course a new Dragon year is starting; the Wood Dragon like all Dragons makes for activity. This is set like all Dragon Years to be an unsettled time and the Tiger hits the ground running. Best not to expect peace at home or abroad.

Meanwhile the mischievous Yang Metal 5 Yellow Wu Huang Star joins the 3 Yang Wood Star of the Year in the centre of this month’s lo shu or magic square. The 3 is a bull in a China shop, the 5 tends to make things worse. This month disputes pick up again following their winter layoff. 3 can be macho in a deeply unconscious manner. Best to watch for that within and without.

What may not be immediately obvious however is that the niggles and upsets of 2024 are more stubborn and more grudging than those of 2023. The Dragon is technically “poked” when it rules a year. So provocation is more easily assumed. And this applies not merely to Dragons but to us all and especially Dogs and Rabbits. And it leaves us with the option of being provoked or not. We do have a choice. As do our leaders. Provocation is a question of viewpoint.

The month Hexagram is Jia Ren “Members of the Family” which, as Hexagrams do, goes through six changes in the course of the month. The 4th of these, covering the week from the 21st to the 26th of February, is Tong Ren sometimes called “Union of Men”: this is the time that peace might be negotiated. There is a sliver of hope.

The new Stem and Branch or Pillar is the Fire Tiger.  Tigers are fierce, bold and visionary as a rule. Typically they are patient. And they never forget: not a slight nor a favour. We are all karmic loaded guns at the best of times, special care this month.

I’m teaching starter Ba Zi (or Four Pillars) and starter Classical feng shui live one-to-one  via Zoom – times and dates by mutual arrangement – all the time. Details from sheilaashworthfengshui@gmail.com

The Month of the Fire Tiger, Animal by Animal:
These generic forecasts carry different nuance dependent upon whether this Animal rules your Year, Month, Day, Hour or Life House.

Tiger (1950, 62, 74, 86, 98; births in February*, 3-5am & on certain days#) Not an easy year as others progress. Next couple of months are the best for you to make your mark.

Rabbit (1951, 63, 75, 87, 99; births in March*, 5-7am & on certain days#) Overwhelm may loom. Trust. Home’s best.

Dragon (1952, 64, 76, 88, 2000; births in April* 7-9am & on certain days#) Big tasks that you may be reluctant attend to. Gotta get started.

Snake (1941,53, 65, 77, 89; births in May*, 9-11am & on certain days#) Could feel a tad remote. This too shall pass.

Horse (1942, 54, 66, 78, 90; births in June*, around midday & on certain days#) Early acceleration. Think ahead, plan, consider alternatives.

Sheep (1943, 55, 67, 79, 91; births in July*, 1-3pm & on certain days#) You may feel pushed into places you’d prefer to avoid.

Monkey (1944, 56, 68, 80, 92; births in August*, 3-5pm & on certain days#) Directly opposed. A good time tp rest up.

Rooster (1945, 57, 69, 81, 93; births in September*, 5-7pm & on certain days#)A chance to get your act together before it matters too much.

Dog (1946, 58, 70, 82, 94; births in October*, 7-9pm & on certain days#) Pulled and pushed. Time to get flexible.

Pig (1947, 59, 71, 83, 95; births in November*, 9-11pm & on certain days#) Safe to follow up ambitious plans.

Rat (1948, 60, 72, 84, 96; births in December* 11pm-1am & on certain days#). Get (or put) it in writing now as the spoken word may be variously interpreted.

Ox (1949, 61, 73, 85, 97; births in January*, 1-3am & on certain days#) Surrender to the rhythm.

* Chinese Months start later than European ones.

A Helpful Day
Tuesday 6th February, Metal Rat, Wings, Open (1) *** frankness & disclosure
Metal Rat is about truths that are hard to spit out – whether out of squeamishness, compassion or fear of consequences – all of which probably boil down to the same thing. Not for scarpering or beating around the bush.
Activity: Dragon SE1 (around 134º ESE) to be appropriate to the moment.
Opening up assists: Monkey, Rat, Dragon,Ox, also those born on a Water or Earth Day who are reckoned to attract abundance within four months if they use the day constructively.
Schtum: Horse, Sheep

Not So Much
Thursday 15th February, Earth Rooster, Dipper, Danger (1) ***** expensive wisdom.
Travel likely and hazardous. Not the day to trumpet. Venture nothing too important. Time out maybe.
Activity: SE for accuracy.

A Helpful Location
South West, Accumulation: Year Star: 9 Month Star: 2 Moon (Sheep).
9:2 supports public exploits of women. Locate here in 2024 for desirable publicity. Favours Dragon, Rat, Horse, Snake, those born on a Metal Day. Great Advantage at kun (around 220º SW2)
Power up: Fire; e.g.bright light.

Not So Much
West, Intervention: Year Star: 5 Month Star: 7 Year Wu huang.                                         The West is not a great place for a door or a desk during the Wood Dragon Year, especially right now. Exit, evacuate. Not even Water alleviates this combination and Wood & Fire exacerbate. Younger women best elsewhere.
Adjust: t’ang lung addresses the 5.

Note: Directions are from the tai chi (ie heart of the property) Feng shui is a very personal thing, so generic advice needs to be applied with awareness of the underlying energy.

Good Timing

March 11, 2022

Good Timing

Selecting Auspicious and Personalised Dates,

One-day Zoom live Workshop with Richard Ashworth,

Saturday 25th (UK & Europe) 10a.m BST & Sunday 26th June (World) 3p.m.BST

Basic familiarity with Heavenly Stems & Earthly Branches required.

At 12:59pm on the 6th January 2021 Donald Trump’s followers stormed the Capitol: a very precise moment, observing many of the astrological and other indications of a day for a putsch. As indeed did the 24th February when Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine. In both cases a series of conventions appear to have been followed in keeping with the ancient art of ze ri or Date Selection, presumably in order to make the date fit the objective. Somebody knew what they were doing.

Making the date fit the objective of course is a useful procedure for more routine activities: choosing day for a house move, surgery or marriage for instance. Or you may simply want to have some idea of what the day ahead has in store.

I share something like this via Twitter, FaceBook & Linked In every day:

Fri 11th Mar, Water Pig, Neck, Success (3) ***** Generally favourable.

Very helpful including for placing long term Water. Water Pig doesn’t know how to seek assistance and Pig day pickles Pigs. Offering help wherever you see it needed, especially if unrequested, pays back 10-fold.

Activity: Rabbit due East for energy & persistence. Special assistance: Rabbit, Sheep, Horse. In any pillar.

All I’m doing here is assessing Stem & Branch, Daily Officer, Mansion of the Moon, Dong Gong and a variety of other considerations and then stirring in a pinch of woo-woo, intuition or what-have-you. Sometimes these notes written weeks ahead are eerily accurate. It requires attention but it’s not rocket science.

If you are interested in either daily forecasts or more ambitious prediction, this Zoom workshop will equip you with the tools. Which is where the real work starts of course.

If you have a working knowledge of Stems and Branches and would like to know more about letting good timing work for you, do contact: sheilaashworthfengshui@gmail.com

I hope to meet you then,

Best wishes,

Richard A.

Via Zoom only
Lasts approx. 6 hours with approx a 1 hour break.

Saturday 25th June will start at 10am (BST).

Sunday 26th June will start at 3pm (15:00 BST).

Water Rabbit lo shu
The Month of the Water Rabbit
The Tiger approaches the reactor.
You’ll have noticed that last month’s forecast was worryingly accurate. Frankly I could do without being right about such things.

Some words of comfort:
The current violence is the last kick of a way of running the world that is out of date.

Technically, during the Chinese 8th Fate Period which drops away between 2016 and 2024, power comes from the North East and travels South West. You might see that as quite literal: the bulk of Europe’s oil and gas come from Russia. You might also see it as consistent with the flight of any number of New Agers from Europe to South America around this time, my own niece among them.

Feng shui works on a variety of levels, as you know and this month’s suggestions have particularly international application. And obviously it’s fine to ignore the wider implications if your focus is personal, domestic or commercial.

In a fresh Tiger year like this one, that directional thrust is doubled up. But it doesn’t last.

The Rabbit Month can be one of accepting the damage done and the Water Rabbit Year of 2023 can be similar; there will be mending to do. The Dragon of April however brings transformation: what was always this way has always been another way. Let’s focus on that. Elsewhere in this bulletin I’ve shared some ideas as to how to address minimising the damage and hastening renewed peace.

FYI: The actual date of invasion – 24th February – was very similar in construction to the 6th January 2021 which you’ll recall brought a smaller incursion. My guess is that Putin and Trump share a Chinese Astrologer. Their ba zis are also strangely linked. But that’s for another day.

The burst of expansion from the North East has limited life-expectancy. The Dragon of April brings transformation. Meanwhile the Water Rabbit presides over the final gasp of misused power. Like you, I regret that anyone has had to go through that.
Richard Ashworth 4th March 2022.

The Month of the Water Rabbit, Animal by Animal:
These generic forecasts carry different nuances dependent upon whether this Animal rules your Year, Month, Day, Hour or Life House.

Rabbit (1951, 63, 75, 87, 99; births in March*, 5-7am & on certain days#), Could be scary. You have just as much power as you need. Pace yourself.

Dragon (1952, 64, 76, 88, 2000; births in April* 7-9am & on certain days#) Employed or exploited is simply a question of approach.

Snake (1941,53, 65, 77, 89; births in May*, 9-11am & on certain days#) Confusing; on the wrong end of proxy disputes. Practise fairness and informed judgement.

Horse (1942, 54, 66, 78, 90; births in June*, around midday & on certain days#) stops and starts; that’s just for now. Put top tasks on hold if necessary.

Sheep (1943, 55, 67, 79, 91; births in July*, 1-3pm & on certain days#) demand fair reward, be aware of unprofitable blandishment.

Monkey (1944, 56, 68, 80, 92; births in August*, 3-5pm & on certain days#) less resistance than before, drive carefully just the same.

Rooster (1945, 57, 69, 81, 93; births in September*, 5-7pm & on certain days#) Under-promise, over-deliver for a smooth-running month.

Dog (1946, 58, 70, 84, 96; births in October*, 7-9pm & on certain days#) Could be torn between paths, tasks, jobs, careers, lovers. Choice is yours.

Pig (1947, 59, 71, 83, 95; births in November*, 9-11pm & on certain days#) Multiple pulls: artistic/administrative risk/play safe. Risk may pay off.

Rats (1948, 60, 72, 84, 96; births in December* 11pm-1am & on certain days#). Parental issues – both ways round. Or more.

Ox (1949, 61, 73, 85, 97; births in January*, 1-3am & on certain days#) Observe, mind your own business, don’t overestimate your influence.

Tiger (1950, 62, 74, 86, 98; births in February*, 3-5am & on certain days#) Traffic flowing better. Possible hiccups – think ahead, detach. Danger of over-reach.
* Chinese Solar Months start later than European ones. #You’ll need help or a Chinese Calendar for this.

Special Days in March:
Especially helpful

Friday 11th March, Water Pig, Neck, Success (3) ***** Generally favourable.
Very helpful including for placing long term Water. Water Pig doesn’t know how to seek assistance and Pig day pickles Pigs. A day to offer help wherever you see it needed, especially if unrequested.
Activity: Rabbit due East for energy & persistence.
Special assistance: Rabbit, Sheep, Horse.
In any pillar.

Not so helpful.
Tuesday 15th March, Fire Rabbit, Tail, Establish (7) *** false dawn.
One more push perhaps but not too soon. Some serendipity for those in need of Fire or Wood. Seek that which has been ignored or appears restless.
Activity: North West to draw attention.
Caution: Dragon, Rooster.

Where to locate in March
North East, Wealth Star: Tai sui (Tiger) or Year Star: 8 Month Star: 4.
This month the NE is best suited to two things:
1. Learning, research and investigation, especially if there are shaped conifers to the exterior; you can place miniatures on the window sill if not. These are termed “education trees” and mimic the shape of a calligrapher’s brush.
2. That windowsill is also where you might put a Ukrainian flag as part of a procedure known as “metonymy”, placing a miniature of the place to be affected on the compass point concerned. Qin Shi Huang Di of Terracotta Army fame was a big user of metonymy while he was setting China up for longterm unification 2200 years ago. Seemed to work.

Where not to locate in March
South, Bright Future: Year Star: 9 Month Star: 5.
Poor star combination this month: the 9 magnifies and the 5 brings all kinds of no good. Best not to linger South. Or by analogy, to seek attention, as embarrassment rather than celebrity is the likely outcome.
Mitigate: t’ang lung or Metal

Water Tiger Month Lo Shu

The Month of the Water Tiger
So now a Water Tiger Month opens a Water Tiger Year; a double dose of restless yang Wood and a foreshadowing of the year itself which of course is full of problems global, social and domestic that call for urgent attention. You can observe the changes day by day as the month wears on. They may offer some inkling as to the progress of the whole year. But it’s a year and month of big challenge.

The Tiger is fierce, patient and farsighted. Tiger Mother is for instance a byword for tough love. The Tiger is yang Wood which means it moves fast and much, in between periods of stillness. The Tiger’s time is first and second thing, when rest turns to motion. We prepare for and enter the day and by some accounts the Year, with the Tiger. Expect rapid movement and rapid change this month and expect it to be reflected in the year as a whole. This year we solve, mitigate or ignore the twin challenges of climate change and inequality, two puzzles which may distil to the same essence.

The Tiger sits in the North East which is where the most powerful energy originates this year, like a gale blowing South West. The term usually employed for the presiding Animal is tai sui or Great Year, a year, if you will, of twelve years. Just as the Tiger Month marks the return of vitality and birth, so a Tiger Year ends the long Winter of the last three years. We are emerging into light and motion. Optimism is not beyond reach.

As this Month and Year are Water Tigers, Wood predominates. Water gives birth to Wood, allows it to grow, for the limbs to flex and journeys to proceed. We know our plants are alive because they are moving, that is growing. This is true only of Wood: animals don’t grow forever, stones and ponds don’t grow at all. Wood is in constant motion, feeding on Water, the resources of the Earth and the Fire of the Sun.

The centre of the luo shu (or magic square) of Year and Month hold respectively the wu huang or 5 Yellow and the motherly 2. Some read this conjunction as sickness. Best anyway to stay away from centres, HQs, capitals and the tai chi. Has there ever been a more clear indication from the universe to work from home if you can?  Nonetheless I’m more inclined to focus on the 2’s nurturing and concern, she is yin Earth, the Universal Mother.

And on the sheer power of the 5 Star. The Tao doesn’t appear to have a moral or indeed any other kind of viewpoint, so damage is surely not what the wu huang represents. The 5 is more like a nuclear power station: we want warm Water but best not sit on the reactor. Translated for domestic use: face the tai chi but don’t occupy it.

The Hexagram* common to Year and Month is Number 13 Tong Ren, Union of Men, a call to assembly and common purpose. That’s the only way we’re going to get through this.
Monthly Book of Changes Interpretation Workshops start early March. Join us.

*ie specific to the Water Tiger rather than all Tigers.

The Month of the Water Tiger, Animal by Animal:
These generic forecasts carry different nuances dependent upon whether this Animal rules your Year, Month, Day, Hour or Life House.

Tiger (1950, 62, 74, 86, 98; births in February*, 3-5am & on certain days#) Fully charged; start making plans that take you into 2024. And act upon them.

Rabbit (1951, 63, 75, 87, 99; births in March*, 5-7am & on certain days#) Demanded of; perhaps overly but rising to it takes you places you had only dreamed of.

Dragon (1952, 64, 76, 88, 2000; births in April* 7-9am & on certain days#) Yield to make progress; truth is at premium.

Snake (1941,53, 65, 77, 89; births in May*, 9-11am & on certain days#) Waking from slumber empowered. Pick up the threads. Some hindrance.

Horse (1942, 54, 66, 78, 90; births in June*, around midday & on certain days#) Fully powered; use power wisely and ensure its longevity.

Sheep (1943, 55, 67, 79, 91; births in July*, 1-3pm & on certain days#) If you enter with good intentions so will everybody else.

Monkey (1944, 56, 68, 80, 92; births in August*, 3-5pm & on certain days#) facing into the prevailing wind; tack and you progress.

Rooster (1945, 57, 69, 81, 93; births in September*, 5-7pm & on certain days#) You may feel kind of irrelevant; you’re not but you may be distracted.

Dog (1946, 58, 70, 84, 96; births in October*, 7-9pm & on certain days#) Directed, focused: run!

Pig (1947, 59, 71, 83, 95; births in November*, 9-11pm & on certain days#) Full steam ahead; expect support, serendipity and the legacy of your best behaviour.

Rats (1948, 60, 72, 84, 96; births in December* 11pm-1am & on certain days#). 3rd party disputes. Easy to waste time. Unhelpful distractions.

Ox (1949, 61, 73, 85, 97; births in January*, 1-3am & on certain days#) Time to rest & trust as the year unfolds in ways that are hard to scry. Breaks come & go, pay attention.
* Chinese Months start later than European ones. # You’ll need help or a Chinese Calendar for this
Special Days in February:

Especially helpful

Sunday 13th February, Fire Rooster, House, Danger (4) **** Risky.
Quid pro quo; don’t price yourself out of the market but don’t sell yourself short either.
Activity: not today.
Special Favour:
Earth(89) Metal(41) Water(53) Snake
All Oxen,
All Dragons, the flexible.
In any Pillar

Not so helpful.

Monday 7th February, Metal Rabbit, Bow, Remove (7) ***** Hurried.
Yin Wood in Yang Wood Month & Year – just too much. Danger of overwhelm. Do as little as necessary & be kind to yourself.
Activity:     NW for assistance.
Favours:     no one much.

Where to locate in February

East, Ambition: Year Star: 3 Month Star: 9. Sun (Rabbit E2),
Young men flourish this month, especially Pigs and especially here in the East where Wood is at its purest. Kuas 3, 4 & 9 probably gain most: promotions, accomplishment and recognition. Again settle here to get a job done; rise early, decorate with Wood i.e. live plants – three is a good number. Add Water, even a fountain and perhaps blue décor) plus Wood e.g three leafy plants. Don’t overheat.

Where not to locate in February

North East, Wealth Star: Tai sui (Tiger) or Year Star: 8 Month Star: 5.
As tricky as the North East gets this year. You should only be occupying NE2 or NE3 (ie approx 40-65º NE) anyway. East Group decamp South, West Group South West. There will nonetheless be days of great creativity here this month, principally the 5th & 23rd.
Reduce negative impact: with t’ang lung, Chue cure for the wu huang.

Only in Dreams: Divining from the Book of Changes in 2022

January 19, 2022

Only in Dreams – Deeper into the Book of Changes.

Monthly One-Hour Group Zoom Sessions in 2022/23

The story is told that one warm afternoon the sage Zhuang Tze dreamed that he was a butterfly.  We are not told quite what that experience may have been like but what we do know is that henceforth he claimed to be uncertain whether he was a philosopher awoken from a dream or a butterfly dreaming he was Zhuang Tze.

We sleep perhaps one third of our lives. And some of us get quite excited about the meanings of our dreams. But what about the other two thirds? If the universe is talking to us why would it limit itself to the waking hours?

The diviner, by which I mean someone who interprets the messages the universe sends us from time to time, may employ any of a number of methods: palmistry, tarot cards, runes, crystals, flame and water and a thousand others. But perhaps the most accessible is the Yi or Book of Changes, sometimes called the I Ching.

Starting March 2nd 2022 I will be hosting a series of twelve monthly group Zoom sessions of divination by way of the Yi.

These sessions will come from a very different place than last year’s more academic series. We will be using the Yi to interpret the waking dream,

Life is made up of dilemmas; we solve one, we progress to the next, sometimes we get stuck. The Yi consists of sixty four images or guas, each of which reflects a human experience, often a quandary. Number 34 for instance Da Zhuang marks a moment of great but passing power. How do we employ it? Can we retain it? What mistakes are we most likely to make? Is there assistance available?

Each session will be an hour long, the format will be very simple: two participants bring to each session for interpretation a Hexagram they have cast. We will aim to make sense of the readings by looking at structure as well as traditional and other meanings and taking the odd leap in the dark. At first it will be mostly me, I expect, but by the twelfth one I’m anticipating we’ll all be pitching in. Join us.

The cost will be £375, for the series of 12 Zoom sessions;

Early Bird (payable by February 1st) £350.

Metal Rat Month Lo Shu.

The least we can do is wave to each other.
(Peter Hammill.)

Of all months the Rat is the one when we are most likely to socialise. Even if we aren’t attending office parties this year we are at least likely to be with family. That’s what the Rat is for: communication and connection before we return to the hurly burly. The sequence of the energies of the year has run its course from the stirring Wood of the Tiger last February via the hurry of the Fire Months and the cut and thrust of Autumn, to now, the time of conclusions. Now we talk. Even if only via a screen.

The Rat is the premier talker but also the keeper of secrets. This is yin and yang. The Rat on the Beam, high above the dinner guests as they exchange indiscretions, as well as the Chair of the Public Meeting. Rat has an agenda and if you haven’t, the Rat will tend to promote theirs. That makes this a month to engage but also one to consider your words before parting with them. And to listen.

Rat* is capable of the most profound communication. But may nonetheless not make regular use of that capacity. Water stands for deep feelings but not necessarily their expression.. And if we’re not sharing our true feelings we don’t know each other at all. Which is risky. What’s for sure though is that ultimately relationship is all there is.

See you in ’22.

The Month of the Metal Rat, Animal by Animal:
These generic forecasts carry different nuances dependent upon whether this Animal rules your Year, Month, Day, Hour or Life House.

Rats (1948, 60, 72, 84, 96; births in December* 11pm-1am & on certain days#). Open mouth but also ears in what will be a talkative month.

Ox (1949, 61, 73, 85, 97; births in January*, 1-3am & on certain days#) A blast of power till February opens. You can still dictate the order of things.

Tiger (1950, 62, 74, 86, 98; births in February*, 3-5am & on certain days#) If anything, over-powered, at a time when you need to slow down for a while. Avoid additional commitment for now.

Rabbit (1951, 63, 75, 87, 99; births in March*, 5-7am & on certain days#) acknowledge resentment and take responsibility. Tap into the rising Tiger.

Dragon (1952, 64, 76, 88, 2000; births in April* 7-9am & on certain days#) Empowered and emboldened for the time being. Take smaller risks. Begin to re-think 2022.

Snake (1941,53, 65, 77, 89; births in May*, 9-11am & on certain days#) Quiet suits you this month; re-charge; it all works out.

Horse (1942, 54, 66, 78, 90; births in June*, around midday & on certain days#) Enthusiasm for your wilder designs is dampened. Probably for the best.

Sheep (1943, 55, 67, 79, 91; births in July*, 1-3pm & on certain days#) Interference likely; if you can’t avoid Christmas with the in-laws, approach it gingerly.

Monkey (1944, 56, 68, 80, 92; births in August*, 3-5pm & on certain days#) Play – 2022 tests you. Be ready. Know which Pillar is which.

Rooster (1945, 57, 69, 81, 93; births in September*, 5-7pm & on certain days#) Hard to keep up; you did before, you’ll do it again.

Dog (1946, 58, 70, 84, 96; births in October*, 7-9pm & on certain days#) If the way is blocked, notice that it’s you blocking it.

Pig (1947, 59, 71, 83, 95; births in November*, 9-11pm & on certain days#) all a bit too much. Discern between opportunity and distraction; both likely this month. * Chinese Months start later than European ones. # You’ll need help or a Chinese Calendar for this.

Special Days in December:
Especially helpful
Friday 10th December Water Dragon, Ghost, Stable (2) **** Nostalgic.
Water Dragon made even more eloquent in a Rat Month; a day to draw lessons from the past. Don’t leap into action just yet. Do discuss to the nth.
Activity: Monkey SW3 (WSW around 240º) for company.
Magic in the air: Monkey, Rat, Rooster in any Pillar. Could crowd Dragons.

Not so helpful.
Tuesday 21st December, Water Rabbit, Tail, Balance, (4) **** Dallying.
A glimpse of 2023. Focus is on the domestic with some serendipity and a taste of delayed justice. Could be romantic or at least poetic. Again April 7-9a.m., May 9-11a.m. & so on.
Hinders: Dragons, Roosters, those who won’t adapt.
Activity: Sheep SW (SSW around 205º) for helpful reflection.

Where to locate in December
West, Intervention: Year Star:8; Month Star:6.
Both helpful Stars. 1:6:8 incorporates three beneficial Stars offering mutual support: the Earth of the 8 fuels the Metal of the 6 which in turn feeds the Water of the 1. Occupy, enhance with revelry; Dui the Trigram of the West likes a good time. Partaaaay.
Maximise: Water:prosperous 1:6:8. Add blue or bowl of Water change daily.

Where not to locate in December
South East, Determination: Year Star:5 Month Star:3. Annual Wu huang. Moon (Dragon SE1) Money and other loss. Still a very poor place for anything fruitful.
Mitigate all year: t’ang lung.

Pig Month lo shu

That which has always been one way has always been another.
Transformation is not bound to any form”  The Great Commentary.

The Pig is the most versatile of the Chinese Zodiac Animals; people born under this sign (in any Pillar) are often spoiled for choice between talents. And in the Tiger Year they will be among the most favoured. This is partly because of the Pig’s special relationship with the Tiger; technically they combine to make Wood. Both are made stronger by this, the Tiger more fierce, the Pig more creative. And now the first signs of the Tiger year are with us.

As it happens this month for the above and other reasons, brings the first seeds of the New Year. The Qi which has been dipping since shortly before the peak of Fire at the Summer Solstice, turns around on the 12th. It is a way away yet but Spring is coming. Can you feel it?

The only constant of course is change. Here in Godalming, last night brought the first frost, a hard one, the car needed scraping this morning and the leaves on the budleia were stiff as parchment. The tropical plants are safe inside now and the effect upon vegetables as yet undug will vary. Just as we see the first traces of the distant Spring, the ground becomes concrete.

The Earth Pig of this month however is not the most flexible of the Pigs; that’s yin Earth for you, likes to stick to the point. Not always such a bad idea. And this 5 Month brings some kind of reckoning as the Nine Stars return to their homes. That’s another way in which this month brings a taste of 2022.

In my Tiger Year Forecast Day, on the 4th and 5th of December I will be elaborating on the likely shape, trends and portents of 2022, as the underlying Qi changes. What’s coming down the pike with the Water Tiger of 2022? For your home, yourself, your livelihood and the World beyond? I also become available for Zoom Tune-Ups from January 17.

The world changes and that which has always been one way has always been another.
Richard Ashworth 3rd November 2021.
The Month of the Earth Pig, Animal by Animal:
These generic forecasts carry different nuances dependent upon whether this Animal rules your Year, Month, Day, Hour or Life House.

Pig (1947, 59, 71, 83, 95; births in November*, 9-11pm & on certain days#) You may find advice and even assistance insufferable. Reconsider, I should.

Rats (1948, 60, 72, 84, 96; births in December* 11pm-1am & on certain days#). Frustrating and pre-climactic.

Ox (1949, 61, 73, 85, 97; births in January*, 1-3am & on certain days#) The blocks feel so much bigger because they are new to you.

Tiger (1950, 62, 74, 86, 98; births in February*, 3-5am & on certain days#) Ambivalent: simultaneously empowered and impeded. Note the first, accept the second.

Rabbit (1951, 63, 75, 87, 99; births in March*, 5-7am & on certain days#) Protect & include the Sheep. 2nd consecutive month with romantic possibilities. Value yourself.

Dragon (1952, 64, 76, 88, 2000; births in April* 7-9am & on certain days#) Less resistant, more perverse than last month; play to your strengths.

Snake (1941,53, 65, 77, 89; births in May*, 9-11am & on certain days#) Opposed; tack, steer into the skid. It may take you where you need to go.

Horse (1942, 54, 66, 78, 90; births in June*, around midday & on certain days#) Third party disputes. Stick to your guns and the point.

Sheep (1943, 55, 67, 79, 91; births in July*, 1-3pm & on certain days#) Help at last. Liaise with Rabbits; this may mean networking from home. Accept help.

Monkey (1944, 56, 68, 80, 92; births in August*, 3-5pm & on certain days#) Proxy fights; declare peace pre-emptively.

Rooster (1945, 57, 69, 81, 93; births in September*, 5-7pm & on certain days#) Some kind of sacrifice called for to avoid greater loss..

Dog (1946, 58, 70, 84, 96; births in October*, 7-9pm & on certain days#) Some gain but choose your day(s) – the better ones are later in the month.
* Chinese Months start later than European ones. # You’ll need help or a Chinese Calendar for this.

Special Days in November:
Especially helpful

Wed 1st December, Water Sheep, Wall, Success (2) Opening
Barriers come down. There’s a pull to the heart of things both in the nature of this Sheep and in the 5 Star that rules the month. Resist or succumb, but notice.
Activity: Sheep SW1 (around 205º SSW) to be fully involved.
Favours:  best able to make use.
Earth(59) Metal(71)Pig.
Earth(99) Metal(51) Rabbit      all in any Pillar
Wood(55) Sheep.
Water(42) Horse.

Not so helpful.

Wed 17th November, Earth Snake, Carriage, Destruction (6)  Stay put.
Mischievous; attempting to harness today’s undoubted power is likely to be misguided; it’s all going on beneath the surface. Not for travel. Positive change follows acceptance.
Favours: no one much.
Activity: tai chi for patience.
Where to locate in November
North East, Wealth Star: Tai sui/Year Star: 9; Month Star: 8.
Healthy and wealthy. The 8 blesses, the 9 magnifies: all things being equal, this is where to be this month. Metal ming kuas (ie 6 & 7) may gain most along with Tigers and Rats. It may be the best place for the Pig too.
Maximise: with Fire: bright light 24/7.

Where not to locate in November
South East, Determination: Year Star: 5 Month Star: 4. Annual Wu huang.

Stupefying; stay away for another couple of months yet. Facing South East remains helpful.
Mitigate all year: t’ang lung.

Hungry Ghosts Amongst Us.
We are the Martians.” Nigel Kneale Quatermass & the Pit.
News Flash: there is a global conspiracy after all. It consists of around two thousand billionaires whose objective is simply to make more money at whatever cost. At whatever cost that is, to the Earth or to you and me. Obviously enough they have not coordinated to smash the status quo that enriches them or unleashed microbes to which they are of course as vulnerable as the rest of us. They simply exploit whatever crisis brings further wealth. They know when melt comes to flood, that there is enough high ground for them. But even that is probably not enough. And if any seventy or so changed their activity tomorrow, the threat of climate change would be all but over.

The 7th Lunar Month which opens on the 8th August is traditionally the Time of the Hungry Ghosts: souls who have passed on but not passed away. They hover about us, frustrated and mean, in death as in life, they are voracious – for food, sex, money and possessions. They are said to inhabit a half-world where nothing is physical and no appetite can be met.

The usual proscriptions against the Hungry Ghosts are to stay away from hospitals, cemeteries, funerals, votive offerings and candles. And indeed open spaces such as beaches and parks. Which is a tall order anywhere, but quite a condition when you consider that much of Europe decamps to just such open spaces for most of August.

A cockroach is said to be able to survive for a fortnight on a fingerprint but billions are not enough for billionaires. They always need more. Their needs are as prodigious as their wealth: affable scrounger Richard Branson, Jeff Bezos the world’s worst employer, armchair fascist Elon Musk; not content with fortunes aggregating massively at our expense during the current unpleasantness, ride their phallic symbols into the stratosphere while Covid rages beneath them. In vaccine-starved India and sub-Saharan Africa a fraction of their wealth would save legions. These are hungry ghosts.

Like you I consume: food, drink, fmcgs, cars, laptops, paper, firmware. And like you I do my bit: re-cycling, reusing, buying from the right producers, shunning the wrong ones, avoiding meat and dairy and so on. And I’ve spent most of my life trying to do good. But I wield little power.

I don’t necessarily subscribe to literal ghosts, hungry or full, other than as obstacles in mental, emotional or physical space. Nor indeed am I convinced by karma as a cosmic balancing system. But what I do see in Mustique, in Acapulco, in Davos and Palm Beach is the near end of a long queue. Tread carefully; best not to join it.

The Month of the Fire Monkey, Animal by Animal:
These generic forecasts carry different nuances dependent upon whether this Animal rules your Year, Month, Day, Hour or Life House.

Monkey (1944, 56, 68, 80, 92; births in August*, 3-5pm & on certain days#) Empowered now both with the calculating nous of the Metal Ox but also your own. Don’t overstep.

Rooster (1945, 57, 69, 81, 93; births in September*, 5-7pm & on certain days#) Overpowered so lower sights and allow completion, plan, build resources.

Dog (1946, 58, 70, 84, 96; births in October*, 7-9pm & on certain days#) Resources drawn upon just when you’re trying to recuperate. Go with it.

Pig (1947, 59, 71, 83, 95; births in November*, 9-11pm & on certain days#) You may be ignored for now; it all picks up in November.

Rats (1948, 60, 72, 84, 96; births in December* 11pm-1am & on certain days#). Your tongue is the most free it’s been all year; listen to what you have to say.

Ox (1949, 61, 73, 85, 97; births in January*, 1-3am & on certain days#) Your grip on the agenda may loosen but it’s only temporary. You have three more months of power.

Tiger (1950, 62, 74, 86, 98; births in February*, 3-5am & on certain days#) Opposed; tack into the facing wind; kun, power, challenge & discipline: all the same stuff.

Rabbit (1951, 63, 75, 87, 99; births in March*, 5-7am & on certain days#) August kind of passes you by; time to plan and to order priorities. Be of service as you are able.

Dragon (1952, 64, 76, 88, 2000; births in April* 7-9am & on certain days#) More power than you’ve wielded most of the year; clear up misunderstandings, heal, act, plan.

Snake (1941,53, 65, 77, 89; births in May*, 9-11am & on certain days#) Argumentative more than likely; be sure to complete any dispute.

Horse (1942, 54, 66, 78, 90; births in June*, around midday & on certain days#) Creative, successful, profitable but not without effort.

Sheep (1943, 55, 67, 79, 91; births in July*, 1-3pm & on certain days#) Difficult choices are presented; every door that opens closes many more. And vice-versa of course.
* Chinese Months start later than European ones. # You’ll need help or a Chinese Calendar for this.

Special Days in August:

Especially helpful

8th  August          Earth Rat, Void, Stable (1)              ***     Quite favourable
Earth Rat’s foot may be in their mouth; possibly self-inflicted – ultimately always the case – possibly inserted from outside. Frankness rules – pretty literally. Change is positive but undramatic. Relationship the key issue.
New Moon: 14:50pm for initiation. Moon bathe helpful crystals.
Favours: Monkey, Rat, Dragon, Ox.
Activity: tai chi (centre) for intimacy.
Special help:  for discussion, deliberation, co-operation,
Wood(44) Fire(56) Earth(68) Metal(80) Monkey
Earth(48) Metal(60) Water(72) Rat;
Wood(64) Dragon Wood(85) Ox

Not so helpful.

15th August         Wood Sheep, Pleiades, Closed (3)             *****   Very poor
Wood Sheep challenges the Metal Ox of the Year; argumentative, underhand; differences of creed, belief and dogma. “To build today would be like letting a buffalo into a paddy field.” Derek Walters. Break-ups possible if you stay up too late. Trust. Be prepared to ignore your own opinion.
Especially challenged:           Rat, Ox, Dog; walk away.
Activity:                                  Sheep SW1(SSW) around 205º SW.
Special help: in concilation.
Wood(95) Fire(47) Earth(59) Metal(71) Pig.
Earth(99) Metal(51) Water(63) Rabbit;
Wood(55) Sheep;
Earth(78) Metal(90) Water(42) Horse.

Where to locate in August
Tai chi, Home, the centre: Year Star: 6 Month Star: 8
The 8 is yang Earth. Traditionally, such a combination with the Metal 6 is enhanced by the addition of a 1 (that means Water) to create the auspicious Water-Metal-Earth triad 1:6:8. It’s a time of wealth and accretion. Perhaps a time of relief from the extraordinary troubles of the 3rd decade of the 21st Century. The authoritative 6 and the benign 8 coinciding at the centre of things also implies relative wisdom among our leaders. Perhaps exhaustion has set in.
Activate: Water – a bowl changed daily or even a temporary fountain. And occupy – the space not the Water.

Where not to locate in August
South West, Accumulation:
Year Star: 3 Dragon Virtue (Monkey) Month Star: 5. Monthly Wu Huang
3 and 5 will cost you money if nothing else; it’s a classic “money out” conjunction. Another view is that since we are in the maternal South West, the Mother (SW) and Eldest Son (3) are at odds. And again Metal (ie Father) will mitigate. Some months the same themes emerge everywhere.
Reduce impact: Metal: 6 pipe Metal windchime, Metal stuff.
