Forecast Day for the Metal Rat Year 2020

October 11, 2019

2020, Who moved my Cheese?

The Watershed Year of the Metal Rat.

All shall be well and all manner of things shall be well.”

Julian of Norwich.

On Saturday December 7th & Sunday December 8th I’ll be forecasting the Metal Rat Year online via Zoom. Very easy to join btw – we just send you a link and you click. No prior knowledge of Chinese metaphysics required.

2020, A Watershed Year.

A Master once said that feng shui is like poker; the trick is to capitalise when the force is with you and play safe when it isn’t. That is as true at home as it is at work, as true domestically as globally; as true in the sphere of relationship as in the sphere of health. And in the demanding year that beckons, especially so.

The saying goes that the only constant is change and during the workshop we will be discussing what changes are coming with the New Chinese New Year. Where should you locate for best advantage? Which Animals are set to prosper, which to consolidate and what is to be done about it? Also what is the likely trend of world events? How do we best respond?

So what’s on the cards?

Metal Rats are watershed years. You might remember 1960 when there was a brand new US President. They say that politics is showbiz for ugly people and all that glamour and youth in the White House was a new thing indeed. 1960 of course ushered in the “Swinging Sixties”, a new age of personal freedoms. Meanwhile Rachel Carson was writing “Silent Spring” the earliest account of the damage we are doing to the planet.

A Metal Rat year is a grinder, a melting pot. The archetype, Harry Harrison’s Stainless Steel Rat is possessed of sharp teeth and tongue, he’s cynical and opportunistic but ultimately on the side of the angels. These qualities pervade the year: much change, some drastic, all of which can add up to gains, given nimble feet. It’s unlikely to be an easy one for the most part but we’ll aim to point you in the right directions to make the best use of it.

We will be looking closely at the fortunes of each Animal; every year brings winners as well as losers: each of your Month, Day and Hour of Birth are ruled by a Zodiac Animal as is your Year, as you know. Dragons are mostly boosted in 2020 for instance but even if your birth was not in 1952, 64, 76, 88 or 2000, it may have been on a Dragon Day, a Dragon Hour or a Dragon Month.

We will look closely at this, so be sure to have all four of your Four Pillars to hand. As each Pillar relates to a different area of your activity, it may well be that a Horse of 1954, 1966 or 1978 say, who might otherwise expect a thin time was born on an Ox day which implies an increase in personal power.

We’ll be looking of course at the fresh patterns of energy; The New Year qi dictates new areas to work and sleep and create. The tai sui (that is the most powerful feng shui energy) will be coming in from due North this time. We won’t be facing that way even if it’s one of our personal best directions; that would be like wilfully facing a tempest. But we will be locating and facing in directions, month by month, where we can expect a following wind.

What else will we learn?

We’ll consider what’s likely to happen where and when; Last year the map indicated trouble in the straits of Hormuz. That was on the button – for which I take no credit; it’s just careful drafting. This year we’ll look again. We’ll see how we are ourselves affected as well as what we can do to help.

We’ll trace the progress of the year by way of the Book of Changes; the Four Hexagrams of the year allow us to track the ebb and flow of the prevailing energy, week by week as it peaks and falls.

We’ll look at the indications of Qi Men Dun Jia, the cutting edge of Chinese divination, for some magical dates that you can employ.

All things are cyclical.

As rain follows sun, so light comes after darkness. Based on the Gan Zi Cycle which has been guiding Chinese Diviners for most of four millennia, I’ve been predicting financial collapse in 2020 for the best part of a decade. Now I’m not even outspoken. We are however additionally facing drastic environmental change as well as multiple extinctions and various forms of tyranny.

But the other side of collapse is renewal. All over the world resistance to careless authority and poor maintenance of the planet is popping up. Again, as I noted a decade ago. You won’t remember the Metal Rats of 1900, 1840, 1720 or 1660 (all of which offer indications) but the reassurance that the Gan Zi Cycle offers is that everything is cyclical. All shall be well and all manner of things shall be well.

We’ll see what we can do, personally, socially, at work and at play to emerge into 2020 with a bright future and a healthier planet. Join us.

Animal by Animal
During this Water Rooster Month,
The Rooster is challenged to rise to the occasion,
The Dog takes up others’ challenges valuable,
The Pig remains delicate.
The Rat may only be at half-power,
The Ox receives as she gives,
The Tiger returns,
The Rabbit searches his heart,
The Dragon is back in the hot seat,
Support for the Snake may remain double-edged,
The Horse can see the breaks,
The Sheep holds back,
while
Monkey finds it all a bit anti-climactic.

A 4 month                        brings intelligence, curiosity & invention.
The Rooster month      is primarily concerned with the visible.
Most helpful location:  North, South.
Least helpful location: North West
Favoured Animals:       Snake, Rooster, Ox, Dragon.
Especially challenged: Rabbit, Dog, Sheep, Pig.

For action this MonthThere are literally one or two places left on my on-line live Book of Changes Workshops 19th & 20th October. Contact us on if you’d like to join. sheilaashworthfengshui@gmail.com.
No prior knowledge of Chinese  Metaphysics, folklore or other mumbo-jumbo required.

Look & Listen: the Water Rooster Month, 2019.
A superior personality will have a view of the real sentiments of the great mass of humanity and thus cannot be deceived.” The Book of Changes Hexagram 20.

Message to Rooster: when the superficial seems enough, dig deeper.

A Rooster Month in a Pig Year is likely to bring some sort of relief following the antics of the Monkey Month. Wilful foolishness was the keynote then but this month is likely to bring both doubling down and apology. Awareness of error is a good place to start rebuilding and the Rooster brings some consciousness as to what sort of figure we have been cutting.

Such a revelation can be mortifying and offer a choice between repeating ourselves shamelessly or waking up. These kinds of trends have been clear in public life but possibly more subtle at home or at work. Opportunities to heal may present themselves in a similar way. This may prove easiest for Dragons and hard for Rabbits – perhaps you have been pampered or blinkered. The rest of us are somewhere in between.

Follow the suggestions about where you locate particularly carefully this month (pp5&6) and pay special attention to the days when you have a special edge (p4); if any of the Animals of the Four pillars of your ba zi are here you have an opening. Use it – these dates take hours of calculation and I’m not making this stuff up.

Interestingly one aspect of this and the 4 at the heart of September’s magic square may see female candidates for US President falter; it’ll be the end of the road for several. But not all. Western woman, as the Dalai Lama suggested, will save the world yet.

Note: this is all very simplistic. No astrological analysis can do you full justice and always having choice, you are as a wise man once said to me, the camera not the crisis. Nothing I nor anyone else can advise frees you from the need to make decisions.

The best way to wring value from these brief prognostications, remains to identify Month, Day & Hour Animal as well as that for your Year. Your ba zi is a unique cocktail of these and it’s as unlikely that all four are compromised at any given time as it is that they are all blessed. If in doubt seek an expert.

Where to be in September.
Summary: growth and gain.
South, Bright Future: Year Star: 3 Dragon Virtue Month Star: 8.
3 & 8 make Wood enabling a late resurgence of Summer Fire. So if you locate here or face South, expect attention. Such attention may have to be earned but be ready for it; consider perhaps how you’ve ducked it before. Even if you think that’s the last thing you’ve been doing; attachment gets in the way for most of us. East Group kuas 4, 3, 1, 9 such as 1988 Earth Dragons & 1952 Water Dragons (I’ve written about these elsewhere) get breaks against the odds but anyone can earn approval here.
Encourage: Wood (ie plants) also open space.

Where not to be in September.
Summary: all sorts of unhelpful
North West, Authority: Year Star: 9 tai sui Month Star: 5.
The 5 Star in the North West implies the abuse of power; the complaisance of the patriarchy. And the shiny red 9 just makes it worse. Humour is required; a patriarch in this location or entering by such a door needs to take himself less seriously; if he doesn’t others may do it for him. That actually would be the role of a woman seated NW this month; if that’s you, go for it, you will make a worthwhile difference. The 9 is androgynous so gender issues are likely to arise.
Mitigate: Water: external Water butt – just for now. Avoid Wood

The Ox works best alone
The Tiger can run amok
The gambolling Rabbit gets further than the burrower,
The Dragon trusts,
The Snake seeks representation,
The Horse may receive unearned approval,
The Sheep’s consistent service may be appreciated,
The smart Monkey takes an early holiday,
The Rooster could learn team play,
The Dog risks break-up,
while
The Pig enjoys a better month in a trying year.

6 month                         yang Metal, Father, Heaven & Authority.
The Sheep month           is a time of joining and belonging.
Most helpful location:   North East – especially for the yin.
Least helpful location:  South East, West disappointing too.
Favoured Animals:         Pig, Rabbit, Sheep, Horse.
Especially challenged:   Rat, Ox, Snake, Rooster.
The Hexagram (above):  Tun Heaven on  Mountain. Retreat.Qi descends.

For action this Month:
Daily He Tu Journeys, now may be the time to tap into the more controllable energy following the peak of the year. The He Tu Journeys may be the way. All you do essentially is walk from one location in the building to another, carrying a crystal tumblestone. If youre adept at breathing you can do it without the crystal; you’re simply moving qi from one location to another so that helpful pockets join and unhelpful ones largly dissolve
This year the journeys are along 5 paths:
Tai chi (centre) to South,
Tai chi to North East,
North to North West,
North West to West and
South to South East.
You’ll need 150 rose quartz tumblestones. And possibly further instructions – just ask.

Super Sidekick: the Metal Sheep Month, 2019.
The Sheep, In the Marvel Comic Universe, Captain America’s sidekick/mate/punchbag/plot device Bucky Barnes is still in an existential limbo. Don’t you just hate it when that happens? But it can; especially if your year or day are ruled by the Sheep. June is an overpowered and often overpowering time. In a Sheep month like this (ie July) however, it is often the Sheep who gains power. That power derives from appropriate belonging. But you have to get it right; it’s so easy to fill in the wrong application form. You Sheep are essentially idealists, some might call you sentimental; be sure your affiliations serve your values at such a time when role models, gurus and the charismatic call out to you.

Message to Sheep: choose company carefully. Comfort is less important than integrity. A good example of a very poor choice born of the need to belong, may be Fire Sheep Nick Clegg’s new job as Facebook’s prevaricator for hire. Charisma, schmarisma.

Indeed there may be no quality more overrated. For all of us the Summer Fire months (Snake, Horse, Sheep) bring a degree of illumination. For some that is attention, for some insight. Some of us embrace this Fire and some of us ward it off, just as some of us are born to perform and some are born to run. One word for the charisma of Fire is toe far, sometimes translated as “the irresistible.” You’ll find toe far in your own ba zi where Hour, Day, Month, Year or Life House is ruled by Horse, Rat, Rabbit or Rooster. You may need assistance of course.

Everyone of us has these qualities in our ba zis – the trick is to pull them out and make use of them when they may be hidden. They’re always there however hard to find.

I sometimes compare feng shui to poker: the trick is to win on the good hands and not lose your shirt on the weak ones. That is to say make use of the best times and places and mitigate the worst.

In feng shui theory, charisma is some combination of toe far and kun (or discipline). Kun is the gale force that sinks a leaky ship but can blow the racing yacht in a zig zag onto the finishing line. Be sure to choose your time and place wisely.

Phases of the Moon during the Metal Sheep month:
New Moon(s):                 Tuesday            July  2nd                 19:16pm
Attention to blooms: cleanse and moon bathe crystals for attraction.
Metal Rat: Total Solar Eclipse. Not much help, so not much more to do.
Full Moon:                     Tuesday              July  16th            21:38pm.
Attention to roots; cleanse & moon-bathe crystals etc that dispel.
Wood Monkey: partial Lunar Eclipse; very helpful, long-lasting effects.
New Moon:                    Thursday             Aug   1st            04:12am
Cleanse and moon-bathe crystals for attraction.
Metal Horse: Promises more than it delivers. Water Sat; don’t place Water.

Where to be in July.
Summary: growth and gain.
North East, Wealth Star: Year Star: 2 Moon (Tiger), Month Star:9
The Earth of the 2 Star together with the Fire of 9 can make for growth of all sorts including the increase of assets. But at risk of minor ailments. This applies to locating facing or entering via the North East this month. Go on; you know you want to. Best for Pigs (1947/59/71/83/95) & Rats (1948/60/72/84/96). Relates to Youngest Son and facilitators; risk the bright lights.
Mitigate: red 6 – six Chinese coins bound together with red thread.
Assist: Fire; bright light.

Where not to be in July.
Summary: all sorts of unhelpful
South EastDetermination: Year Star: 7 sui po, Month Star:
Unsettled. Confrontational especially for Pigs and Dogs. Poor health, careless words, sharp tongues. Especially uncomfortable for Dragons. Robbery and money loss possible as well as the arguments that follow excessive introspection. Relates to Eldest Daughter and the ambitious woman; get your attention out. Stay out, avoid SE doors.
Mitigate: Water: a bowl of fresh Water changed daily.

The wise Ox defends only those who need defence,
The Tiger can please herself but probably shouldn’t,
The Rabbit feels the healthy pain of growth,

A 7 Month                     is both Fire & Metal and therefore quite volatile.
The Horse month         is a time of immediacy.
Most helpful location: North West – where foundations may be built.
Least helpful location: East.
Favoured Animals:       Tiger, Dog, Sheep.
Especially challenged: Rat, Ox, Dragon, Monkey
The Hexagram (above): Kou Heaven over Wind. Encountering. Qi turns.

For action this Month:
Daily He Tu Journeys, now may be the
time to gain deeper agency over change.
The He Tu journeys are often the way.
Black stone in a glass jar of Water at
SE, tai chi & NW is a traditional way to
boost business. Change Water daily.
All four Pillars of your ba zi – Hour, Day &
Month as well as Year – Animals respond to
changing month qi in their different ways.
Solstice (just after midnight on the
morning of the 22nd) crowns a frantic
period as the Fire Qi peaks, burns out
and turns to yin Earth. Breathe; pace
yourself. Calmer yin Fire follows.

Here comes the cavalry: the Metal Horse Month, 2019.
The Horse, is by nature, spontaneous, even hasty. There is no fuss with the Horse, no standing on ceremony. This month’s Horse however is tempered with Metal. This is Joan of Arc, the righter of wrongs. Events at this stage, the height of the year qi, define it; righting wrongs is the banner headline. Just as Snakes Basher al-Assad & Xi Jinping met with unexpected opposition last month, so – for different reasons – expect Horses like David Cameron to get in their own way now. And indeed Dogs like Donald Trump.
Message to Horses: don’t. Also Dogs & Tigers who don’t use the empowerment of yang Fire responsibly. For “responsibly” read intelligently.

During this Metal Horse Month
Horse: clumsy. The Horse suffers the so-called self-punishment, meaning Horses don’t much like Horses. Including Horse months. You may feel, encroached, blocked and delayed. Patience; avoid the unforced error.
Sheep: serves, this time a leader or organisation who may appreciate you and definitely will make good use of your talents. Horse is the best friend who’s just out of your league.
Monkey: Horse is a bit much for Monkey. Disclosure may be inevitable, probably won’t be comfortable. Keep your ego under control.
Rooster: head down. Baffling for you, Horse is competitive in a way that makes no sense. Withdraw from competition. The Fire/Metal opposition can make for cashflow.
Dog: full steam ahead. Horse Fire brings the recognition and vision you need. But play within your limits, no self-indulgence.
Pig: still not comfortable in your own skin. But easier. Relaxing into the flow gets you there quicker. Trust that your reputation is growing.
Rat: Month Breaker, diametrically opposed. What you say may be hard to articulate but it’s pretty valuable. Technically you’re clashed. But persist!
Ox: Technically a Harm. Stay alert and aloof or you’ll be involved in second-hand squabbles. Only defend those who need defence.
Tiger: Horse & Tiger (with Dog) make Fire. Pole position. You can pretty much do what you like. Not that.
Rabbit: draining. In a good way. Your yin Wood is creative but the Horse’s yang Fire takes it out of you. Be bigger than exhaustion.
Dragon: a law unto yourself. Summer Fire pushes you. Attitudes may harden and attention may stultify but all the big doors are open
Snake: Year Breaker – all year. Draw upon your innate respect for truth. What is true? You do know. Look within. Tack to the prevailing wind.

Note: this is simplistic. No astrological analysis can do you full justice and always having choice, you are as a wise man once said to me, the camera not the crisis. Nothing I nor anyone else can advise frees you from the need to make decisions.

The best way to wring value from these brief prognostications, remains to identify Month, Day & Hour as well as your Year Animal. Your ba zi is a unique cocktail of these and it’s as unlikely that all four are compromised at any given time as it is that they are all blessed. If in doubt seek an expert.

Where to be in June.
Summary: safe and celebratory.
North West, Authority: Year Star: 9 tai sui Month Star: 8.
There is a fundamental difference between locating in a particular place and orienting towards a particular direction. This year to be oriented NW is not so great but to locate there is extremely helpful. Because of the 8 Star, this month the North West location is the place to prosper and celebrate. There’s a slight risk of infection for older men and those with excessive Metal in their ba zis: such as Snakes, Roosters, Monkeys, Oxen.
Encourage: Fire, bright light 24/7. Additional moon-charged crystals.

Where not to be in June.
Summary: avoid, especially if you’re planning a revolution..
East, Ambition: Year Star: 6 Month Star: 5.
Hardship for the Eldest Son, also Fathers and figures of authority. Time out. Build up the Wood here for protection and encouragement – plants, plants, plants. Think long term. If rebellion’s your thing, take a break.
Mitigate: t’ang lung. But mostly plenty of plants, flowers, vegetation..

Selecting Auspicious and Personalised Dates

May 27, 2019
A One-day Zoom live Workshop with Richard Ashworth
Saturday 15th (UK) & Sunday 16th June (World).
Basic familiarity with Heavenly Stems & Earthly Branches required.

When the Beijing Olympics opened at 8.02*am on the 8th of August 2008, an astonishing 4.7 billion people were watching. That’s around 70% of the world’s population. 4.7 billion is a big number. And the 8th August a very carefully chosen date. Anyone who believes that today’s hard nosed commercial China has abandoned traditional methods of divination, need only look a little beneath the surface of that date. Someone knew what they were doing.

For at least 3000 years Chinese diviners have been consulting the Stems and Branches that make up the Chinese Zodiac Animals in order to select the most auspicious dates for big decisions like when to engage battle or raise an Emperor but also for weddings, negotiations, interviews, examinations, celebrations and razor’s edge choices. And they don’t seem to have done too badly.

The 8’s in the above date reflect of course the fact that in Chinese tradition the number 8  is reckoned especially fortunate. What is also so is that the Pillars of the day are perfectly aligned. Equally the sequence of daily Officers and Mansions of the Moon, are auspicious beyond coincidence. And there’s much more. This is a skilfully chosen date.

In each of these two live online workshops we will examine the use of the above and other sequences to gain an edge. But there’s more again.

Whoever advised the PRC knew the ancient Xuan Kong Da Gua method of matching dates to places and people. It may be that whoever had millions of kids queuing around the block for the new Harry Potter book in the summer of 2007 did too. Perhaps also consider the timing of the 2016 European Referendum at the Summer Solstice, a moment as any astrologer will tell you, when many are at their least rational. And this week’s Euro elections, held at the very moment the seasonal qi reverses.

These last may seem fanciful but the power of the method is clearly not and on the 15th and 16th June we will look at a variety of ways for tailoring dates, times for placing Water and for building, getting married, making big decisions and many other purposes. Join us.

We’ve almost filled these sessions by invitation from among my own students but if you have a working knowledge of Stems and Branches and would like to know more about letting good timing work for you, do apply (to sheilaashworthfengshui@gmail.com) for one of the three places left, I’ll walk you gently through the rest.

I hope to meet you then,

Best wishes,
Richard A.
* The odd two minutes were to acknowledge the sponsors O2, of course.

Via Zoom only (really simple to use, just ask)
It will last approx. 6 hours with approx a 1 hour break.

Saturday 15th June will start at 10am (BST).
Sunday 16th June will start at 2pm (14:00 BST).
The workshop will cost £150 (Early Bird £125 by 1st June 2019)

The Secrets of Heaven.

May 17, 2019

“The Secrets of Heaven are not to be shared.” Jiang Da Hong.

Some time towards the end of the T’ang Dynasty, around eleven hundred years ago, Grand Master Yang Yum Song is said to have stolen the “Azure Bag” of feng shui secrets from the Imperial Court. Such procedures and formulae were carefully guarded. Power always wants to hang onto power.

Some say the Emperor swore vengeance. Some say that if the Emperor had indeed wanted revenge, the Grand Master would have died rapidly and horribly; Chinese Emperors were pretty expert at that kind of thing. As it was he lived into his 70’s, long enough to pass on those secrets to the disadvantaged. Some of his methods are still in use today. As we shall learn.

I’m in Devon. It’s supposed to be a routine survey; move the head of your bed, place a Water feature, that kind of thing. Sandy needs a little luck. She’s bringing up her two boys on her own now. One goes to school in one direction, the other in another and her new love lives further away in a third. Money is tight and the house is a spartan Housing Association semi.

Sandy is a very bright woman. She’s recently re-trained as a maths teacher but is unsure that maths is her vocation. She’s concerned to get her elder boy into a special school some miles down the Tamar River in Plymouth. He’s at the bottom of a long waiting list. The odds are against him.

I look out from her front garden over the heights which command the valley. I was not prepared for the beauty of this place: steepled Norman Church up a grass promontory in one direction, postcard West Country village streets in another. Two rivers join on the nearer side of the valley and part just within sight. They cross the landscape like a blue-green snake, forked tongues at either end. On this bright windy day, the tumbling hills are green all the way to the horizon.

Feng shui is Wind and Water. According to the Classic of Odes the qi (pronounced chi) – that is to say life – comes down from the Mountain on the Wind and is held at the Water. In other words abundance – which is a bigger issue than simple wealth of course – can be found where there is live or sentimental Water; something that is pretty easy to find in a basin where rivers join. Why has it not made its way into Sandy’s house? It’s a stumper.

The answer will be outside of course. We build houses expressly to keep Wind and Water out. It stands to reason then that truly powerful feng shui involves not so much moving sofas or pictures as harnessing exterior forces – the rain, the wind, the sunlight. As I recall from O Level Physics, height and bulk are called “potential energy”; it takes a lot to climb a Mountain, not so hard to get back down.

Once clear of the Court, Grand Master Yang set about devising solutions to just these kinds of problem. The palaces and baronial piles of his time were routinely built to make best use of their surrounds, the homes of the common people not so much.

The underlying principle was and remains that Water, Mountain (that is height) and house have to align. Gravity being what it is, the Mountain dictates where the Water gathers. Simples.

The points where Water collects and leaves are often called Qi Mouths; Qi Mouths have to match doors. Which is why I guess Grand Master Yang came up with the procedure known poetically as the Double Mountain Upwards strategy for the Relief of the Poor.

Mediaeval feng shui Masters were maintained by wealthy patrons, much as were painters and sculptors like Michelangelo and Leonardo in Renaissance Europe. Every noble family employed its own feng shui Master. GM Yang’s happened to be the most powerful of all, the Xi Zong Emperor. And relief of the poor was the last thing Xi Zong had in mind. What he did want was his secrets back. So, it is said, he instituted a manhunt.

All the rental properties on Sandy’s crescent are the same: two front doors, no back door; that is to say two entrances, no exit. And equally basic. Despite the commanding position, there is little wealth in evidence here.

Sandy’s just been paid so she offers to buy me lunch. We walk to the village pub. It’s ancient and gabled with beams all over, dark and slightly musty. I half-hear whispers in the empty bar as we walk in.

Sandy’s subsisting hand-to-mouth on Universal Credit, she tells me. Like several thousand others she has found Universal Credit baffling and unfair. She can rely on nothing, as likely to be presented each month with a bill on which to feed her boys as with payment. With a running UC debt in four figures, she has had to scrimp to get me here. I have mouths to feed myself but I’m not cheap and I’m not sure how I feel about that.

To explain what I’m going to do I give her some background. I explain that the mediaeval Master’s task was to ensure that the mansion suited the landscape. It’s unlikely that the Devon housing association took this into account.

And then I realise just how revolutionary GM Yang’s strategy was. He was repairing mediaeval houses built without attention to feng shui – that is to say occupied by the poor.

“These days when doors are wrong the feng shui Master moves or reangles them,” I tell her.

There’s no budget for that however and in any case it’s not Sandy’s house. What is called for then is her own Qi mouth to mirror the rivers. Sounds simple. Isn’t.

When I get back to my stuff at home, I calculate. It’s a day’s work. For which I do not charge her. Then I email Sandy with instructions. On a carefully chosen day she is to surround the house with a ring of clear quartz crystals, leaving gaps at specific points. Grand Master Yang would have disapproved strongly of the crystals, I imagine, but he’d recognise the pattern. After all he designed it.

Less than a month later I receive two WhatsApps: one tells me that her elder boy has a place at the school of her choice. The second is about Universal Credit in the form of the Department of Work & Pensions who have eliminated her debt.

Power, as I said, wants to hang onto power. Indeed one T’ang Emperor, Xuan Zong is said to have commissioned a book of fake information, known as Exterminate the Barbarians, to make it hard for enlightened Masters like Yang Gong to pass feng shui on to the common people. Even today feng shui is mostly the perk of the privileged.

There are those who say that Exterminate the Barbarians is the basis of certain procedures still in use. It’s certainly the basis of taunts between different schools of thought even today. It probably never existed by the way. But why let that get in the way of a good insult?

Sandy thanks me. I thank Yang Gong. As I say, he lived to a decent old age. He did die of poisoning though.

Earth Snake

An 8 Month brings positive purpose.
The Snake month is an uncertain time.
Most helpful location: tai chi – the 8 at the centre of things.
Least helpful location: South West.
Favoured Animals: Snake, Ox & Monkey.
Especially challenged: Pig, Tiger, Sheep.
Hexagram (above): Qian the Father, Heaven over Heaven. Full Yang.

Sticky Wicket: the Earth Snake Month, 2019.
The Snake, sometimes called Little Dragon, rules the times that follow the Dragon: the hours between 9 and 11am, the month of May and the years 1953, 65, 77, 89 and 2001. Actually Snake follows Dragon in many senses; she is the Apprentice to the Dragon’s Sorceror, naturally a student, a disciple and a long-term learner. Typically gifted with tremendous retention and mental abilities, Snake is often called the seeker after truth and may often push the envelope of honesty before finding their role as truth’s guardian. Interesting then that this month’s Snake coincides with the 8 lo shu which demands trust.

The Snake opposes the Pig of course, so the whole year is challenging, but under your own sign, Snakes may find enlightenment. That goes for the rest of us in a less pronounced way. The door to ignorance is often marked “Wisdom” and vice-versa. Those who don’t know this already may appreciate its truth by month’s end. Notable Snakes Tony Blair, Bernie Sanders, Xi Jinping and Bashar al-Assad can look forward to that.

During this Snake Month
Snake: see above. Truth is your pillar of fire. Re-kindle. Especially neglected. relationships. Just because it feels like duty doesn’t mean it’s the wrong thing to do.
Horse: is impatient with the Snake. But then the Horse is impatient in most situations. Hold steering wheel steadily as you depress accelerator. Keep satnav handy too.
Sheep: serves, possibly the wrong Master. Keep your eyes open & be ready to cut losses.
Monkey: Snake can encourage venom. Which is not always either fortunate or comfortable as it makes for win-lose situations. Watch your tongue and you’ll make more friends. Not all jokes require butts. Dismiss nobody.
Rooster: in charge one more month. Mind your back & the route down the mountain.
Dog: some relief but it’s still mostly hard work. Dogs can push forever on closed doors when there are other openings all over the place.
Pig: Pig doesn’t favour Pig. And neither does Snake. The gains you make this month depend upon remembering that your word is your bond.
Rat: insists on free speech. Which may be an indulgence this month. Omerta.
Ox: gets a boost. Your grip retightens on your purpose. What’s that? Your true purpose is what’s left after you discard what sounds good, what you ought to do and what your Mum would approve of. And you didn’t need me to tell you that, did you?
Tiger: Tiger’s yang Wood is drawn upon by the Snake. But not much. A meh kind of month if not used for preparation. Empowered all year, the Horse finds you airborne.
Rabbit: flops a little with the Snake. As the Dragon’s neighbours, Snake and Rabbit are two sides of a coin. Consider your assumptions critically this month.
Dragon: finds followers and students in the Snake month. If that’s what you seek, keep your eye on the ball and be prepared to ask the right questions of the right people.

Note: this is all very simplistic. No astrological analysis can do you full justice and always having choice, you are as a wise man once said to me, the camera not the crisis. Nothing I nor anyone else can advise frees you from the need to make decisions

The best way to wring value from these brief prognostications, remains to identify Month, Day & Hour Animal as well as that for your Year. Your ba zi (sometimes misleadingly called a Chinese Horoscope) is a unique cocktail of these, the prevailing Elements at your birth and it’s as unlikely that all four are compromised at any given time as it is that they are all blessed. If in doubt seek an expert.

Where to be in May.
Summary: a month of progress, creativity and restored order.
Tai chi, Home: Year Star: 8 Month Star: 8.
The centre holds. Be in the geometric centre as far as possible to gain creativity and progress from the benevolent 8 Star. You can rev it up a little with Fire but best use is to be there, doing stuff and throwing out energy. Can you do that for a month? Of course you can.
Encourage: Fire, bright light 24/7. Additional moon-charged crystals.

Where not to be in May.
Summary: avoid.
AnchorSouth West, Relationship: Year Star 5 Fortune Virtue (Rat) Month Star: wu huang.
Except for the 6th and 18th May, steer clear if you want smooth sailing. South West rules relationship (especially with your Mother) and all close relationships area a bit fragile for those who locate this way for now. Same applies to entering via SW door or a building that faces SW.
Mitigate: t’ang lung. Don’t know what that is? Ask.

Earth Dragon

AnchorThe Dragon month brings transformation.
Most helpful location: tai chi – the centre of things.
Least helpful location: North.
Favoured Animals: Monkey, Rat, Rooster,
Especially challenged: Dog, Rabbit, Dragon, Tiger, Horse.
Hexagram : Guai Transformation, Lake over Heaven. Sudden change.

The Dam breaks: the Earth Dragon Month, 2019.
The Dragon is said to live in the Earth as a fish lives in Water; its veins, the luan tou carry the qi down from the Mountain to the Water. Qi is invisible to most of us but its effect is not; where the luan tou gives out onto flat land the grass is often greener, the people healthier, the colours brighter, the wind cleaner. Whether we’re in Switzerland, Monte Carlo, Hampstead or Colorado, the heights bestow power and the Water lower down dispenses it. As the classic has it, “the qi comes down from the Mountain on the Wind and is held at the Water”.

Put very simply, if you want wealth and power, seek for your dwelling the ridges just short of the peak. Avoid the peak however; as the Classic goes on to warn: “therefore preserve the Water and protect against the Wind”. Rule number one in choosing a house is to avoid the windswept. Little is stable when lashed by the Wind.

So far, so mechanical; if feng shui theory is not scientific as many Masters would claim, it is at least pseudo-scientific. The above is a big chunk of what I do. It’s the kind of linear advice you’d expect from a Feng Shui Master; powerful and effective and often complex but if your ambition reaches beyond the linear and transformation is your objective, await the Dragon. The Dragon is magnificently irrational. And here it comes.

Transformation – that is when things that have always been one way suddenly have always been another way – calls for great honesty. This honesty falls into two categories: honesty as to what is so and honesty as to what is required. The first is a lunar, yin, kinaesthetic process involving feeling whatever is within us to feel; the second is a solar, yang, introspective and visual process calling for clear objectives. You’ll find the first buried in many spiritual practices and the second at the heart of a hundred thousand self-help books. You’ll seldom find both together, other than, dare I add, in the work I do.

Marianne Williamson author of A Return to Love (as quoted by Nelson Mandela) differentiates between transformational (or miraculous) and magical thinking. For her magical thinking insists that our guardian angels or whatever will save us a parking space, hold a train or win us the lottery. For myself I imagine it’s a quiet day in Heaven when angels care about such trivia but what do I know? Transformation on the other hand breaks all the rules.

The signs are good; the term Dragon is used a thousand ways in Chinese tradition: she commands the left-hand side of a dwelling (looking out) and by extension the left brain of rational thought. The Dragon is mercurial and explosive; unsurprisingly the Chinese character zhen for Dragon, forms half of the ideogram for a thunderstorm, the bringer of sudden change. The hours between 7 & 9am are ruled by the Dragon just as are the years 1940, 1952, 64, 76, 88, 2000 and 2012. And of course the month of April.

So April’s Earth Dragon brings sheer power and as I said the signs are good: the related Hexagram from the Book of Changes is No. 43: Transformation or Breakthrough, the lo shu or magic square is a 9 which stands for illumination and inspiration. And the Earth Dragon relates to 1988, the year when East-West barriers started to come down. In the following twelve months the Berlin Wall fell and even China hovered between reform and repression. Transformation starts here.
Richard Ashworth ©2019

Where to be in April.
Summary: a month of advantage; the centre holds.
Tai chi, Home: Year Star: 8 Month Star: 9.
Month Star 9 stands for illumination and emphasis and it’s occupying the middle of your space right now. When it’s with a helpful Star like the 8, that Star becomes extra helpful. Put very simply, the Heart of the House is extremely fortunate right now, pretty much however you want use it. As GrandMaster Raymond Lo puts it: “conventional wealth & harmony in relationship.” Fill your boots.
Encourage: Fire, bright light 24/7

Where not to be in April.
Summary: sickness Star North.
AnchorNorth, Distant Future: Year Star 4 Sun (Rat) Month Star: 5.
Tricky. Any time the 5 arrives, look out! Possible sickness here, especially for younger Mothers. The North – on the magic square  as on the map – is naturally colder, wetter & darker but at this point also represents a neglected woman. The qualities of the true mature male are needed, bringing stability, advice and security. But you might have to make do with a windchime.
Mitigate: Metal 6 Pipe Metal windchime.

Fire Tiger

A 2 month is about increase and gain.
A Tiger month serves vision and leadership.
Most helpful location: East. Least helpful location: South West.
Favoured Animals: Tiger, Horse, Dog, Pig.
Challenged: Monkey, Rat, Snake, Dragon
The Hexagram (above): Tai Increase, Earth over Heaven, Gains.

Who’s in charge?: the Fire Tiger Month, 2019.
An interesting thing about the Pig is that its Elemental make-up is identical to the Dragon. Which makes this in many ways the Dragon’s year. The Dragon’s yin/yang balnce is different however, so  they/he/she will have to time things right. Watch the World’s leading Dragons Nancy Pelosi (Metal) & Marianne Williamson (Water) for pointers. In 2020 they take over. Both women – who’d have thought it?

The Dalai Lama was right: the World will be saved by Western women. Observe the above but watch out for the real playmakers, the Rabbits, Dragons, Snakes, Horse and Sheep of 1987-1999. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez for instance, And Rutger Bergman.

February – the most helpful month for Pigs btw – is when these and indeed most Dragons face pivotal decisions – globally, domestically, romantically, commercially and other. Which could so easily go wrong. If we can own that we get the leaders we deserve (that is on some level we chose them, whatever we tell ourselves) we may have reached peak-Trump (& peak-Brexit). If not, maybe not. There’ll be another fork in the road in early August when the yang Metal of the Monkey Month sparks the last of the Fire season. And at that time, at least for vested interests, the runes do not look helpful. And the coming financial collapse will be obvious by then. Not btw that that is altogether bad news.If it’s not obvious that would be bad news indeed.

Meanwhile in this Fire Tiger month in this Earth Pig year, here’s what you have to look forward to:

Ox: on the back burner and relieved to be there. Quiet time till July. Not the time to gamble. Use your extreme sensitivity er….sensitively.

Tiger: Famously powerful, notoriously variable, Tigers tend to get their own way this month. For better or worse; use that power wisely, Tigers often not so great at active listening.

Rabbit: profitable to both gamble and gambol. It’s a 2nd-in command kind of month.

Dragon: Timing! There is, to coin a phrase, a time for every purpose under Heaven.

Snake: Neither Pig nor Tiger on your side. Simple truth your best guide.

Horse: one of your most supportive times. Run wild, run free,  but perhaps not rampant.

Sheep: loyal cohort of the Pig. Doors start to open for you now. Push.

Monkey: butt of Tiger, adversary of Pig; best keep your head down & mind your own business. Poorly phrased/ timed jokes may backfire. Zip it!

Rooster: confusing; bountiful prey but little agreement from your peers. Manners!

Dog: The most loyal, the most stubborn; the most immovable, the most restless. You choose. Pig is a whole year when you’d do well to be alert. Know who your friends are.

Pig: self-clash. You need space, also compassion. Know the difference between enthusiasm and the gang mentality.

Rat: yang Water in a yin Water year, now confronted with pure yang Wood; under-powered. Best to work within those limitations.

Final note: the above are very simplistic assessments. No astrological analysis, especially such a brisk one will ever do you full justice. You always have choice, you are as a wise man once said to me, the camera not the crisis. Nothing I or anyone else can advise will free you from the necessity to make decisions.

The best way to wring value from these brief prognostications, remains to identify not only your Year Animal but those of Month, Day & Hour. You are  – astrologically speaking – a cocktail of these and it’s as unlikely that all four will be compromised at any given time as it is that they will all be blessed.

Where to be in February.
Summary: turbulent, productive.
East, Determination: Year Star: 6 Month Star: 9.
The ego has landed.  and 6 are a volatile combination. Turbulent but pretty fertile. As the 6 beds in, expect action in the East – of the map, the house and your greater environment – to feature clashes of titans. It’s macho again but contention now is between adult male peers rather than generations. Again this could well be quite productive but it’s not likely to be comfortable or easy to watch. Take special care of feet, head, Eldest Son and Fathers.

Mitigate/Exploit: Earth: rose quartz – large or handful of tumblestones.

Where not to be in February.
Summary: Poor all year.
South West, Accumulation: Year Star:5, Month Star: 8.
The Annual 5 or wu huang makes this the location to avoid all year. A Master (or Mistress) Bedroom here will be asking for troubled affairs of the heart; an office for administrative or HR issues. Briefly: don’t enter locate or face South West if there is an alternative. If your front door is South West, aim to enter another way.
And finally to get the best of it, around six times this year activate the Monkey as part of the Four Point Activation – get the timing right. Otherwise evacuate and keep this area quiet.
Mitigate: t’ang lung.

Girls’ Talk

February 4, 2019

Girls’ Talk.

Sarah was the middle sister of three. Last year her younger sister died. Following this she took a demanding job, commuted to a town she didn’t know and worked herself to exhaustion. I’ve been setting up her home for the fresh energy of this new year of the Earth Pig.

Before I catch my train home – a rare direct connection to Guildford from the double-glazed rat trap that is Birmingham New Street (where there security barriers keeping you back from the security barriers)  – we sit for a couple of minutes in her car. This last 12 months has been break-neck for her. Now she figures she needs to be still and feel the pain she has been running from.

“Girls Talk” by Dave Edmunds selects itself on her car radio.

It was the Queen who said that grief is the price we pay for love. Probably written for her, to be fair, but profound just the same. And it’s only respectful. I tell Sarah about my own sister who died, pregnant and beautiful aged 32, from whatever follows pre-eclampsia. Eclampsia, I guess.

“I don’t think I felt this depth of grief,” I say. “The grief you’re simultaneously feeling and not-feeling.”

She nods.

“You’re the boss, this is your life,” I say, “But it may be about time to open up to it. We have two choices essentially with feelings: distraction or immersion. And since distraction always leads to immersion, it seems to make sense to go there first. Gin & tonic, heroin, nicotine and soap operas, they all just delay the moment.”

“I know,” she says. “I’ve been so busy. That was what I intended, anything rather than entering the grief. When I get home I don’t want to do anything. Sleep and work, that’s it.”

Her career’s going great.

“The human condition seems to consist of lessons tied up in feelings,” I say, “We call them negative emotions because we generally choose not to like them.”

She takes a deep breath; her eyes glisten and she purses her lips.

She feels her sister nearby, she tells me. I look within; it’s like a wisp of dizziness, a wave of vertigo and then gone. There’s such grief in her eyes now.

The most unusual detail of her house is an odd niche in an outside wall to the South East – the place of the Wind, the ultimate yin, “gentle and thorough but ultimately adamant”, as the Book of Changes has it. South East – the place of sisters. When I visit Sarah I’ve always been drawn there.

I’m not so literal – or as brutal – as to see a causal connection here. Feng shui’s not like that – things do not I think, occur because you get the feng shui wrong. Think of what unhelpful silliness that can lead to. I think the metaphors built into a house simply tell a story that we can sometimes decode and work with: a skid into which we may drive. There’s a small fountain here now, embellished with a sad little angel. It’s all a bit too damp and the pump has stopped. But then it’s January.

Bringing Sarah’s home up to date for the New Chinese Year, now pretty much with us, includes identifying the helpful 8 and 9 “Stars” and “activating” them. Bright light is an effective booster, but in some cases inappropriate because of the energy that’s already there. These are reckoned by many to be the abundance Stars btw. Of which I inform you with due caution.

Every part of our houses equates to a certain member of the family, a location within (and without) the building, particular types of activity, a Trigram from the Book of Changes and a thousand thousand other things. The numbers of the “Stars” are tags for a million metaphors.

Next priority is the 5 or Wu Huang “Five Yellow” Star which is reckoned to bring plagues of boils; generally this isn’t literal. The 5 is ambivalent, both Earth and Fire, and although it belongs in the centre of the house, it flies about. This year it’s in the South West. And it’s doubly tricky because the 5 alone of the integers 1 to 9 lacks a corresponding Trigram. It’s not, unlike say the North West which belongs to the Father and Authority, a member of the family. Feng shui enthusiasts who’ve only been taught Western dilutions of classical theory learn that the 5 Star is Bad with a capital Buh. The nonagenarian guys in Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan whose names you’ll never hear, know that the 5 is the power; harnessing it is the Holy Grail.

We agree to tame it with Metal and a t’ang lung charm.

Then I show her this year’s He Tu Journeys. He what Journeys? you might reasonably ask. These journeys make for opportunities to take charge of our space. Each year, each segment of the home houses different Stars (as you may already have worked out) and the ancient He Tu Map defines the connections between them. The 3 Star for instance whose home is in the East but this year has migrated to the South, has affinity with the 8 Star which lives North East but sits at the centre or tai chi this year.

I’m not making this stuff up, honest.

There are four or five daily He Tu Journeys each year. Journey number one for this Earth Pig Year is from the South to the tai chi, bringing light to the heart of things.

I encourage Sarah to take these walks every morning but nothing is lost if a few are missed. Find the beginning location, breathe deeply into it and take that breath to the end location. More powerful if you say, take a tumblestone across the divide, but most powerful when the walker finds their own meaning within it. In that place that we all know to one extent or another, where visualisation meets alpha rhythms, such a recognition moves mountains. We might call it prayer. Prayer consisting of a desperate last minute request may or may not land, prayer that simply identifies and accepts the appropriate cannot miss its mark.

And then we set up a walk from the South to that sad little assembly in the South East, from the Middle Daughter to the Youngest.

She wants to talk awhile before we leave. She says she knows she has locked something away.

“It’ll happen when it’s supposed to happen,” she says.

Ah. Going with the flow. Careful with that. Living is a dynamic process and there’s no limit to the ability of human beings to turn liberating ideas into chains. “Going with the flow” can be one such chain. Sometimes the flow – that is the tao – leads through difficulty, sometimes through opposition. The appropriate path is not always simply a door that’s been left open.

“For myself,” I tell her, “That kind of pain – a broken heart however caused – hangs like a weight until it’s owned. Feeling and not feeling while the mind is constantly engaged trying to solve and explain and reassure. Hurts.  And it’s not much help. The reassurance does not reassure.”

“Sometimes the flow, the Tao, what-have-you demands ingenuity, sometimes a lowering of barriers. Nothing I can do for you will save you from the need to make decisions.”

“I know,” she says.

“Time for a cry,” I say.

“I know that too.”

When I get on the train, the first track that comes on is “I don’t feel amazing” by the Guillemots: “Can’t stop those noises at the door.” She knows that and there’s nothing wrong with her door..

“Just be sure to make those journeys.”
