Support for the Snake may remain double-edged,
The Horse can see the breaks,
The Sheep holds back,
while

Look & Listen: the Water Rooster Month, 2019.
A superior personality will have a view of the real sentiments of the great mass of humanity and thus cannot be deceived.” The Book of Changes Hexagram 20.

Message to Rooster: when the superficial seems enough, dig deeper.

A Rooster Month in a Pig Year is likely to bring some sort of relief following the antics of the Monkey Month. Wilful foolishness was the keynote then but this month is likely to bring both doubling down and apology. Awareness of error is a good place to start rebuilding and the Rooster brings some consciousness as to what sort of figure we have been cutting.

Such a revelation can be mortifying and offer a choice between repeating ourselves shamelessly or waking up. These kinds of trends have been clear in public life but possibly more subtle at home or at work. Opportunities to heal may present themselves in a similar way. This may prove easiest for Dragons and hard for Rabbits – perhaps you have been pampered or blinkered. The rest of us are somewhere in between.

Follow the suggestions about where you locate particularly carefully this month (pp5&6) and pay special attention to the days when you have a special edge (p4); if any of the Animals of the Four pillars of your ba zi are here you have an opening. Use it – these dates take hours of calculation and I’m not making this stuff up.

Interestingly one aspect of this and the 4 at the heart of September’s magic square may see female candidates for US President falter; it’ll be the end of the road for several. But not all. Western woman, as the Dalai Lama suggested, will save the world yet.

Note: this is all very simplistic. No astrological analysis can do you full justice and always having choice, you are as a wise man once said to me, the camera not the crisis. Nothing I nor anyone else can advise frees you from the need to make decisions.

The best way to wring value from these brief prognostications, remains to identify Month, Day & Hour Animal as well as that for your Year. Your ba zi is a unique cocktail of these and it’s as unlikely that all four are compromised at any given time as it is that they are all blessed. If in doubt seek an expert.

Where to be in September.
Summary: growth and gain.
South, Bright Future: Year Star: 3 Dragon Virtue Month Star: 8.
3 & 8 make Wood enabling a late resurgence of Summer Fire. So if you locate here or face South, expect attention. Such attention may have to be earned but be ready for it; consider perhaps how you’ve ducked it before. Even if you think that’s the last thing you’ve been doing; attachment gets in the way for most of us. East Group kuas 4, 3, 1, 9 such as 1988 Earth Dragons & 1952 Water Dragons (I’ve written about these elsewhere) get breaks against the odds but anyone can earn approval here.
Encourage: Wood (ie plants) also open space.

Where not to be in September.
Summary: all sorts of unhelpful
North West, Authority: Year Star: 9 tai sui Month Star: 5.
The 5 Star in the North West implies the abuse of power; the complaisance of the patriarchy. And the shiny red 9 just makes it worse. Humour is required; a patriarch in this location or entering by such a door needs to take himself less seriously; if he doesn’t others may do it for him. That actually would be the role of a woman seated NW this month; if that’s you, go for it, you will make a worthwhile difference. The 9 is androgynous so gender issues are likely to arise.
Mitigate: Water: external Water butt – just for now. Avoid Wood

Encountering
Hexagram 44

Animal by Animal
During this Metal Horse Month,
The Rat may be articulate but unheard,
The wise Ox defends only those who need defence,
The Tiger can please herself but probably shouldn’t,
The Rabbit feels the healthy pain of growth,
The Dragon is unruly,
The Snake is best tacking to the prevailing wind,
The Horse may make unforced errors,
The Sheep is appreciated,
The prouder Monkey is uncomfortable,
The Rooster may be baffled,
The Dog avoids self-indulgence,
while
The Pig can trust in a growing reputation.

Metal Horse

A 7 Month                     is both Fire & Metal and therefore quite volatile.
The Horse month         is a time of immediacy.
Most helpful location: North West – where foundations may be built.
Least helpful location: East.
Favoured Animals:       Tiger, Dog, Sheep.
Especially challenged: Rat, Ox, Dragon, Monkey
The Hexagram (above): Kou Heaven over Wind. Encountering. Qi turns.

For action this Month:
Daily He Tu Journeys, now may be the
time to gain deeper agency over change.
The He Tu journeys are often the way.
Black stone in a glass jar of Water at
SE, tai chi & NW is a traditional way to
boost business. Change Water daily.
All four Pillars of your ba zi – Hour, Day &
Month as well as Year – Animals respond to
changing month qi in their different ways.
Solstice (just after midnight on the
morning of the 22nd) crowns a frantic
period as the Fire Qi peaks, burns out
and turns to yin Earth. Breathe; pace
yourself. Calmer yin Fire follows.

Here comes the cavalry: the Metal Horse Month, 2019.
The Horse, is by nature, spontaneous, even hasty. There is no fuss with the Horse, no standing on ceremony. This month’s Horse however is tempered with Metal. This is Joan of Arc, the righter of wrongs. Events at this stage, the height of the year qi, define it; righting wrongs is the banner headline. Just as Snakes Basher al-Assad & Xi Jinping met with unexpected opposition last month, so – for different reasons – expect Horses like David Cameron to get in their own way now. And indeed Dogs like Donald Trump.
Message to Horses: don’t. Also Dogs & Tigers who don’t use the empowerment of yang Fire responsibly. For “responsibly” read intelligently.

During this Metal Horse Month
Horse: clumsy. The Horse suffers the so-called self-punishment, meaning Horses don’t much like Horses. Including Horse months. You may feel, encroached, blocked and delayed. Patience; avoid the unforced error.
Sheep: serves, this time a leader or organisation who may appreciate you and definitely will make good use of your talents. Horse is the best friend who’s just out of your league.
Monkey: Horse is a bit much for Monkey. Disclosure may be inevitable, probably won’t be comfortable. Keep your ego under control.
Rooster: head down. Baffling for you, Horse is competitive in a way that makes no sense. Withdraw from competition. The Fire/Metal opposition can make for cashflow.
Dog: full steam ahead. Horse Fire brings the recognition and vision you need. But play within your limits, no self-indulgence.
Pig: still not comfortable in your own skin. But easier. Relaxing into the flow gets you there quicker. Trust that your reputation is growing.
Rat: Month Breaker, diametrically opposed. What you say may be hard to articulate but it’s pretty valuable. Technically you’re clashed. But persist!
Ox: Technically a Harm. Stay alert and aloof or you’ll be involved in second-hand squabbles. Only defend those who need defence.
Tiger: Horse & Tiger (with Dog) make Fire. Pole position. You can pretty much do what you like. Not that.
Rabbit: draining. In a good way. Your yin Wood is creative but the Horse’s yang Fire takes it out of you. Be bigger than exhaustion.
Dragon: a law unto yourself. Summer Fire pushes you. Attitudes may harden and attention may stultify but all the big doors are open
Snake: Year Breaker – all year. Draw upon your innate respect for truth. What is true? You do know. Look within. Tack to the prevailing wind.

Note: this is simplistic. No astrological analysis can do you full justice and always having choice, you are as a wise man once said to me, the camera not the crisis. Nothing I nor anyone else can advise frees you from the need to make decisions.

The best way to wring value from these brief prognostications, remains to identify Month, Day & Hour as well as your Year Animal. Your ba zi is a unique cocktail of these and it’s as unlikely that all four are compromised at any given time as it is that they are all blessed. If in doubt seek an expert.

Where to be in June.
Summary: safe and celebratory.
North West, Authority: Year Star: 9 tai sui Month Star: 8.
There is a fundamental difference between locating in a particular place and orienting towards a particular direction. This year to be oriented NW is not so great but to locate there is extremely helpful. Because of the 8 Star, this month the North West location is the place to prosper and celebrate. There’s a slight risk of infection for older men and those with excessive Metal in their ba zis: such as Snakes, Roosters, Monkeys, Oxen.
Encourage: Fire, bright light 24/7. Additional moon-charged crystals.

Where not to be in June.
Summary: avoid, especially if you’re planning a revolution..
East, Ambition: Year Star: 6 Month Star: 5.
Hardship for the Eldest Son, also Fathers and figures of authority. Time out. Build up the Wood here for protection and encouragement – plants, plants, plants. Think long term. If rebellion’s your thing, take a break.
Mitigate: t’ang lung. But mostly plenty of plants, flowers, vegetation..

Fire Tiger

A 2 month is about increase and gain.
A Tiger month serves vision and leadership.
Most helpful location: East. Least helpful location: South West.
Favoured Animals: Tiger, Horse, Dog, Pig.
Challenged: Monkey, Rat, Snake, Dragon
The Hexagram (above): Tai Increase, Earth over Heaven, Gains.

Who’s in charge?: the Fire Tiger Month, 2019.
An interesting thing about the Pig is that its Elemental make-up is identical to the Dragon. Which makes this in many ways the Dragon’s year. The Dragon’s yin/yang balnce is different however, so  they/he/she will have to time things right. Watch the World’s leading Dragons Nancy Pelosi (Metal) & Marianne Williamson (Water) for pointers. In 2020 they take over. Both women – who’d have thought it?

The Dalai Lama was right: the World will be saved by Western women. Observe the above but watch out for the real playmakers, the Rabbits, Dragons, Snakes, Horse and Sheep of 1987-1999. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez for instance, And Rutger Bergman.

February – the most helpful month for Pigs btw – is when these and indeed most Dragons face pivotal decisions – globally, domestically, romantically, commercially and other. Which could so easily go wrong. If we can own that we get the leaders we deserve (that is on some level we chose them, whatever we tell ourselves) we may have reached peak-Trump (& peak-Brexit). If not, maybe not. There’ll be another fork in the road in early August when the yang Metal of the Monkey Month sparks the last of the Fire season. And at that time, at least for vested interests, the runes do not look helpful. And the coming financial collapse will be obvious by then. Not btw that that is altogether bad news.If it’s not obvious that would be bad news indeed.

Meanwhile in this Fire Tiger month in this Earth Pig year, here’s what you have to look forward to:

Ox: on the back burner and relieved to be there. Quiet time till July. Not the time to gamble. Use your extreme sensitivity er….sensitively.

Tiger: Famously powerful, notoriously variable, Tigers tend to get their own way this month. For better or worse; use that power wisely, Tigers often not so great at active listening.

Rabbit: profitable to both gamble and gambol. It’s a 2nd-in command kind of month.

Dragon: Timing! There is, to coin a phrase, a time for every purpose under Heaven.

Snake: Neither Pig nor Tiger on your side. Simple truth your best guide.

Horse: one of your most supportive times. Run wild, run free,  but perhaps not rampant.

Sheep: loyal cohort of the Pig. Doors start to open for you now. Push.

Monkey: butt of Tiger, adversary of Pig; best keep your head down & mind your own business. Poorly phrased/ timed jokes may backfire. Zip it!

Rooster: confusing; bountiful prey but little agreement from your peers. Manners!

Dog: The most loyal, the most stubborn; the most immovable, the most restless. You choose. Pig is a whole year when you’d do well to be alert. Know who your friends are.

Pig: self-clash. You need space, also compassion. Know the difference between enthusiasm and the gang mentality.

Rat: yang Water in a yin Water year, now confronted with pure yang Wood; under-powered. Best to work within those limitations.

Final note: the above are very simplistic assessments. No astrological analysis, especially such a brisk one will ever do you full justice. You always have choice, you are as a wise man once said to me, the camera not the crisis. Nothing I or anyone else can advise will free you from the necessity to make decisions.

The best way to wring value from these brief prognostications, remains to identify not only your Year Animal but those of Month, Day & Hour. You are  – astrologically speaking – a cocktail of these and it’s as unlikely that all four will be compromised at any given time as it is that they will all be blessed.

Where to be in February.
Summary: turbulent, productive.
East, Determination: Year Star: 6 Month Star: 9.
The ego has landed.  and 6 are a volatile combination. Turbulent but pretty fertile. As the 6 beds in, expect action in the East – of the map, the house and your greater environment – to feature clashes of titans. It’s macho again but contention now is between adult male peers rather than generations. Again this could well be quite productive but it’s not likely to be comfortable or easy to watch. Take special care of feet, head, Eldest Son and Fathers.

Mitigate/Exploit: Earth: rose quartz – large or handful of tumblestones.

Where not to be in February.
Summary: Poor all year.
South West, Accumulation: Year Star:5, Month Star: 8.
The Annual 5 or wu huang makes this the location to avoid all year. A Master (or Mistress) Bedroom here will be asking for troubled affairs of the heart; an office for administrative or HR issues. Briefly: don’t enter locate or face South West if there is an alternative. If your front door is South West, aim to enter another way.
And finally to get the best of it, around six times this year activate the Monkey as part of the Four Point Activation – get the timing right. Otherwise evacuate and keep this area quiet.
Mitigate: t’ang lung.

Water Dog Month

I was at a local planning meeting this week, mostly a torches and pitchforks affair concerning a proposed massive development. This is SW Surrey and the room was full of money. Nothing brings out the middle-class like a threat to house values. And to be fair, many in the room brought more than nimbyism to the party. But what was being summoned and what will dominate October was the dead hand of entitlement.

Dogs (1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, October & mid-evening births) are stubborn, as Mrs Trump can tell you, no matter how wrong they are.

Three of the last four US Presidents have been Dogs – all but Obama (obviously), grizzled 1946 Fire Dogs.  And they won’t let go. Some would call this white male privilege but equally obviously not all Dogs are any of those things. But they cling on. That’s the central theme of this month, like this year: power that won’t let go. It’s wrapped up with #metoo and the bonkersness of #Brexit of course and the obscenities of human-caused human misery in the Yemen and Myanmar but essentially this month features power that is being challenged and won’t listen.

The Dog is solid and doesn’t easily soften. That’s the pattern of the Kavanaugh hearings; privilege that doesn’t know how out of date or fragile it is. And this month, remember is a Dog month in a Dog year. Peak Dog.

Watch for these dynamics at work – is your management past its sell-by date? – at home – how Edwardian, bless them, are your male relatives? You might perhaps remind them that the last Edward to sit on the throne abdicated in 1936. In our most intimate relationships to what extent are we taking up age-old roles that are out of shelf life?

Technically the Dog is yang Earth by the way and yang Earth characteristics are obviously useful in context. Many 1958 Earth Dogs are powerful businesswomen perhaps because of the very fact that in a male-dominated world they refuse to give up. Fire Dog David Bowie’s longevity as an icon was the envy of his peers, as was that of 1958 Earth Dog Prince. Computer tycoon Bill Gates has Dogs deep in his ba zi also.

Two more things you need to know about this month: one is that the magic square or lo shu has at its centre a Star. The – you guessed it – is the number of the Father, God and Authority, a trinity of symbols lodged pretty close together in most of our psyches. All of which suggests reinforcement of the main theme. Chinese Masters might add that the central Star of the lo shu equally represents capital cities and head offices and indeed the North West. Ken Loach’s new film Peterloo – concerning a popular uprising about social conditions in Manchester, capital of the industrial North West, early in the 19th century – looks extraordinarily timely. Trouble at ’mill this month maybe, that is to ay civil disobedience.

The other thing you may need reminding of is that the Dog fosters proxy conflicts. Current examples include the one between the Saudis and Iran all across the Middle East and the many worldwide between Russia and the USA of which Syria is the most obvious.

Again this dynamic may show up closer to home. Best to be aware of our true motives in any dispute, especially when we are defending a friend or offspring. This will apply most to Sheep (1943, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, July and mid-afternoon births)) and Oxen (1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, January and births between 1 & 3am).

This is peak Dog. Peak peak Dog, if you like, will tend to come with Ox and Sheep days the 12th, the 18th, and most particularly the 24th of this month. These promise the most stubborn blockages and immovability of all sorts. Try to remember there’s no point pushing locked doors.

But you can seek a Dragon. Dragons are the solution. For which read intuitive and non-linear behaviour as well as Dragon Days (15th and 27th) when solutions may be suddenly obvious and actual Dragons (1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 7-9am, April) in person. These days (and these people) will tend to offer solutions. Otherwise the classical solution would probably be to locate important negotiation South East. Best to know you don’t know and remain very open; as they say, approach the Buddha with an empty rice bowl or as the Tao Te Ching has it: “Solidity is an advantage but it is emptiness that makes a space useful.”

And finally: no astrological analysis will ever do any of us full justice. We always have choice and ultimately nothing can be done to any of us, however unrealistic that may seem. We’re all aware that blame (whether of Dogs, Sheep, Oxen, Dragons or of pundits like me who may cross a line) disempowers us. But we may not understand why.

It may be that blame simply deprives us of power. The delusion that someone else has agency over our problems clearly means that we don’t. And this word agency is the key. There are no coincidences, country and western songs or irony in real life. There is simply choice.

You don’t have to agree of course and there are alternative views running from God’s Will to chaos theory, but it seems to me that I am responsible for my life – not Dogs, Sheep, Oxen or Dragons, though they are helpful guideposts on the way. And for that reason and others I’m running a Transformational Workshop this month (Godalming, the weekend of the 20th/21st  October).

The workshop is as you would expect rooted in Chinese Astrology because that’s what I know, but the map is not, as they say, the territory and the subtext is Reclaiming our Agency. There are just a couple of places left; if you’d like to join us, email Sheila at sheilaashworthfengshui@gmail.com for details.

There’ll be some radical ideas, some very ancient ones, many from the millennia-long legacy of Chinese thought but some equally old from closer to home. Some will be challenging and some simply comforting but mostly it’ll be an opportunity to peel back the layers of busyness, hurry and worry and return to daily life refreshed, relaxed and relieved. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry; you may even hurl.

To summarise, the conflicts of this disputatious month are not solved by logic or reason but they can be solved. And if noting all these dates is too much like hard work, by the way, all you need do is follow my Tweets (@FengShuiDiaries) Have fun.

Where to be in October.
Summary: manifestation.
West, InterventionYear Star: 2 Month Star: 8.
For cash flow the usual advice is to follow the 8s and 9s with bright light. Be sure that the location is not otherwise compromised but during October the West is the place for girl talk, a glass or two of a decent wine and a wind-down, setting up success in whatever project is focused upon. All such activity will tend to encourage the 8 Star to deliver, as will Fire in the form of bright light.
To boost: Fire, that is bright light.

Where not to be in October.
Summary: hazardous.
North, Future: Year Star:monthly & annual san sha, wu huang Month Star:2
The visiting 2 and san sha make this area hazardous for women in particular ie the obverse of last month. If you work, sleep or linger here your health and productivity may suffer; your acupuncturist will confirm that kidney – the engine-room of energy creation – and ears may be the most vulnerable. Stay out!
Mitigate: t’ang lung only.

Breakthrough
Hexagram 43Animal by Animal
During this Fire Dragon Month,
The Rat declares,
The Ox lies low,
The Tiger may feel defensive,
The Rabbit has free reign,
The Dragon may find ego in the mirror,
The Snake looks for examples to follow,
The Horse may jump the gun,
The Sheep recovers and contributes,
The Monkey improvises,
The Rooster calls the shots,
The Dog may feel affronted,
and
The Pig wander.

Remember: Each Pillar of your ba zi represents an aspect of your life:

Year Animal:       physicality, forebears, heritage, the obvious & immediate;
Month Animal:    the work environment, education, peers, siblings, exes;
Day Animal:         you and your beloved;
Hour Animal:       intimate thoughts, children, dreams, the future.

3 month centres on aspiration, possibly not without drama.
A Dragon month promises rapid change.
Most helpful location: South East.
Least helpful location: North.
Favoured Animals: Monkey, Rat, Rooster.
Especially challenged one way or another: Dog, Rabbit, Tiger, Horse.
The Hexagram (above): Kuai Breakthrough; Lake over Heaven.

Busting out all over: the Fire Dragon Month April 2018
One way of tracking the year is by way of the Hexagrams from the Yi Jing or Book of Changes. Technically each quarter is ruled by a Hexagram. Covering the first three months is Number 15, Qian which counsels Humility. From March 21st (the Vernal Equinox) to June 22nd (the Summer Solstice) is overseen by Zhen, Number 51 (sometimes known as the Shocking). Socially, internationally, at home or in the office, in our deepest and in our most shallow relationships, this is the tone of the next three months. There is as much positive as negative in this btw.
Zhen is also the name for April (from late on the 5th) the month of the Dragon. So this theme is concentrated right now and the Dragon herself whose weakness is often ego may find her reputation challenged  This is known as a “self clash”, if you’re smart you’ll turn it to your advantage.
Meanwhile the Dragon’s associates Monkey and Rat prosper in their different ways: Monkeys are likely to be even more outspoken than usual while the Rat’s opinion is much sought after and she’s glad to oblige.
The Dragon’s “secret friend” the Rooster may be tempted to strut a little based on recent triumphs; caution. On the other hand the Dog – unusually for this their own year – may be on the back paw although their favourite the Rabbit’s special relationship with the magical Dragon means Rabbits can be sure of a loan (not necessarily simply financial) if needed.
For the typical Snake this is a time of learning, for the Horse one when he may well be alternately hurried and held up. The Sheep tends to follow the Horse around but this month could be busy seeking various sorts of membership. The Pig is likely to put in a lot of miles. The Ox will be relieved to know they are out of trouble for now.
All those boosted by the fresh Wood Power of the Dragon might helpfully remember that acting outrageously can lead to outrage. Knowing this the smarter Tiger holds back for the time being.
And finally it’s also little known that every Dog year holds an explosion within it about a third of the way through. Put simply, there is a burst of Fire coming. Yes that’s also due now. But then things always happen rapidly in a Dragon month.

Where to be in April.
Summary: the place of creativity and windfalls.
South East, Determination: Year Star: Dragon Virtue Month Star: 2
The South East sector as well as SE doors and buildings facing SE are pretty good now.  Bright light may encourage windfalls and creativity with only a slight risk of blockages physical and otherwise. Could be frisky too and this is the place for new ideas and daring for at least the next five months. brings further acquisition, gain and positive growth of all sorts. Fill your boots.
Enhancement: Bright light.

Where not to be in April.
Summary: accident-prone.
South, Bright Future: Year Star san sha wu huang Month Star: 7
Oops, neighbour trouble. The often fouls things up. In the South this could mean very public mistakes and possible robbery or accident with all but the youngest females in the cross-hairs. Curious and inventive women otherwise nurtured here this year, are probably best elsewhere for now. The South is still welcoming to kuas 1 and 9, plus Dog, Tiger and Sheep. As ever much the same applies to a South-facing house btw. This month don’t be here, face this way, or enter the house by this door if you have alternatives.
Solution: Anchora bowl of Water changed daily plus Wood – four plants.

The Monkey Month
Animal by Animal
During this Earth Monkey Month,
The Rat kicks off,
The Ox is between stools,
The Tiger plans ahead. But not far,
The Rabbit cares for the home,
The Dragon awakens,
The Snake stirs,
The Horse doesn’t,
The Sheep looks back,
The Wise Monkey is ready,
The Rooster’s patience is stretched,
The Dog hangs back,
and
The Pig rests. His case.

A 2 month concerns relationship, accumulation joining and minor illness.
Most helpful locations: East, South-East.
Favoured AnimalsMonkey, Rat, Dragon, Snake.
Especially challenged one way or anotherTiger and Pig.

Where to do what, when and why this month.
Summary: Where’s it’s all happening.
South East, Determination: Year Star: 9 Dragon Virtue, Month Star: 1.
This is where communication happens during the Monkey month. There is a rare clarity here. Dragon Virtue supports the good reputation of kuas 1 3 4 and 9 as well as certain Monkeys, Rats, Snakes, Roosters and Oxen. All year this is the place to be noticed in a positive way; both achievement and recognition continue to fall to those of us in South East facing houses and/or located SE. And romance is more favoured than ever. Convene, discuss, plot but above all communicate here this month. The 1/perfect 10 combination suggests extended time here will break through long standing career and recognition barriers.
Month Solution: plants, bright light.
Annual Enhancement: Four Plants (eg bamboo stems) and/or a Water fountain.

One to avoid; where not to be this month.
Summary: Where to go to avoid own goals.
North East, Wealth Star: Year Star: 4 gip sat, Month Star: 5.
5 is the power that resists being harnessed; usually best not to try. Keep the NE quiet till September. West Group kuas (8,6,7,2) are less affected and some Rats and Pigs but Monkeys and Sheep should steer clear and this is no place for a Tiger at the moment. Only delay is likely to follow lurking here, facing this way or repeated use of North Eastern doors. Keep the plants here but turn off the lights. No wild parties.
Month Enhancement: Six Pipe Metal Windchime, music box.
Annual Enhancement: Fire, (eg bright light). Four Plants (eg bamboos in Water).
Annual Solution: t’ang lung.

East and West Groups: Everybody falls into East or West Group by way of their birth date. The calculation is simple. To know where you belong, email me.

Readers Digest version: East Group people best face East, South, South-East and North and/or in buildings and beds backing onto these directions. West Group vice-versa. Sorry it’s fiddly, I’m not making this stuff up.

Know your inner beast. How Monkey are you?
Birth in the Monkey Hour (3-5pm)~: clever, playful children.
Birth on the Monkey Day#: bitter humour.
Birth during the Monkey Month (August)*: stand-up or techie.
Birth in the Monkey Year: brought up with some pedantry

A Dark Mirror: the London skyline.
“In order to find our place in the infinity of being, we must be able both to separate and unite.”
The Book of Changes.
On Thursday 28th August 2013, sunlight reflected from the so-called Walkie-Talkie on Fenchurch Street melted the trim of a Jaguar parked opposite on Eastcheap. The Sun’s rays did something similar to tiles and a doormat the following October and more recently bicycles, carpets and doors. I don’t know whether Uraguayan architect Rafael Vinoly subscribed to the notion that form follows function but if so the London Fire Brigade seem to be the principal beneficiaries.
Fenchurch Street is in the heart of the City of London, for the time being the banking centre of Europe if not the world; there are more American banks in London than any other city. The financial district pretty much occupies the streets of Roman Londinium, running East-West parallel to the River Thames. Because the Sun travels East to West, this is a nice fair orientation that distributes sunshine equally.
Although the Romans were actually developing an existing Celtic settlement (dedicated as it happens to Lug the God of Light) the City is the oldest part of London. Bishopsgate marks its historical Eastern extreme and Moorgate the Western. You can even today – equipped with a key you can request from the Museum of London – descend under the pavement a few yards from the Bank of England and inspect remnants of the original wall, still marked with ash from the sacking of the City by Budicca in 61 AD. And from Roman times onwards, the East-West Streets – London Wall, Cheapside, Cornhill – shared the Sun’s blessing. Unlike the district around Wall Street which any New Yorker can tell you, is in almost perpetual shade.
And today banks of all nationalities stretch from Southwark across the Thames to the South and Westward beyond Aldwych; you’ll find Goldman Sachs’ unmarked ivory tower on Fleet Street just beyond Ludgate Circus, well out of the traditional neighbourhood. Much of this expansion has taken place since the “Big Bang” of 1986.
The Big Bang effectively de-regulated banking; from then institutions like Northern Rock could borrow money and lend it at a loss while junk bonds and their derivatives consisting of defaulted mortgages and other toxic loans could be sold-and re-sold until the financial markets were awash with assets valued in trillions but worth less than nothing. As an investment analyst friend of mine put it then: “How do I compete with a fresh generation with the minds of Chess Grand Masters and the instincts of lampreys?” Seemed like a good idea at the time.
What also happened around then was that a succession of huge buildings started to go up to the South and South East of the City. These included the Walkie-Talkie, as well as Heron Tower and the Gherkin (aka the Swiss Re building), tributes to the egos respectively of convicted fraudster Gerald Ronson and the architect Norman Foster. Because of their location, these vast buildings began to block the light to the City. And as of today planning permission has been granted for more than a further dozen. That’s perhaps twenty more megatowers ready to be planted between the City and the Sun.
My friend Master Howard Choy would say that feng shui depends upon qing or “affection”. For architecture to work, somebody must give a damn. He condemned cutting edge super-hub Kings Cross/St Pancras for example as lacking just such attention. Common sense really. As many of you know however, for myself I’m fond of answering the request “Explain feng shui” by saying that if you plant tomatoes on a North-facing wall, you’d best not expect great salads. Light is an essential to life. It’s obvious, isn’t it that as long as we are flesh and blood we are at the effect of shade, heat and damp? And in a sense all the complexity of Classical feng shui is simply what three or four thousand years of observation have piled on top of that fact. By extension light, that is Fire, means openness, visibility, spontaneous talking and straight dealing. Shadow is its opposite.
Anyway if politics is show biz for the ugly, then maybe banking is showbiz for the anonymous. What is for sure is that if power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely then proximity to wealth breeds dishonesty, and close proximity to infinite wealth, infinite dishonesty. And just as so much of the unchecked infamy of the City and of Wall Street could not proceed without lax regulation, so greed grows in the dark. I doubt that’s what Lug had in mind.

Coming to Meet
Hexagram 44

The Horse Month
  Animal by Animal
During this Fire Horse Month,
The Rat is likely to be pushed back,
The Ox is at 6s and 7s,
Tigers leap,
The Rabbit steps carefully between the cracks,
The Dragon freewheels on momentum,
The well-prepared Snake climbs high,
The Horse disdains her own company,
The Sheep is valued,
The smart Monkey treads carefully,
The Rooster bakes,
The Dog may have a complaint to lodge,
and
The Pig changes tack.

Animal Fortunes for the Rooster year remain on the website all year:
2017: Year of the Turkey. Now may be the time.

Where to do what, when and why
Summary: Here’s where wealth and success are hiding this month.
North, Distant Future: Year Star: 6, Month Star: 9
The 9 arriving North brings future prospects even closer. This is the place to focus previously vague plans prior to putting them into action in July.
Due to the monthly san sha, keep it gentle; no loud parties, cement mixing.
Bold and clear plans made here and now offer special support to East Group kuas (1, 3, 4 & 9) Monkey, Dragon, Ox and Rat, especially in imaginative and creative pursuits. No serious downside if you keep it subtle; action in July brings results.
Monthly Enhancement: bright light.
Annual Solution: A large (6kg+) rose quartz, a little Metal, occasional Water

One to avoid; where not to be this month
Summary: Here’s how not to suffer a plague of frogs this summer.
North West, Authority: Year Star: 2, Month Star: 5.
You know the 5 Star, of course; it ruled last month. Nasty. This month it impedes authority, teaching and the role of the patriarch in the NW. A house facing NW or with a busy door oriented that way will tend to suffer most. Bad news for Fathers, leaders and those in legitimate authority who risk illness, especially of lung and chest if they reside here or face this way.
Keep this area as still quiet and unoccupied as possible.
Monthly Solution: Metal; eg 6-pipe Metal windchime. Peace and quiet best.
Annual Solution: Red 6 (six Chinese coins tied up with red thread) and wu lou (gourd) are reckoned effective against the 2.

East and West Groups: Everybody falls into either the East or the West Group by virtue of their birth date. The calculation is simple but if you do want to know where you belong, email me at richardashworth@imperialfengshui.info.
Readers Digest version: East Group people best face East, South, South-East and North and/or in buildings and beds backing onto these directions. West Group vice-versa. Sorry it’s fiddly, I’m not making this stuff up.

Know your inner beast. How Horse are you?
Birth in the Horse Hour (11am-1pm)~: extrovert children.
Birth on the Horse Day#: shoot first, ask questions later.
Birth during the Horse Month (June)*: physical work for preference.
Birth in the Horse Year: inherited impetuosity.
~ GMT. # You’ll need a Chinese calendar for this. * Caution: Chinese months start later
Tuition and Intuition.

“The superior man is concerned that goodness should be an established attribute of character rather than an accidental and isolated occurrence.”
The Book of Changes, Hexagram 29, The Abyss.

A 4 month; about innovation and curiosity.
Most helpful location: North.
Favoured Animals: Sheep, Dog, Tiger.
Especially challenged one way or another: Rat and Ox.

You may think of yourself as the Animal of your year of birth, but you’ll recall that you are also ruled by the Animal of your Month, Day and Hour, all with differing implications. If you were born on an Ox day for instance you may now be entering a month of hard personal decisions.

On the other hand someone whose birth month is ruled by the Dog (October) may find work and education proceeding swimmingly. For all of us Hexagram 44 implies either an important new acquaintance or rediscovery of an old and equally important one.

And it’s a Fire Horse – the most fiery of the Zodiac Animals and often the totem of the impetuous. This is a month when there may for all, but particularly for Ox and Rat be a rash of er…rash behaviour. As we approach a General Election and with international politics so delicate, this makes for a quite restive period. Behaviour and outcomes may be hard to read. As Nate Silver implies in The Signal and the Noise, the key to forecasting is getting our preferences out of the way. Silver would probably not agree but often this leads to intuition; informed intuition but intuition all the same.

So you’ll understand how it is that when I am deciphering a ba zi or “reading” a house, I will tend to trust the intuition that comes from nowhere precisely because it is not my opinion. Sometimes that intuition will be expressed in my body, it’ll literally be a feeling.

I remember once surveying a house and noticing pain in my teeth. I was not overdue for dental attention and had not been at the Haribos, so I knew the sensation did not belong to me and so I asked my client: “Does anyone here have problems with their teeth?” “No,” she said and I carried on but I could not help noticing that the apartment was on the ground floor, close to the road in a shopping district.

Perhaps an hour later, I was sitting down with her for a debrief and I asked what the place had been used for in the past, given its commercial location.

“A dentist’s,” she said.

So returning to the point, this may for all of us be a month of impulsive behaviour and one in which the balance of head and gut is tested. Trust what you know, I suggest but be very aware that there are different varieties of knowledge. Remember this at the ballot box maybe. Apart from the lizards, David Icke is beginning to look quite prophetic.

Where to do what, when and why
Summary: Two locations again

South, Bright Future: Year Star: 6, annual san sha, Month Star: 8.
To encourage a bright future, it’s best for East Group people to locate or face South again. South–facing windows and doors are favoured as is the South of your home/office. “Bright future” btw means plan, plot, visualise and wait; whatever Barthes and Derrida may think, the future is a little down the line. No complaints that nothing happened in the first three minutes following the change, please.
Note: To sleep facing South means toes North, pillow South.

West, Intervention: Year Star: 4 Year, Sun, Month Star: 6.
For West Group people West (who’da thought it?) remains a top location. The single female could successfully seek company here. Positive intervention may bring windfalls too. Locating yourself West, facing West or occupying a West-facing building is pretty sound. Same with West-opening doors.
Note: To sleep facing West means toes East, pillow West.

East and West Groups: Everybody falls into either East or West Group by virtue of their birth date. The calculation is simple but if you want to know where you belong, email me at richardashworth@imperialfengshui.info.
Readers Digest version: East Group people are best facing East, South, South-East and North and/or in buildings and beds backing onto these directions. West Group vice-versa.

My actual Diary
Little Red Rooster.
I have a stopover in a dinky little hotel while I’m working on integrating a house and workshop into an ancient group of hills. I can’t tell you more about this right now, if ever.

But staying away from home gives me a chance to read extra-curricular stuff; in this case Barney Hoskyns’ Trampled Underfoot about the infamous exploits of Led Zeppelin. Coincidentally (in the sense that there is such a thing) today the  redtops are reporting that a US court has let Led Zeppelin get away with yet another “inspiration” – this time having cut and pasted Taurus by Spirit into the introduction to Stairway to Heaven. And as it turns out, I’m listening to Nessun Dorma played by Jeff Beck. Beck is the most lyrical of guitar players. Check out his version of Somewhere over the Rainbow if you doubt me. Such an emphatic touch. Beck was with Jimmy Page in the Yardbirds of course. So it’s fair to say that Page was, far from being the greatest guitar player in the world, not even the best in the Yardbirds.

As it happens, Willie Dixon’s Little Red Rooster is not on the rollcast of blues and folk artists plundered by Zeppelin: Howlin’ Wolf, Bert Jansch, Muddy Waters, it really is a long list .

Anyway a red rooster is clearly Fire, not say Wood or Metal. This Fire Rooster month prefigures 2017. So obviously enough similar forces affect both and consequently, similar events can be expected. Both month and year are Fire Roosters: a boisterous bird that tends to be glamorous and charismatic. The Rooster is also logical to a fault. A balanced one is a valuable friend while you have her attention; out of control this is a bombastic show-off, mouth disengaged from mind and heart. Current potential and actual world leaders fit this bill pretty well, as did Led Zeppelin. The Rooster is inherently Metal and Fire attacks Metal. Own goals and friendly fire are likely this month. Along with plagiarism.

The “Star” at the centre of the lo shu or magic square is a 4 which relates both to innovation and copying. The 4 is puckish but generally benevolent. It sits to the South East which means that some Western interpretations of feng shui limit its influence to “Wealth” which is over-simplistic. Wealthy or not, the Rooster is yin, (ie principally to do with the feminine) and it’s sometimes termed the por kwan. The por kwan or  “broken soldier” often possesses the “poison tongue”; words that can kill at fifty paces.

But it’s not a time to hold your tongue. It’s actually a very good month to say in a new way things that need saying, as long as you’re truly well-intentioned. Anything can be communicated in a way that’s healing. Let me emphasise that this is not an appeal on behalf of pc central but a warning to consider the impact, accuracy and intention of words. In NLP theory “the meaning of a communication” is reckoned to be “the reaction it elicits.” It’s black and white, we don’t get to say “I didn’t mean that,” when we bruise with a careless phrase. On one hand then, this is the month of the apology, on the other it’s foot-in-the-mouth-Month. Watch the front pages.

A dozen semi-literate black songwriters died in penury when a small cheque from Page might have pulled them out of the gutter and at this moment in time when there is more inequality than ever and more denial of the fact, we are at a er… crossroads, so to speak. The Monkey year has as predicted been chaotic. But nothing is written in stone. One man’s chaos is another’s opportunity.  Next year’s Rooster, like this month’s could go either way.

And there is really nothing, no magic, no mumbo-jumbo, no recherché formula, more powerful than telling someone something nice that’s true.
See Hexagram 27 perhaps.

Special (almost) free bonus:
Some years ago a guy rang me and asked if I’d like to record a cd about classical feng shui. I agreed and he arrived with his headphones and plugs, I ran very simply through the meaning of the Zodiac animals and where in my daughter Jessica’s words “to put stuff to get stuff.” It was clear, authentic and simple, he caught me on a very good day. Then he scarpered and I heard no more. Last month a new student told me she’d found me through a wonderful “podcast” which turned out to be this recording. I was never paid but you can get it from Audible for around £4. Now I know how Howlin’ Wolf felt.

More Monkey Business

August 9, 2016
More Monkey Business:  Two Fire Monkeys.

This is for Thea.

Fire  Monkey month in Fire Monkey year. Set the controls for disturbance. On the 18th and the 30th there’ll be three. OMG.

In Chinese myth, the Monkey is an unapologetic beast. He can bound several li to escape the consequences of his actions and in one tale he even leaps to the Moon to delete the record of his wrongdoing from the Akashic record. Bit of a Trump. Or a Johnson. Or an Assad. Or a Pepsico. Or a Goldman Sachs. Continued, as they say on page 94. The key note of the unbalanced Monkey is a shame bypass.

And OMG here comes a double Fire Monkey. The last Fire Monkey month was in 2011, the time of the London Riots, when the frustration more recently expressed in Brexit and elsewhere first boiled over. I’m not suggesting panic in Poundland or mayhem in Morrisons but we are now probably at the peak of the turbulence of the mischievous Monkey. Feng shui aims to give us a measure of control but in a world where last week I could so easily have been in Russell Square, how can any of us expect to control anything?

Technically the magic square or lo shu of this Monkey month has the 5 Star at its centre. The 5 lo shu is reckoned to describe the moment at the beginning of time when nothingness became stuff: two kinds of stuff actually – yin and yang – followed by the “myriad” or “10,000 things”, that is to say everything that we can touch feel or measure. This suggests a month featuring some kind of return to the beginning. It’s a 2 year however, and these two stars combined are generally considered pretty baleful. And for the anoraks out there, the 28 Lunar Mansions are almost in sync with the quarters of the Moon – very very unusual. Run for the hills.

Well no. Feng shui theory considers there to be three realms if you like: the Heavenly, the Earthly and the Human. Heaven was there before the 5 lo shu (in the sense that “before” means anything here); Heaven sets the rules. The Earth operates within those rules to which “models” like feng shui and indeed physics are responses. The rules could have been different – gravity could have gone upwards, the sky could be pink – but they are not. Human beings are considered the interface. It is we who employ methods, systems, sciences if you will within the parameters set by Heaven. Human beings have choice; myths from Prometheus to Adam illustrate this. We have the gift of cocking up but also that of changing the rules.

How do we that? First we recognise Heaven, the limits of our power. There are certain things we can control so let’s control them: our mouths, our actions and reactions and our attitudes for instance. There are certain other things we can’t control; how others behave is one. The hate that is in the world and apparently outside ourselves; we can offer this back to Heaven simply by not subscribing . Jesus had a bit of take on this, if you recall.

Second we do what we can mechanically. This is Earth qi. We inform ourselves and act compassionately and consciously and perhaps take a few risks. We can stand against British companies supplying and training Saudi forces to bomb the supply lines that would otherwise feed Yemeni children – over 5,000 of whom have starved to death during the current forgotten war. We can support media that is genuinely informative – Channel Four News is the only tv news worth attention imho – and papers that need folding. Knowing the facts is not negative.

As for the Earth qi of feng shui, we respect the timing and locations outlined elsewhere in this bulletin. And do it with awareness that the North East means North Eastern Europe (think about it) as well perhaps as your bathroom. We can accept for instance that neither Vladimir Putin nor Boris Johnson as Dragons in a Monkey year are likely to come a cropper.

And thirdly we use the power of choice to choose a better world. This calls for deep honesty about our own laziness and disengagement. It calls for communication and possibly the courage to be outspoken. There is in this world I have landed upon much that I would prefer was not there. Along with you, I choose better. Every day, not just during the Monkey month.

Change may not happen overnight but if we start to make different choices, the world might even be a better place, come September.

Lao Tse.The Monkey Month
Animal by Animal
During this Fire Monkey Month,
The Rat gets the breaks,
The Ox follows – for once,
The Tiger crouches,
The Rabbit’s agenda may appear dictated,
The Dragon cruises,
The Snake has help controlling the damage,
The Horse should not wager,
The Sheep rests – in company,
The smart Monkey embraces chaos,
The Rooster beckons,
The Dog is consistent,
while
The Pig takes it easy.

Know your inner beast. How Monkey are you?
Birth in the Monkey Hour (1-3pm)~: ingenious and impious kids.
Birth on the Monkey Day#: resistance to early commitment.
Birth during the Monkey Month (August)*: sales ability.
Birth in the Monkey Year: mechanically minded.
~ An hour earlier than the clock during British Summertime ie 8-10.
# You’ll need a Chinese calendar. * Caution: Chinese months start later.

Where to do what, when and why
Summary: There is one stand-out location this month but you have to be gentle with it.
South, Bright Future: Year Star: 6 Month Star: 9.
The future wealth star 9 brings improved communication. As in every sector, this month’s star brings a cameo of the underlying energies. Which are double-edged because the South also holds both the monthly and annual san sha (otherwise melodramatically known as Three Killings). What does this mean? This: if you occupy the Southern area of your space or face South, prospects and especially vision should improve. If you hold loud parties there or in a South-facing house you may invite a plague of boils. So occupy but don’t over-activate, especially do not dig or drill. South door much the same effect.

Still no Wise Monkeys:
My diary for the month of the Fire Monkey.
I’m looking over Karen’s smart Victoria flat for the second time. On the last brief visit her ba zi (or personal feng shui that travels with us, sometimes misleadingly called a Chinese Horoscope) took us into her heartbreak over her Father’s premature death. Gentle soul work and the few li xi pai tricks I put in place clearly made enough difference for her to want me back.
It’s a nasty 21st century apartment block constructed without much apparent concern for people. So much of my work is compensating for thoughtless architecture. Is every bathroom in these premises without natural light?

Because her back hurts she has to stop and lie down every now and then. She has had several operations and dreads another. I explain that this may relate to the “spine” of the building which is undermined by a shopping precinct (pretty much at the sacro-iliac) that is in eternal shadow and beneath that an underground car park.  I suggest a virtual cure: a large rose quartz boulder as close as she can get it to the centre of the car park which will also approximate to the tai chi or heart of the building. Attention to the depths has effects that are profound but slow. The higher we go the more rapidly a difference will tend to show. Which is great given that she’s on the 8th floor. If you subscribe to this mumbo jumbo.

We look in every room. The main problem is that the office from which she runs a small business is not only in the North East but holds the “Flying Star” or fei sin 5 long term. This means that it will always need feng shui assistance in order to be usable but that this year anyone who has been in there much risks chronic sickness. I give her the three dates in August when it’s safe to occupy. There’s some inevitable organisation to do.
“But don’t linger,” I warn.

Karen’s sister is here to do heavy lifting. We look in the bedroom where Karen’s head is totally wrongly oriented in keeping with the ancient ba zhai theories. Positioning her correctly looks awkward, it’ll put her under a window. Which is not ideal but it’s better. There’s often a trade-off between the various strictures. Better however to risk insomnia than further injury. Her sister argues fiercely for the change, bless her. I stand back, the last thing I’m going to do is bully her in her fragile state.

Nonetheless I’ve banned Karen from her office, and she has nowhere to work, so I locate the most helpful spot. We correct a shelf that protrudes at spine level and orient her to her sheng qi or “wealth” position, making sure she has literal and metaphorical back support.

Everything is changing all the time. We’re warmer in summer than in winter and more cheerful when we’re warm. It seems to me straightforward that certain orientations will suit certain people in certain ways better than others. That’s not metaphysics, it’s common sense. Isn’t it?

Finally I ask both of them to sit comfortably and close their eyes. Karen’s ba zi tells me that there was a major shift in her life around age seven. This is the beginning of what’s called her “Big Fate” or “Luck Pillars”. Someone’s Big Fate occurs at a moment that is sometimes traumatic, always significant. We build a picture of a Mother with mental health issues and a Father who retreats into his work. Karen is effectively orphan and Mother at seven. Back-breaking. We notice that all four are cracking up and we put them back together again.

My work here is done.

Then I sit in a corner – South, the external realm of the Father – take out my ipad and try to write up my notes. The Pages app won’t do what it’s told. The cursor leaps about. The font keeps changing. It’s been a long day, I get annoyed with it and turn it off. I’ll write this up on my laptop tomorrow. A lifetime in the world of woo-woo™ and it doesn’t occur to me that there might be something else going on with my ipad. What a turkey!
