The Return
Hexagram 24

The Fire Rat Month, Animal by Animal
The Pig peaks early,
The Rat opens,
The Ox takes charge,
The Tiger could falter,
The Rabbit questions,
The Dragon rejoices,
The Snake hangs out,
The Horse pulls up,
The Sheep: pulls up alongside,
The Monkey shines
The Rooster may be unpredictable
and
The Dog settles in till February. Good idea.

Fire Rat

This month’s lo shu: wu huang 5 South ; san sha South

Winter is here: the Fire Rat Month, 2019.
Look to my coming at first light.”  Gandalf. The Two Towers. JRR Tolkien.

Rat Month favours communication. Around this time of year, while it’s dark and cold, we pause awhile. We gather and share our experience of the Year and rest up. Human beings are essentially programmed to overeat, huddle together and catch up now until the thaw of February.

When a Rat Month opens into a Rat Year however, the invitation is to a much longer conversation. This month plumbs the depths not only of this year’s Winter but the Winter of the Great Year or tai sui. The Great Year lasts twelve years and the Rat is in effect one month of that Great Year. We are now fast within a prolonged period of cold and damp. There’s time to think about where we have been and where we are going.

And we are fast into a time of world uncertainty which may be reflected in our homes, our workplaces and elsewhere. As ice caps melt, many of the foundations of our way of life are under threat. In China, Yemen, sub-Saharan Africa, Myanmar and Kashmir as well as in Westminster and Washington we are at the mercy of poor choices both of lifestyle and ruler. Time to re-consider perhaps. Now’s the time.

Water of course also represents the emotions, that other mute mode of communication. The deepest Water speaks not only of physical damp but of deep feeling. All Water is forever seeking all other Water just as the most profound feelings are always seeking expression. We share our feelings in order to connect, to make sense of them and in some cases to relieve them. That’s why we huddle together in mid-Winter.

The tai sui lasts twelve years; this deep cold has been a dozen years in coming, the spring remains more than a year away.

Whether we are talking globally, politically, at home or at work, at our desks or our dinner tables, now is an opportunity to consider where we go next. There are hints as to when and where to do what in this missive but your personal response is just that: personal. We get the leaders we deserve and the times we deserve. So when we are dissatisfied with them we are well advised to look within. Spring follows Winter just as Dawn follows night.
Richard Ashworth December 2019

Where to be in December.
Summary: result!
East, Ambition: Year Star: 6 Month Star: 8.
Stars 6 and 8 combine authority and wealth. Expertise and practice pay off. Work and practice here for property gains and notoriety. Additional Water constitutes a 1 thus making an abundant 168. Younger son may inherit. Settling here encourages the eccentric – no harm in that. If you have a door here, enter by it as often as you can.
Assist: Water: blue/black and/or a bowl changed daily.

Where not to be in December.
Summary: potentially embarrassing
South, Bright Future: Year Star: 3 Dragon Virtue Month Star: 5. Month san sha The vigorous 3 is briefly blighted by the 5 Star. Facing the 5 ie facing South may embolden but occupying the South carries the risk of embarrassing cash flow issues. The Fire here may shine unwelcome light. Not much help here till January. Possible digestive issues too – there’s a surprise!
AnchorMitigate: Metal: but don’t overdo it. Music box the most effective counter.

The Mute Cry for Help: the Wood Pig Month, 2019.

There are only two communications: love and the cry for help.”
Dr. Chuck Spezzano.

Pig Month, Pig Year, double Pig. We approach peak porker. Whatever your year has been like to date it’s about to be more so. If you’re a Rabbit, Sheep or Tiger that might sound pretty good; whether that’s the Animal that rules your Year, Month, Day or Hour, you have to a greater or lesser extent been in pole position all year. Fill your boots.

To the average Snake or Monkey however the prospect is of further frustration; to the Dog more gip sat; that is to say opposition and robbery. And to the Pig him or herself, who may have seen every two steps forward followed by one backwards in 2019, pretty daunting. Traditionally Pigs don’t rub along too well with other Pigs. That’s called the “Self Clash” and it’s uncomfortable. The Chinese character for “home” is a Pig under a roof; just the one. In short the Pig Year is unlikely to be a Pig’s best year, Pig Month just piles it on.

What’s to be done about this? Not only for the above unfortunates but also those Oxen & Roosters whose plans may have not entirely fallen into place either? Again if your Year, Month, Day or Hour fall to these or the Pig, you may resonate.

The Pig is yin Water. And Water is communication; not represents, symbolises or stands for; Water is communication. Brooks babble and oceans roar and we are all 80%+ Water; the human being is a communicating creature. We are if you like, all pools in the same sea. And all Water is in downward pursuit of all other Water at any given time; Water above our heads – loft tanks and aqueducts as much as pregnant storm clouds – are inherently awkward. We suspect them because we know what the Water wants to do: to travel downwards as long as there is a down to travel to.

So it’s about communication this double Pig month; it brings an opportunity to disclose. Self-disclosure of course is the route to intimacy; when we share our profoundest fears we are to an extent relieved of them. Which is a healing process but often not an easy one. Many of us are programmed to mistrust vulnerability. Pigs more than most.

As I say, the Pig is yin Water and where yang is great, yin is small; where yang is rapid, yin is more stately; where yang is effusive, yin is more reserved. So where the inherently Yang Water Rat is often an effortless communicator, the Pig may have to learn to speak out. Unsurprisingly Pigs are sometimes not so good at asking for help.

Which means this month offers a big opportunity to listen. The solution to the Dragon’s characteristic angst has always been to heal and teach, to put the attention outwards. But in this lies the month’s prescription for us all. Within this missive you have some sort of guide but I’m suggesting something further: this month is the one to be aware of the cries for help. Some may be mute and some insistent, some near and some far. But let’s listen. It’s quite possibly not about you.
Richard Ashworth 2019

Where to be in November.
Summary: get your attention out. It may not be about you.
East, Ambition: Year Star: 6 Month Star: 9.
Stars 6 and 9 jockey for supremacy. Could mean good clean competition (and maybe not clean). Best to keep the East strong with Wood. Turbulent but assertive. Young men (who belong to the East of course) may like this just as it is. Not for boozing or schmoozing but perversely creative.
Assist: Wood: three solid plants.

Where not to be in November.
Summary: unhealthy, hazardous
North East, Wealth: Year Star: 2 Month Star: 5. Wu huang.
2 and 5 Stars connote minor ailments, loss and crisis. When they coincide at the so-called Ghost Gate of the North East, they’re also full of unhelpful surprises. Steer clear. If this is your roost, clear out; just for now, the following months look pretty good.
Mitigate: Add t’ang lung charm. Other than the saltwater cure which is in my experience both hit-and-miss and messy, t’ang lung is the only counter that works

The Wood Dog Month Animal by Animal
The Dog is a tad frustrated,
The Pig is still on their mettle.
The Rat may see obstacles immediately ahead,
The Ox prepares for power,
The Tiger returns once more,
The Rabbit is in charge,
The Dragon is in opposition,
Rescue for the Snake may be seem distant,
The Horse gets the breaks,
The Sheep experiences breakup of some sort,
The wise Monkey hangs out
while
The Rooster may be looking over her shoulder,

The best way to wring value from your ba zi (that is Chinese Horoscope) is to identify your birth Month, Day & Hour Animal as well as your Year. Your ba zi is a unique cocktail of these & it’s as unlikely that all four are compromised at once as it is that they are all blessed. If in doubt seek an expert.

A 3 month                                     favours assertion & aspiration.

Wood Dog

This month’s lo shu: unhelpful wu huang 5 West and san sha North.

Stop & Search: the Wood Dog Month, 2019.
If external differences in rank correspond with differences in inner worth, and if inner worth forms the criterion of external rank, people acquiesce and order reigns in society.”
The Book of Changes, Hexagram 10. Lu Treading.

Pig and Dog are mutually antagonistic. Technically this antipathy is called Gip Sat. Forgetting the plus side for a moment, the Dog can be er…dogged and the Pig can be a swine; together they may make for troubled times.

What’s most admirable about the Dog is probably loyalty but consistency can degenerate to obstinacy; the proverbial Dog in the Manger. World’s most famous Dog currently: Donald Trump. Those qualities, restlessness and immovability are not just Trump’s but also the qualities of the month; some might say of the Era perhaps because they are attributes of those born in 1946 (like Trump, Bill Clinton & George W. Bush) 1958, 1970, 1982 and 1994 as well during the month of October, hours between 7 and 9pm and certain days you’d need a Chinese Calendar or an expert to identify. Look around you: umbrellas, climate protest, shameless despots, this Dog/Pig conflict is impossible to miss.

Among the Pig’s virtues on the other hand are a multitude of talents and sensitivity as to what to say and when; the flip side can be a lack of awareness of the needs of others and a reluctance to share emotionally. Sometimes the Pig has to be prised open like an oyster. Which can of course release a pearl.

And there you have the key notes of the whole of this year: our worst characteristics reflected back to us in our leaders, giving us an opportunity to learn and re-choose. “Won’t get fooled again,” as Pete Townshend wrote, not I imagine intending it to be Boris Johnson’s theme music any more than Mick Jagger intended “You can’t always get what you want” as Trump’s. On the other hand Jagger who as a Sheep has some power over the Dog, might usefully wield it. The Dog can fawn – ask Vladimir Putin.

Put Dog & Pig together and you have a roller coaster. This is not the month for the risk averse to strike out. But for the fearless – typically Horses, Tigers and indeed Dogs – it’s home from home. “A bloody war & quick promotion,” as my Father used to say. Interestingly Rabbits may find success if they keep their heads down and continue to burrow. Not so easy for Dragons and Roosters who are best advised to consolidate, or for Monkeys and Rats who may wander beyond the flow. Wood Rooster Townshend may just want a quiet life: Can’t Explain.

You’ll likely find some of these Animals somewhere in your ba zi – if in doubt, ask – and you’re almost certain to find advantage to be taken. If you were born in a Rabbit month, for instance, however parlous your social life, your career will be advancing. An afflicted Rooster born on a Tiger day may be especially happy at home right now. There’s lots more of course.

I’ve written at length elsewhere about the crash that’s coming. It has indeed started. The Watchtower was last month’s Hexagram of course but this remains a time to watch and wait rather than to leap. And er…don’t go West, young man.

Where to be in October.
Summary: take stock in order to move forward.
East, Ambition: Year Star: 6 Month Star: 1.
A winning combination: 6 and 1 just need an 8 (ie yin Earth) to form a wealthy 168 combination in the East. Best to keep it quiet. Meditation and deep thought will tend to be served here. Also writing and study. The odd dalliance is possible. Favours women over men.
Assist: Earth: one large crystal, female presence.

Where not to be in October.
Summary: stagnant, hazardous
West, Intervention: Year Star: 1 Year, Annual san sha Month Star: 5.
Not here. Facing or locating West is hazardous for the middle-aged man and the Second Son at this time, especially a Rooster (born 1945, 57, 69, 81, 93). Best given a miss or indeed a Miss. Be very careful with Water here; anything stagnant should be drained right away.
Mitigate: Metal eg Metal implements & ornaments.

Look & Listen: the Water Rooster Month, 2019.
A superior personality will have a view of the real sentiments of the great mass of humanity and thus cannot be deceived.” The Book of Changes Hexagram 20.

Message to Rooster: when the superficial seems enough, dig deeper.

A Rooster Month in a Pig Year is likely to bring some sort of relief following the antics of the Monkey Month. Wilful foolishness was the keynote then but this month is likely to bring both doubling down and apology. Awareness of error is a good place to start rebuilding and the Rooster brings some consciousness as to what sort of figure we have been cutting.

Such a revelation can be mortifying and offer a choice between repeating ourselves shamelessly or waking up. These kinds of trends have been clear in public life but possibly more subtle at home or at work. Opportunities to heal may present themselves in a similar way. This may prove easiest for Dragons and hard for Rabbits – perhaps you have been pampered or blinkered. The rest of us are somewhere in between.

Follow the suggestions about where you locate particularly carefully this month (pp5&6) and pay special attention to the days when you have a special edge (p4); if any of the Animals of the Four pillars of your ba zi are here you have an opening. Use it – these dates take hours of calculation and I’m not making this stuff up.

Interestingly one aspect of this and the 4 at the heart of September’s magic square may see female candidates for US President falter; it’ll be the end of the road for several. But not all. Western woman, as the Dalai Lama suggested, will save the world yet.

Note: this is all very simplistic. No astrological analysis can do you full justice and always having choice, you are as a wise man once said to me, the camera not the crisis. Nothing I nor anyone else can advise frees you from the need to make decisions.

The best way to wring value from these brief prognostications, remains to identify Month, Day & Hour Animal as well as that for your Year. Your ba zi is a unique cocktail of these and it’s as unlikely that all four are compromised at any given time as it is that they are all blessed. If in doubt seek an expert.

Where to be in September.
Summary: growth and gain.
South, Bright Future: Year Star: 3 Dragon Virtue Month Star: 8.
3 & 8 make Wood enabling a late resurgence of Summer Fire. So if you locate here or face South, expect attention. Such attention may have to be earned but be ready for it; consider perhaps how you’ve ducked it before. Even if you think that’s the last thing you’ve been doing; attachment gets in the way for most of us. East Group kuas 4, 3, 1, 9 such as 1988 Earth Dragons & 1952 Water Dragons (I’ve written about these elsewhere) get breaks against the odds but anyone can earn approval here.
Encourage: Wood (ie plants) also open space.

Where not to be in September.
Summary: all sorts of unhelpful
North West, Authority: Year Star: 9 tai sui Month Star: 5.
The 5 Star in the North West implies the abuse of power; the complaisance of the patriarchy. And the shiny red 9 just makes it worse. Humour is required; a patriarch in this location or entering by such a door needs to take himself less seriously; if he doesn’t others may do it for him. That actually would be the role of a woman seated NW this month; if that’s you, go for it, you will make a worthwhile difference. The 9 is androgynous so gender issues are likely to arise.
Mitigate: Water: external Water butt – just for now. Avoid Wood

A One-Day on-line Workshop on the Book of Changes

September 4, 2019

A One-Day on-line Workshop on the Book of Changes
with
Richard Ashworth.
October 19th/20th 2019.

“Only collective moral force can unite the world.” Hexagram 45 T’sui; Massing; Lake over Earth.

The Book of Changes is a miraculous thing. Essentially it’s just sixty four images and yet a reading can be so personalised and so up to the minute. Generals, philosophers, politicians, poets, artists and calligraphers have consulted the I Ching or Yi for guidance for over three thousand years. Whether we’re considering the recipes of Ken Hom, Sun Tzu’s Art of War, the obscure procedures of classical feng shui or the labyrinthine mysteries of Qi Men Dun Jia, the roots are in the Yi.
The Yi has its origins in ancient shamanic practices but it has probably never been more in use than it is today. Each Hexagram or six-line figure, corresponds to one of sixty four states of being, sixty four moods or sixty four puzzles, if you will. Each line like life, is in constant motion and as each line changes in accordance with certain rules, it offers a way to progress from the situation in which we find ourselves into another. It won’t necessarily be better but it will be different.
On the 19th & 20th October I will be running one-day workshops looking at the history of the Book, its influence on feng shui, divination, prediction, acupuncture, TCM and on Chinese culture, from cuisine to military strategy. But above all we will look at the transformation concealed between its lines and how we may use it in our lives and work.
There are two one-day workshops, both online by Zoom; on Saturday the 19th we start at 10am BST to accommodate my European students; on Sunday at 3pm BST for the rest of the World. The workshops run for approx 6 hours with breaks.
We only put these things on when the Universe has made it absolutely clear that it is appropriate and the fact is that most places have already been allocated to my students. But there are a few places left if you move fast. The cost is £175.00 and the Early Bird price of £150 expires September 10th 2019.

If you would like to participate please email: sheilaashworthfengshui@gmail.com

Hope to see you.

Selecting Auspicious and Personalised Dates

May 27, 2019
A One-day Zoom live Workshop with Richard Ashworth
Saturday 15th (UK) & Sunday 16th June (World).
Basic familiarity with Heavenly Stems & Earthly Branches required.

When the Beijing Olympics opened at 8.02*am on the 8th of August 2008, an astonishing 4.7 billion people were watching. That’s around 70% of the world’s population. 4.7 billion is a big number. And the 8th August a very carefully chosen date. Anyone who believes that today’s hard nosed commercial China has abandoned traditional methods of divination, need only look a little beneath the surface of that date. Someone knew what they were doing.

For at least 3000 years Chinese diviners have been consulting the Stems and Branches that make up the Chinese Zodiac Animals in order to select the most auspicious dates for big decisions like when to engage battle or raise an Emperor but also for weddings, negotiations, interviews, examinations, celebrations and razor’s edge choices. And they don’t seem to have done too badly.

The 8’s in the above date reflect of course the fact that in Chinese tradition the number 8  is reckoned especially fortunate. What is also so is that the Pillars of the day are perfectly aligned. Equally the sequence of daily Officers and Mansions of the Moon, are auspicious beyond coincidence. And there’s much more. This is a skilfully chosen date.

In each of these two live online workshops we will examine the use of the above and other sequences to gain an edge. But there’s more again.

Whoever advised the PRC knew the ancient Xuan Kong Da Gua method of matching dates to places and people. It may be that whoever had millions of kids queuing around the block for the new Harry Potter book in the summer of 2007 did too. Perhaps also consider the timing of the 2016 European Referendum at the Summer Solstice, a moment as any astrologer will tell you, when many are at their least rational. And this week’s Euro elections, held at the very moment the seasonal qi reverses.

These last may seem fanciful but the power of the method is clearly not and on the 15th and 16th June we will look at a variety of ways for tailoring dates, times for placing Water and for building, getting married, making big decisions and many other purposes. Join us.

We’ve almost filled these sessions by invitation from among my own students but if you have a working knowledge of Stems and Branches and would like to know more about letting good timing work for you, do apply (to sheilaashworthfengshui@gmail.com) for one of the three places left, I’ll walk you gently through the rest.

I hope to meet you then,

Best wishes,
Richard A.
* The odd two minutes were to acknowledge the sponsors O2, of course.

Via Zoom only (really simple to use, just ask)
It will last approx. 6 hours with approx a 1 hour break.

Saturday 15th June will start at 10am (BST).
Sunday 16th June will start at 2pm (14:00 BST).
