Who is a Dragon?

Years:  1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000.
Month*:  April
Hour: 07.00 am – 09.00

What is a Dragon?
The Dragon is yang earth, the most egotistical of the branches as well as being generally considered the most powerful. Putting aside conventional rules of animal compatibility, everyone is either fascinated by the Dragon or suspicious. Many are both.
Though charming and affable, like the Pig, the Horse and the Rooster, the Dragon suffers the self clash which makes him unsuited to working with his equals. Dragons often live alone and enjoy their own company. Sometimes they claim to even when they don’t. Often what he experiences as joy is a subtle experience that others find puzzling. The Horse for instance who likes to dance on tables, sometimes thinks the Dragon is a high maintenance prima donna. Even the Dragon’s ally the Monkey, contrasts his own goonish delights with the impassive Dragon and can make no sense of it.

And yet the Dragon delivers. Sometimes awkward and gauche, the Dragon can appear incompetent and yet still win. The steadfast Dog whose workings always lead to a logical answer detests this about the Dragon and may sabotage him. Put simply the Dog thinks the Dragon goes on a bit. The Ox and the Sheep share something of this attitude but are more passive about it.

The Chinese ideogram for thunder is a Dragon under a raincloud. Remember that all over the world rainclouds speak of plenty. Drenched is good if you’re looking for growth. The Dragon month is April, the time of sudden change. The character of the Dragon is like the awkward times before a storm breaks.

The Dragon does not naturally co-operate or easily share confidences. He will however grudgingly work with those he considers his inferiors as long as they are very clear about the pecking order. This is the central weakness of the unbalanced Dragon. King Lear was a Dragon where Othello may have been a Tiger and Hamlet probably a Snake. Up herself? Possibly.

The Dragon’s traditional partners are the hands-on Monkey and the plotting Rat. These three may not mix socially however. They need a task to cooperate upon, otherwise they find it hard to connect. Socially the Dragon will seek out the Rooster and the Horse both of whom can act as pr or spokesperson. Alone or teamed-up, the Dragon is just as creative as he feels like being. He can instantly magic up wealth and as rapidly squander it. Neither Horse nor Rooster are much help in this regard although a benevolent Rat and a diligent Monkey would be.

The Dragon and the Snake form the House of Magic. The Dragon is the Sorceror, the Snake his apprentice. So Merlin was a Dragon and his story illustrates the other central weakness of the Dragon: that he can be beguiled by the glamour of the Rooster. This coupling takes the Dragon off track. In a Rooster year the Dragon may forget all his carefully laid plans and go off-piste. In a Pig year they may have to re-think much of their approach to life in time for the boom times of the Rat year that follows.

Note to Employers: A Dragon employee is the best there is if the task suits him. It had better suit him because he will do precisely what he feels like either way.

Note to Dragons: Unbalanced Dragons fall perhaps into two categories: one is typified by shameless mischief-maker 1952 Water Dragon Vladimir Putin, the other by would-be statesman Boris Johnson (1964 Wood Dragon). Both of you – check your facts! It may be in order to justify the unjustifiable, but make sure you’re on solid ground.

The Dragon in 2019

As one Dragon I know very well puts it “They don’t realize I’m always working in the background”. By nature, Dragons are always working, consciously or unconsciously. Dragons magically give the illusion that making the earth move is effortless. Sometimes it is. People will take advantage of that if you let them, using your magic for their own ends. That path leads to darkness. Morgan Le Fay was a Dragon who was co-opted.

Nancy Pelosi was born in a Metal Dragon year (1940) on an Earth Dragon Day. She was meant to blaze a trail to power for women. Nancy’s most recent feat was disarming Trump by playing the Mom card, followed by being elected Speaker of the House for the second time. Doing something brilliant and totally unexpected at age 78 is such a Dragon move. This is the result of years of honing her craft and her timing. She is always working behind the scenes.

In 2018 Dragons have been overworked. You’ve been fending off the clumsy attacks of unbalanced Dogs, as well as coming to the rescue of the bullied: Sheep, Ox and even Pig.

You may be exhausted as we shift into 2019. It’ll be a relief to know it’s only a temporary situation when you find that your rhythms and usual knack for timing are off. Like your biggest rival, the Dog, you are waiting in the wings until 2022. Dragons have plenty of time to practice directing attention where it is needed, rather than consistently inward to their work.

The first quarter of 2019 may feel like a less meaningful version of the same thankless job you were doing last year, but Earth piles up. Keep disempowering bullies for long-term rewards. Towards the end of March you’re done with that.

Your usual self clash comes in April, making you unaware about what is going on in the world outside your head. Your power is taken for eccentricity when you think you are smarter than anyone else in the room. That’s so 2012. Catch up. Pay attention. There is something or someone wanting to erode your power behind your back.

The Snake, your partner in the House of Enchantment, is clashed in May. The Snake is the Little Dragon, or as I like to say, the Sorcerer’s Apprentice. To avoid the fallout of the Snake’s clash with the Pig, be truthful. There’s trouble in paradise this year. You can defuse it by talking with your partner about relationship issues. The truth will come out one way or another. Trying to be covert about your discontent and seeking intimacy elsewhere only leads to heartbreak.

Don’t go overboard with honesty though. Be careful who you share your secrets with, especially if you sleep in a bedroom located in the west of your house.

The year doesn’t really take off for you until August when you can expect either money challenge, or the opposite, for the rest of 2019. The outcome of this prediction relies on the makeup of your BaZi in which the dynamics of all 4 pillars are analyzed, as opposed to one branch.  I can tell you more about that.

The Rabbit in the Year of the Earth Pig 2019

Who is a Rabbit?

close up of rabbit on field

Years:  1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999.
Month*:  March
Hour: 05.00 am – 07.00

Day: Ask Us

* Caution:the start of the Chinese month can be as early as the 4th & as late as the 9th, depending on the year. I can let you know this too.

What is a Rabbit?
The Rabbit is yin Wood, essentially gentle and domestic. Her time is early morning; the legend has it that she and the Rooster swapped places which is why the cock crows in the Chinese Zodiac not at dawn but at dusk. The Rabbit rules the Spring therefore – think of March Hares and Easter Bunnies – and the Rooster the autumn.

The Rabbit is subtle, in keeping with her yin nature. She provides service readily and is often suited to catering and caring. But her preparedness to roll up her sleeves makes her the unexpected queen of networking. If you want to be introduced to the person in charge, ask a Rabbit.

Although giving the impression of a reluctance to be in the spotlight Rabbits are often performers but equally often are more at home behind the scenes. Writer-composer (of the musical “Matilda”) Tim Minchin fits this bill. Devoted Dad David Beckham perhaps also and strangely introvert Prime Minister Gordon Brown. All clearly pretty good at making connections.

The Rabbit can wait her turn; vigilance and patience are typical. Her natural allies are the Pig and the Sheep. This is a house-proud team and the Rabbit is a team player. Her unexpected friend is the Dog who values her ability to charm without threat.

The Rabbit also belongs to the gathering known as the Flowers of Love (or Plumflowers) along with the Horse, the Rooster and Rat. She may often find herself clearing up behind these three extroverts and quite often the cuddle-bunny will obtain a life partner from the leavings of her more obviously glamorous colleagues.

The Rabbit tends to be conservative with a small “c”. Early rising is typical but this tendency to the yang of early alertness may be demonstrated by the yin of sleeping in. Lazybones or insomniac, sleeping is an issue. This is yin and yang.

Because of the unflattering connotations of the local word for Rabbit, in Vietnam this branch is called the Cat. Intuitively this does not sit right. The ideogram so clearly has ears. Yin Wood relates to the late Spring, leaves and flowers and grass, none of which are feline attributes.

In some ways the Rabbit epitomises yin. Yang Wood may be characterised as an upwards movement like the growth of a tree. Yin Wood is more of an outward expansion like the spread of grass. What these two expressions of wood have in common is irresistibility. But they are very different types of irresistibility. To counter yang Wood we need yang Metal: an axe will cut down the biggest tree. But you could attack a lawn with that same axe and not remove all the grass in a lifetime. This is the power of yin Wood.

Wood is both stubborn and flexible. Yin Wood (as characterised by Soen, the wind of the South East) is thorough as well as organised: “gentle and thorough but ultimately adamant” as the Book of Changes has it.

Hexagram 53 of the Book of Changes, “Gradual Progress” describes this: the tree grows against all the odds either because it throws itself absolutely upon the mercy of the tao or because it has a detailed plan that it follows meticulously. Or both.

The Dragon is said to lose money when the Rabbit arrives. This may be because the Dragon is distracted by his neighbour who is so apparently different in nature. This is not a great pairing but the fact is that the Rabbit sitting between the Tiger and the Dragon, shares qualities with both.

Partnership with the Tiger is sometimes formalised as the House of Diplomacy. The Rabbit offers carrot while the Tiger wields a stick. This arrangement exemplifies the truism that more is achieved with a kind word and a gun than with a kind word alone.

Wood represents bone, spine and hair as well as eyes: the light is Fire but the receiving organ is Wood. The Rabbit is often not strong in these regards unlike the Tiger. This is yin and yang.

Finally it’s worth appreciating that the wooden table you’re probably seated by is wood but not Wood. Wood is always growing which is obviously enough not true of anything else; not animals, people, cutting edges or stones. Usable Wood in feng shui terms, is alive. Dead Wood is often considered to be Earth, motionless and ashen.

My Seattle based Student Stephanie Stewart’s forecast for the Rabbit in 2019 follows, do look her up: https://stephaniejstewart.com/

The Rabbit in 2019

The Rabbit’s profile has been elevated for the last couple of years. 1987 Fire Rabbits especially have been under extreme pressure. 2018 was so much better than 2017, but still stressful. You’d prefer not to, but you’ve put yourself out there anyhow. Kudos to you 1949 Earth Rabbit  Elizabeth Warren.

For a Rabbit, a Dog year brings public success. Colin Kaepernick, a 1987 Fire Rabbit, was an outcast in the NFL in the Rooster year of 2017 due to his nonviolent protest of violence. In September 2018 Nike took a risk and Kaepernick was signed on as a spokesperson in recognition of his firm stance. But even now, most teams think of him as a public relations problem not worth taking on. They can’t rely on his loyalty to a brand to override his principles. Kaepernick has accepted his new leadership role with the kind of grace you can expect from a Rabbit. No need to make a big fuss. The Wood energy of the Rabbit is both gentle and inexorable. Kaepernick will have an offer to play quarterback again, probably in July.

In domesticity or at work, the Rabbit is often displaced by the controlling Pig who is happy to provide for you but would rather not work in tandem. That’s less of an issue in 2019. Reclaim your rights and responsibilities in February when the Pig is distracted by the Tiger. Stand firm and earn the Pig’s trust. Your ability to do that is kind of a big deal.

The Pig year demands taking care of family and other domestic matters. It’s time to resolve lasting grudges or quarrels with family, especially parents and other ancestors. Your associates, including older and younger relatives will be seeking your assistance. Help them to form or reinforce a support system. The Rabbit’s loyalty has been in question since 2017. Set things straight with talk and trust. You might think the title is beyond your pay grade, but this year the Rabbit is the Year Subduer. So settle things.

To that end, in 2019 Rabbits can employ the unusual authority they had in the Dog year to good effect. You can be bossy until the end of March. Come off the bench early if you want to work for a new company or group in July. Don’t wait – by November your window will have closed.

Your most productive months this year will be February, March, May, June and July. Set goals and timelines accordingly. In July is the Sheep will help you draw a big crowd. Organizing big events, attending family reunions, or joining groups makes for leaps and bounds.

After July the Metal element, along with the overwhelming amount of hidden Water may be tough on your health. Worry may bring sleep issues – too much or too little. Take some time off in August and/or September if you can.

Anxiety may peak in December because you’ve disregarded important information that could set you at ease. This will have something to do with how you were raised. Ask a trusted elder or other family member for help. Advice or assistance Rabbits have ignored may come back to haunt in 2020 too.

What Does the Rooster Month (from 8th September) Hold?

The Watchtower

Hexagram 20

The Rooster Month, Animal by Animal.

During this Wood Rooster month:

The Rat may feel overshadowed.

The Ox may feel surprisingly supported.

The Tiger may recover from defeat.

The Rabbit may want to stay home.

The Dragon may feel special.

The Snake may take several steps forward.

The Horse may rise to competition.

The Sheep may seek solitude.

The Monkey may rest.

The Rooster may seek grace.

The Dog awaits.

and

The Pig is the protector.

Berried.

Today the blackberries are leaning towards me as if they want to be picked. Two or three days a week at this time of year I pluck them fresh for our morning smoothie. This ticks several boxes: that is to say a boost of Vitamin C with all the benefits of fresh fruit which is in this case (extremely) locally grown. Which was good feng shui long before it became the stuff of discussion on Radio 4. “Eat local food, drink local Water,” Master Chan Kun Wah used to say. Yesterday I had to stretch for the berries, today they come easily to hand.

Blackberries need to be plump but not mushy and they must be caught before – God forbid – they grow those whiskers that even the finest liquidiser blade struggles to dissolve. It’s September, the pure qi of the Monkey month; there are plenty to choose from.

Although it’s a fine day, the Autumn warmth is turning to the chillier bak low, that is the time of White Dew. It’s a distinctive back-to-school, end of holiday feeling. My hibiscus is hibiscing but the sunflowers have peaked; they stand like Eddard Stark waiting to be decapitated. Despite the sun, I can feel the damp in the air.

Where to do what, when and why.

The 8 Star lands North West this month and of course the North West is favoured all year. Like the (related) symbol for infinity, 8 speaks of limitless possibility. This is where to locate to catch the breaks. Facing NW or employing a North Western door will tend to have the same sort of effect this month also.

Women on the verge.

I’ve been working a great deal with women in the midst of divorce recently. “How did I misunderstand him so badly?” one asks me. “He seemed such a nice guy.” I offer something gnomic like “Most men can leave a lover but few can leave their Mum.” Which is true. But mostly I listen and compensate for neglected South West areas and ferocious North West ones. One house features a single external wall which pushes into the building between North and North West like a siege engine, effectively making land over to the neighbours. There are few more intrusive feng shui flaws than this. The aggressive North West is the realm of the Father, the North represents the Mother being squeezed out. Pick the bones out of that. Within this house we place protective Water with great precision on the 3rd September, the best day for some time for such a cure and we start to choose strategies. I have to be careful not to exceed my brief; I’m a feng shui man not a lawyer. So I prescribe Chapter One of Sun Tzu’s “Art of War”. He’s the guvnor on winning.

The Rooster Month in the Sheep Year.

The Rooster may not have had a great shake of it this year. Or at least that may be the way she tells it. But often the Rooster simply hasn’t looked up from their self-punishment long enough to notice that they’re doing okay. How many openings did you miss or fail to acknowledge?

So in your own month you’d expect a boost wouldn’t you? Well the Rooster suffers from the so-called “self-clash” which means this month is an even bigger challenge. It will tend to empower Oxen and Snakes and Dragons but some Roosters may be too busy bemoaning their luck to appreciate good fortune. Your own month demands you step up. If you do, you may experience September as a peak. One proviso: every gain at the expense of another leaves you in debt. Generosity this month pays big dividends.

As for everyone else; the Rooster can inhibit the Rabbit. So Rabbits – like Hungarian demagogue Viktor Orban – ought perhaps to lower their sights this month. There is no fence high enough to solve the refugee problem, Viktor. Forget it.

This is a month of attention-seeking behavior which may be most visible in the Horses such as David Cameron and Angela Merkel. The need for approval of course is a function of insecurity. Which means those most uncertain breeds, politicians and celebrities will be especially intrusive. And the Dog can get very impatient around about now. You want to get on with it while everyone else appears to be painting their nails. Take Fire Dog Donald Trump for instance, safe in the certainty that even Americans are not daft enough to elect him, continuing to let his mouth write cheques no administration could ever cash. Pigs may be more modest but nothing can keep the limelight off Earth Pig Caitlyn (nee Bruce) Jenner.

That’s September, step up or be generous or both.

A very Chinese puzzle.

The traditional Chinese finger puzzle tightens over the hand with every struggle. China has been in the grip of the benign puzzle of Confucian thinking since the fourth century BCE. This means that family and a stable society have been the priorities all that time. These are sound values of course but they come with an assumption which is this: Daddy knows best. Whether he is the ruthless Ming usurper Yongle whose victims included most of the males of his family or Qin Shi Huang Di a huge chunk of whose retinue, horses, stewards, servants and wives were buried alive with him, Mao Tse Tung or Deng Xiao Ping, Daddy’s decisions are final and infallible. And down twenty-odd centuries, a dozen dynasties, countless tyrants, even more countless massacres and no discussion, these values have persisted. And now right on time, just as Sheep turns to Monkey, China has its very own financial crisis; a very Confucian one. The powers-that-be imprison a few journalists for expressing an opinion and legislate against the trickery that makes up a market place: insider trading, short selling and the dead hand of stop-loss algorithms, these things have been the life blood of the Hang Seng for decades.

But you can’t run over a stock market with tanks any more than you can a blackberry. Nor is it practical to line either market or fresh fruit up against a wall and shoot them. Stock markets are free expression personified. No legislation in China will stay the hand of some pleonetic trader on Wall Street or the City of London any more that it will change the fact that no company loses 8% of its value over night. It’s all about confidence, a manic depressive pattern if you like; depression followed by over-confidence, Water followed by Fire. For these and other reasons many of us long since read June 2014 as the peak of all markets, the apogee of capitalism perhaps and we seem to have been right. And Xi Jinping* may, for better or for worse be a very different man from Deng but what’s for sure is that however many times the PRC responds to opposition with violence whether it be Tibet, Google, FaceBook, the Umbrella Revolution or that kid with the shopping bag crossing Tiananmen Square, dissidence will rise again. You cannot imprison the human mind. And as long as free expression, of which a stock market crash is the essence, is suppressed, as long as Ai Wei Wei can’t get proper travel documents, China may continue to manufacture the world’s trainers but she won’t design them and stock markets will remain volatile however much Daddy might wish it different.

*Which is not to contrast him with our own largely spine- and compassion-free representatives btw. Nor for the avoidance of doubt, that markets should be unregulated. George Soros is the guvnor on this. Read his “Open Society” perhaps.

Rooster Pillars; know your Rooster rating.

Birth in the Rooster hour (17:00pm-19:00pm): beautiful children.

Birth in the Rooster month (September*): accountancy may suit you.

Birth on the Rooster day#: marriage may not be for you.

Birth in the Rooster year: particularly sociable parents.

* Caution, the Chinese month generally starts and finishes a few days after ours.

Imperial Feng Shui – what’s happening

Urban Quality: feng shui on the streets.

Over the weekend of May 9th/10th  Manuela Madeddu will be addressing the 9th Feng Shui Society Conference in London. Manuela is a gifted architect who brings something very fresh to the proceedings; her obsession is urban quality; that is the design of the spaces we share. Manuela is a senior student of mine and a member of my Padowan mentoring programme. I recommend you attend. Also my good friend Victor Garza, the only Mexican I know resident in Central China, is talking. He’s always entertaining and enlightening. We will be there in support too. And if you’re considering studying with me you can ask Manuela in person what you might be letting yourself in for.

In your own time: learn feng shui & ba zi via Skype.

And if you were thinking of feng shui study, you might like also to know the following:

“Bless you. You’ve saved my life, Richard, literally and figuratively. I’m getting so much more than feng shui from working with you. And, I sing your praises for that, literally and figuratively.”
Nancy C.

Nancy’s in Tennessee, a place known for singing, as it happens. When we first offered Skype, I had no idea how much I would learn. Of course now we can fit in with your schedule; we can link up whether you’re in Singapore, Berlin or London. Or Tennessee. And within limits we can make sessions longer or shorter and more or less frequent.   What I hadn’t realised was how this would open us up to students of greater or lesser accomplishment: this year I have taught total beginners straight off the street as well as professionals and others whose skill lay between the two. Some people need more visual material, some more; some flourish one-to-one and some wither in classes and so on. It’s been a whole education. Not least for me.

Announcement: My ba zi (Chinese Astrology) and feng shui  courses are mutually complementary (ie if you attend one in person or via Skype, you may well want to attend both). If you book and pay now for both courses, instead of £3000 for the two, you pay only £2000. If this sounds like your sort of thing, now’s the time to let us know.  If you’d like to discuss your suitability or indeed mine, please email me at richardashworthfengshui@gmail.com or call the office on 01483 428998

Tune Up Kits for 2015, the Wood Sheep, Year of Gathering.

In Singapore there are feng shui Masters everywhere. And every year the energy changes; actually the distribution of qi is changing every second but the annual change is long-lasting enough to give each year a whole new identity.  So most Novembers I go to South East Asia to find out what they’re expecting of the New Year. I didn’t do it this time. Consequently all my Animal Forecasts and my Overview of the Year were done from first principles. And because every year is different, the locations and orientations of our desks, beds, offices and streets mean very different things. Sometimes a Western door is especially helpful, sometimes working in the North East will support expansion and so on.  Which is by way of letting you know that my Tune Up Kit for 2015 which tells you what to do where and why is now available. It costs £50 or £100 with a one-hour Skype call and comes with unlimited email back up. Email becci@imperialfengshui.info if you want a pack. It’s a big word, unlimited, so compassion, please.

Animal Forecast 2015: 12. A Rasher Time, outlook for the Pig in 2015

February 19, 2015

Who is a Pig?

Years:  1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007.
Month*:  November
Hour: 09:00 pm – 11:00 pm
Day: ask us

* Caution: the start of the Chinese month can be as early as the 4th & as late as the 9th, depending on the year. I can let you know this too.

What is a Pig?
The weakness and the strength of the yin water Pig is to think they know what is good for them. Generally they do, and the maddening thing is that they are actually right often enough to make advice close to impossible. By extension this means you  may believe you know what is right for everybody else.

Versatile and wilful, gifted at whatever they do, the Pig is the sign of the inventor. Edison was a Pig, as is Hillary Clinton and Wikileaker Julian Assange. Perfectly-balanced Pigs can literally almost do anything but they don’t always handle the truth well. They don’t much like reflective advice from others and they often hate not to know for sure. Vagueness is very uncomfortable for the Pig, this trio of the multi-gifted being no exception: Edison was of course an obsessive patenter, Hillary determined to get Wall Street onside in the teeth of her liberal credentials  and Assange, confident that he knows better than anyone else what the world needs to know. This does not make any of them mistaken but the truth can be a moveable feast.

The Pig is communicative because it is a water sign. A balanced Pig (perhaps March birth around mid-afternoon) is a great audience and typically gets the listening/talking ratio just right. An unbalanced Pig can shoot off at the mouth and give (or take) away the farm before she knows it. Does any of this sound like – to pluck a name from nowhere – Earth Pig Simon Cowell?

More likely, you are prone to withdrawing into silence. The Pig can sulk but can also withdraw simply out of disinterest and be perfectly cheerful when challenged on the withdrawal. The Pig child needs just the right mixture of carrot and stick. Too much stick and he is suppressed or resentful. Too much carrot and he can be smug. The balanced Pig is the most sensitive of the animals. The unbalanced Pig suffers an empathy bypass. As the parent of a Pig, just remember you are instrumental in this process. Your Piglet does not need to become a boor.

The Pig embodies the wood of creativity so they can be as adept with the written as the spoken word as well as the yang earth that makes them able to concentrate deeply. Many Pigs prefer to study in noisy rooms and many are effortless A-students as teachers of  first year undergraduates of 2015 may notice.

The Pig does not tend to like the Snake; one way or another they immobilise each other. The Snake’s intimate, the Monkey, can be a source of annoyance also.

The Pig’s most natural team is with the Rabbit and the Sheep. This is a domestic alliance. Together these three naturally make anywhere home. A perfect family might be Pig father, Rabbit mother and Sheep first-born. Once home, the Rabbit entertains while the Sheep ensures compatibility and the Pig does skilfully the tasks that are beyond her partners.

Traditionally the Pig also enjoys the company of the Tiger. You might think she’d be more cautious but she knows that the Tiger is uninterested in conquering anyone he considers easy meat. Of course he’s missing something here but the Pig’s fearless approach often disarms the Tiger before he realises.  And by the bye,  Pig’s literary ambition may burgeon in a Tiger year and flourish in a Rabbit one.
Although she may herself be more adventurous, the Pig also understands the loyal and consistent Dog. She respects the fact that every home needs its guardian. These two will tend to develop a camaraderie with its own distinctive banter. The Pig respects the Dog’s diligence and the Dog knows the Pig will compensate for his weakness.

The Pig also operates well as factotum for a group consisting of the Snake (whom she can’t otherwise stand for any length of time) the Monkey (see above) and the Tiger. For these she is, interestingly, the peacemaker and setter of standards. Without the Pig this grouping whose common interest is travel and mobility, can’t get off the ground.
One final note: the Pig suffers what is called the self curse. That is to say that she has limited patience with other Pigs. The Chinese character for a house is one Pig under a roof. Just the one.

Pig in Wood Sheep Year.

Stars include: secondary tin yute, pin choi

The Pig is puzzled this year. New and unexpected challenges have emerged; mostly pretty exciting. The Wood of the Wood Sheep ensures you have power and support. The danger is that you could be veering off track or withdrawing. You move so fast. You’re empowered but you’ve bitten off a lot. And you are so prone to believing the discouraging nonsense that sometimes sits between your ears; a mash-up of many unhelpful voices filtered through your own. Don’t treat it as an authority. The theme of the year is knowing your excuses and exploding them.

Traditionally the Pig is empowered by the Sheep. With the Rabbit,  a partnership is formed whose principal strength is in the home. So in a year in which this team dominates, expect to be home a great deal. You’ll like that; cooking for yourself and whoever cares to join you.  Define home a bit more widely also, perhaps; call your Mum occasionally and remake those other bonds you may have taken for granted.  You can take them for granted btw, but I shouldn’t.

Last year was very much a year of learning. This is more a time of teaching. You know things – perceptions as well as straightforward facts – that others need to know. You never talk down. You never under-estimate. You will be heard. Rely on that. If you’re not heard, is because you’re not speaking up. That’s yin Water.

On the world stage Hillary Clinton is a Pig and this is a big year for her, possibly the biggest of her life. Like Ms C, this year you define yourself. Step up to the plate. Take that risk. You will be supported; you do have a considerable team to call on. They’ve always known they can call on you and they are themselves in turn ready for your call.  This year don’t let those excuses your fertile mind gives birth to so easily, convince you anything you truly want is not possible. It is. You may have multiple ambitions; entertain them all.

This year is the first of a two-part offensive. In 2016 you rise to some sort of prominence. It may be that you have to wait till then or even the year after for the full reward you are due.  Meanwhile seek   diplomatic Rabbits to network for you but be prepared to do it for yourself. Find team-playing Sheep to build connections for you and the occasional Tiger to bust through barriers. If you can’t find such individuals, locate these qualities in yourself. The Pig is nothing if not versatile; you are Wood, Water and Earth, you can fit in and shine anywhere.

Blatant self-promotion may be distasteful to you. Examine whether this judgement  is useful but anyway be clear of the difference between yang marketing – you need me, buy now – and yin – I’m available if you’re up to it. Best times for advancement may be March and July. Be imaginative, be flexible, be brazen but above all, get on with it.

Elementally seek Wood, which is creativity.  It’s what the Pig is said to give birth to. Generally this can be interpreted as the written word. Locate the East and be there. Get up early in the morning and wring every gram of brightness out of the spring time.

You are so bright, show the world.

Health: some possible blockages. Eat wisely.

Money: no noticeable change. Yet.

Relationship: varied.

Feng Shui: The Rabbit in the East offers you breakthrough. Activate the Rat (due North) for relationship – whatever you mean by that. The Tiger (NE3) holds Dragon Virtue (for enhanced reputation) which may be the key this year.

Readers’ Digest Version: breakthrough if you want it.

Animal Forecast 2015: 11. Barking Restricted, outlook for the Dog in 2015

February 19, 2015

Who is a Dog?

Years:  1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006.
Month*:  October
Hour: 07:00 pm – 09:00 pm
Day: ask us
* Caution: the start of the Chinese month can be as early as the 4th & as late as the 9th, depending on the year. I can let you know this too.

What is a Dog?
The Dog is yang earth and a byword for good faith and consistency. Terriers and Rotweilers are both fierce and loyal. In mediaeval heraldry and Renaissance painting, the Dog in the form of the greyhound,  symbolises constancy.

So a Dog can be expected to revere tradition and have a strong family background. If a Dog commits to something they can generally be relied upon to see it to completion. The difference between male and female Dogs can be that the female gets the message quicker. Interesting to note that Kate Middleton and Prince William are twin Water Dogs of 1982; a very solid match because as a yang earth sign, the Dog is pretty immovable, an ideal best friend or protector. These two are, first and foremost, good friends.

The Dog’s thinking may not always be flexible but when he gets an idea, he really gets it. His natural grouping is with the hunters, the Horse and Tiger. The apportionment of tasks here is obvious: the Horse provides pace and the Tiger ferocity while the Dog watches the rear. If HR people studied Chinese metaphysics, more workplaces would zing: in business the Horse will tend to be the sales person, the Tiger the closer or credit controller and the Dog the provider of after-sales service or er…HR department.

The Dog excels at service because he never gives up. He will return your phone calls and keep that appointment. You’re the friend who sends a card every birthday and the spouse who remembers every anniversary. You care.

The Dog also, perhaps surprisingly, mixes well with the gentle diplomatic Rabbit. The Rabbit schmoozes while the Dog ensures that his colleague’s openness is not abused. The Dog makes a wonderful bodyguard and middle manager. A Dog employer will have achieved that position by sheer hard work and will demand the same from all around.

The Dog doesn’t like the Dragon because he’s such a smarty pants. Also the Dog can feel insecure around success without effort* and the Dragon creates with such apparent ease. You’re suspicious of magic. So you’re often not so keen on the mini-Dragon, the Snake either; you’d even resent the Horse (too damn flighty) except that you are scrupulously loyal to your own team#.

An unbalanced Dog is a bit of a shop steward. He knows his rights and the way things should be – often that’s the way they always have been btw. An unbalanced Dog (such as one with an October or mid-evening birth) is just too respectful. The smart Dog learns to ask questions.

The Dog will often have a strong spiritual agenda and if he has a blind spot it may be an inability to respect the difference between religion and spirituality or spirituality and therapy. Because this means he sticks to his guns, the Dog is suited both to new age therapy and religious persecution. He will not be thrown off by the opinions of others once he has committed to a line of action. In fact the unbalanced Dog can be thick skinned in matters of belief. Some Dogs would be ideally suited to being a Grand Inquisitor. The problem is that his motto ought to be “Do as you would be done by,” and he thinks it already is.

The Dog can work well with other Dogs and with the Pig. With the Pig he shares a love of home and team and they are so different they don’t crowd each other. Sometimes the Dog and Pig can be telepathically close; this is because they are adjacent signs in the calendar linked by the yang earth that is a feature of both. Sometimes this earth is expressed by banter or earthy humour. They can have a lot of fun together while getting the job done.

But the most powerful and most demanding role the Dog can play is in a creative team including the irritating Dragon, the autocratic Ox and the soft Sheep. If the Dog acts as conscience and bookkeeper, the Ox will relax, the Sheep toughen up and the Dragon acknowledge someone else for a change. If you are a Dog recruiting for non-executive directors, take note. What is great about the Dog is that if you find advice that works you will adopt it as if it were religion. Bless.

*Consider 1970 Dog George Osborne and his “hard-working families” trope.

Dog in Wood Sheep Year

Stars include: Moon.

Classically the meeting of Dog and Sheep is a break-up. This year has that about it; it’s possible that certain key assumptions in your life are false. If so by the way, they only reflect your inner truth. If the premises you act on are in error, you’re only deceiving yourself.

Such break-ups can be literal or figurative. And they’re all both healthy (in the great scheme of things) and preventable. The Dog’s big weakness is not questioning enough. You may believe your constancy is reflected in the outside world. And it’s not that good is not reflected everywhere but that what’s good and bad is a question of viewpoint. Some people find tickling painful and some enjoy being tied up and whipped. Apparently. There are, dare I say it, more than fifty grades of chi.

But the Dog is also a key player in the central dynamic of 2015, the Year of Gathering: the so-called “Bullying Punishment.” This fracas occurs when Ox and Sheep meet Dog. It’s a misunderstanding but often it looks like the most hideous confrontation. And obviously in a Sheep year it’s going to happen a great deal if only because the Sheep in the calendar is going to collide with real Dog and Ox people in Ox and Dog hours, days and months. When the punishment is sustained it speaks of damage; a ba zi with these characters early in life will need a great deal of love later on to straighten it out. It’s quite likely – but not certain – that you’re one of them.

So this year you deal with break-up of some sort. It could be relationship – especially if you were born on a Dog day – but it doesn’t have to be. That depends on the way you conduct the relationship. It is at least as likely a bust-up with a long-established client, customer or colleague, especially if your birth was in October, the Dog Month. And watch for the hardest one: birth hour between 7&9pm implies possible estrangement from your kids, your future dreams or both. The solution: trust yourself, be gentle and question everything.

And meanwhile the Bullying Punishment rages around you. The Sheep brings gathering, a drawing-up of lines. Teams form, families close ranks, marriages are re-committed to. And armies grow. You are likely to be personally involved; hardest-hit in July and October of course but you’ll already know from the events of January 2015 that January 2016 will test you as much. The inflexibility of the Ox will clash with the slavishness of the Sheep wherever you go. Arguments will break out about nothing – because they are about nothing; nothing that’s here and now and present at least. And both Sheep and Ox will tend to be in your face. These may be the actually astrologically cloven-hooved or people and situations that embody this tension. the Ox often stands for religion – with whose rigidity you may have little truck – and the Sheep for spirituality – which may be too airy-fairy for you to be comfortable with. Both will tend to demand your agreement this year.

What’s the solution? The Dragon. When the Ox, Sheep and Dog come together, they may hatch grand plans but they often lack the magic to bring them into reality. The Dragon is that magic. You may find it in yourself although you are very likely temperamentally unsuited to allowing an answer to emerge without fully understanding how it was arrived at. That Dragon quality can be tapped at SE1 (ESE) and during April of course and between 7 and 9 am every morning. It’s a kind of forgiveness. A letting go that allows magic through. Trust yourself, question everything and be alert for the presence of the Dragon.

All of the above sounds pretty testing but 2015 need not be. The Bullying Punishment arises most commonly as a great and positive breakthrough looms. This year your big project may call you and it may require tremendous preparation. Three of the four ducks required may be in a row and then one may fall. The Dragon is the fourth duck. The reason that the punishment is so common and so notorious is that so often, given the choice between big and challenging success and distractions like sickness and accidents, we falter and fall. The choice to rise, however it shows up, is the Dragon.

So a year of drama and tension but also of big opportunity. The question is whether you believe in magic, isn’t it?

Health: breathe more deeply to stay present in moments of pressure.

Money: you might acquire assets this year.

Relationship: better for female heterosexuals and gay males. More friendship than lust.

Feng Shui: South not much use. Seek NE3 (ENE); occupy, activate face.

Readers’ Digest Version: seek the magic embodied in the Dragon.

Animal Forecast 2015: 10. Game Bird, outlook for the Rooster in 2015

February 19, 2015

Who is a Rooster?

Years:  1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005.
Month*:  September
Hour: 05:00 pm -07:00 pm
Days: ask us

* Caution: the start of the Chinese month can be as early as the 4th & as late as the 9th, depending on the year. I can let you know this too.

What is a Rooster?
The Rooster is yin metal, the night bird, glamorous with an eye for presentation and detail. She appreciates an argument and likes to win but has little patience for causes that drag on. She will appreciate jewellery, fine art and good living and create wealth easily. Conversely of course, a dangerous Rooster like Qaseem Soleimani (Iranian General i/c of the Iraqi Army – Google him) can reject such distractions in order to serve a cause that has indeed dragged on for decades. This is yin and yang.

The rule this illustrates (by violating it) is that a typical Rooster is suited to work that involves short decisive arguments such as that of an advocate. Her brief passion is the perfect support for a client. She can defend with enormous commitment and then move on to the next one. That commitment is 100% but it is short lived. If she is in a job that involves holding her peace she may fret and become ill.

Osama bin Laden was a typical 1957 fire Rooster: one big splash and he was off. For you, a car must be fast, a partner challenging and life full of twists and turns. The Rooster is likely to be quick witted rather than profound, with a short attention span.

Her allies the Snake and the Ox are sometimes impatient with her because she can digress so widely and so easily but she brings to the metal alliance the pure competitiveness that the Ox might otherwise misuse and the Snake misunderstand. Think Ed Miliband snatching leadership of the opposition from under his brother’s nose. The Rooster is pure metal – that is determined to prevail at all costs – Snake and Ox are not. They will not win many cases or many contracts without her and they would do well to pay and respect her appropriately despite the fact that she demands longer holidays and a better remuneration package.  Conversely if she fails to respect a support system that dots i’s and crosses t’s in order to support the intuitive flashes that s/he can exploit but seldom generate, she will not prosper.

Her pitfalls are sex, drugs and rock’n’roll. She likes to party and her personality may be addictive; the Rooster prefers dusk to dawn and also the small hours.

The Rooster enjoys a powerful alliance with the Dragon in which she, uniquely in the average Dragon’s experience, may hold the whip hand. This is not always entirely healthy. She can bend the Dragon out of shape just as the Ox can bend the Rat. This sway must be employed responsibly otherwise both can be damaged. With that proviso this is one of the strongest and longest-lasting alliances in the Chinese zodiac.

Predictably the Rooster  is one of the charismatic Flowers of Romance. Success and glamorous partners come easily to her. Often a Rooster can punch above her weight in this regard. Cinderella was a Rooster and so is Yoko Ono. This effortlessness can make for complacency; bitterness is more common among middle-aged Roosters than any other animal. Not the remarkable Ms Ono btw. Roosters are often long-lived also btw.

With the Monkey she can form a commercial alliance. A business co-run by these two will be irresistibly attractive but may not open on time. It may not close promptly either and may also suffer the cash flow problems that come from poor financial prioritisation. A marriage would risk the same types of problem: great parties, early divorce. The unbalanced Metal creatures – Monkey and Rooster – sometimes know and understand precision but don’t respect it.

The cautious domesticated Rabbit is the nemesis of the Rooster who likes bling while the Rabbit can see no life in a stone. Any such relationship would generally be full of obstruction and passive aggression. The insistent wood of the Tiger is almost as maddening although his fierceness would at least engage the Rooster’s attention. The loyal, consistent Dog risks boring her rigid.

Rooster in Sheep Year.

Stars include: pin kun, man cheung, tin yute gwai yan, sik sun.

This year the Winter Solstice dung gee, coincides with the New Moon. The last time this happened was in 1938, a year which you’ll recall, was followed by some excitement. The man most associated with not noticing a world crumbling around him was 1897 Fire Rooster Neville Chamberlain.   And now it’s possible that the world depends on the Rooster rising from the naughty chair and putting attention on the many wrongs that need righting.

If nothing changed in a big way in 2012, you probably still have a couple of years to wait before you feel that you are truly present. But there is a way to make it faster. Below I make some suggestions. 2014 has been a demanding year, mostly because you demanded it be that way. There was plenty of good luck if you had just been prepared to let it come to you. So often the Rooster does not recognise good fortune when presented with it. Your role is to do with the well-being of others this year: family, children, the lost and the puzzled. It’s time to stop wrong-footing the world with cleverness and withdrawal. You are more puzzled than most, if truth were told.

The Rooster is the gambler, the charmer, the player of the odds; very smart, very attractive, very dangerous. Most of the threats now besetting the Earth are due to Rooster thinking; not necessarily to actual Roosters but to a particular mental approach. I avoided the term mind-set because half-digested quasi-psychological  sleep-terms like that are typical of this er…mind-set. Workshops on how to steal a march in business are packed with Roosters. They are the masters of quick, that is short-term thinking. They may have memorised the Seven Success Habits but they often lack any idea as to what to do with success or of how to be content. And unless we – and they – wake up, 2015 will just take us twelve months closer to the precipice. The point at which I gave up on transformation by way of business was when I overheard two salespeople discussing how to use a “Win-Win” strategy to win against competition. As Leonard Cohen wrote: “They sentenced me to 20 years of boredom for trying to change the system from within.” Enough.

The Chinese character kun is often translated as “clash.” And just as Horse was kun to Rooster last year, so this year Rooster is kun to at least the wood aspect of the Wood Sheep. The Rooster represents the profit in turning rainforest into pasture and the human genotype into patents.  The Rooster can be argumentative and a splitter of hairs. Whether this is virtue or vice depends upon how it is employed. This year the Rooster can advance short term through smarts and charm or long term through wisdom. Similarly this year the Rooster can bank their bonus or question the system. This is harder for you than most because the Rooster is naturally a conservative (small “c”) – which must be tough for 1969 Rooster Ed Miliband – and thinks of common sense as looking after No. 1.  Surely everyone gains that way; all ships rise with tide, don’t they? It isn’t happening and you are suffering. Time to wake up and smell the carbon fumes. Get your attention out.

Kun this way round means “man-woman relationship” to the male Rooster.  You have romance on a plate in 2015. Whether you’ll actually get to know someone is an entirely different question. Short-lived romance is more probable than eternal love. And this life-long skating on the surface of life is the routine and the  trap from which many Roosters never roam. But it’s not where realisation lies nor  where you’re likely to find self-actualisation or meaning. That will come with questioning your life-path and re-calibrating. The mature Rooster may be quite lonely but  poorly trained for anything else. February, March and particularly April offer you something else. It may just be a bigger bonus than last year and  if you employ it to make 2015 like 2014 only more so, you  may well find 2016 and the years beyond deeply distressing. If you employ this burst of energy to divert your life in the direction it wants to steer, you will be a different, happier and more fulfilled bird come 2016. And you can’t fake it.

One of the quirks of the year of the Wood Sheep is that you are likely to be sought out for advice. And you’ll doubtless give it, as ever. Your wisdom will only be worth heeding if you back it with example. No one forced you into the jam you’re in and many have offered you a leg-up. Perversely you have blamed some and warned off others for daring to call you on your irresponsibility. You’re not a martyr; consider some other points of view perhaps.

As I said, if nothing changed in a big way in 2012, you probably have a couple of years to wait before you feel that you are truly present. Your attraction to the superficial is likely to have convinced you that’s all there is. And you’re likely to argue for this half-life for a while yet rather than admit error. That would be a terrible pity.

Health: care with mouth and openings of the body.

Money: plentiful but not the point. Not the year for the pursuit of wealth per se.

Relationship: shallow relationship plentiful, marriage unlikely.

Feng Shui: Cautiously occupy the Ox (North East1) and load it with Metal. Don’t dig or drill.

Readers’ Digest Version: another year that leads up a ladder or down a snake. Your call.

Animal Forecast 2015: 8. Wool Gathering, outlook for the Sheep in 2015

February 17, 2015

Who is a Sheep?

Years:  1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015.
Month*:  July
Hour: 01:00 pm – 03:00 pm
Day: ask us

* Caution: the start of the Chinese month can be as early as the 4th & as late as the 9th, depending on the year. I can let you know this too.

What is a Sheep?
Idealistic, yin earth, not the top getter-onner, the Sheep has well-meant judgements about everybody which can sometimes keep her stuck in first gear. For the unbalanced Sheep (July birthday and/or mid-afternoon birth) ambition and foolishness are pretty much the same thing. On the other side of the fence the grass is not greener; it’s actually brown on both sides. The balanced Sheep though, as well as being an expert judge of people, knows exactly what matters and is not easily diverted from it. The arrangement for instance that Sheep Bruce Willis, his ex Demi Moore and her ex (and Bruce’s fishing buddy) Ashton Kutcher have come to, whereby they stay friends and the children avoid becoming conflicted is not usual, either in Hollywood or the world at large, but it is typical Sheep behaviour.

Conversely, the value of caution and conservatism is often clear in Sheep relationships. The most obvious of these is with the extrovert, spontaneous Horse whose sidekick the Sheep often ends up being. With the Sheep beside him, the Horse’s fun may be a little less riotous but he will also stay out of serious trouble. The young Horse and Sheep of 1978 and 1979 for instance, are often a tag team who go out drinking and clubbing together. The Sheep may stand back in amazement at the Horse’s daring but  she  is there both to pick up the pieces and to take advantage when these risks bear fruit. The Horse dances on tables, the Sheep buys the drinks. This of course illustrates a psychological truth about the Sheep: the risk-taking they shy away from is exactly what attracts them most. What often follows also is that a desirable partner, on the rebound from a Horse, finds a steadier proposition in the Sheep. In this light consider the relationship between Horse David Cameron and Sheep Nick Clegg. Poodle or what? And how about 1967 Sheep Alex Salmond? Improbably he may end the year propping up another unelected Tory administration.  As I told you, the Sheep likes togetherness. Incidentally in this year of obfuscation and deal-cutting,  don’t for similar reasons,  expect whistle-blower Tom Watson (also born 1967) to receive a great deal of attention. And while we’re on the subject, a student of parliamentary history would be well advised to study the reasons behind the fracture of a national government during  the Sheep year of 1931.

Anyway, placed as the Sheep is between the Horse and the Monkey in the Chinese Zodiac, you understand  the tricky Monkey. There is generally a certain mutual wariness but this unorthodox team is capable of magic.

The Sheep also affiliates easily  with the Pig and the Rabbit. This is a very domestic alliance. The Chinese ideograph for home is a Pig under a roof and the average Rabbit would happily stay home 24/7 if allowed to. The Rabbit is the diplomat and mixer while the Pig who is inherently versatile, takes up the slack of whatever jobs there are to perform. The Sheep makes things safe. She will have ensured for instance that there are no mutually sworn enemies on the guest list. The typical Sheep is an ideal social secretary as well as a master resolver of conflict. Psycho-therapy is among the appropriate career paths.

The Sheep is passionate, representing the yin or feminine side of sexuality, but whether male or female, he is more seducer than chatter up.

Perhaps most interestingly, the Sheep forms a team with the Dog, the Dragon and the Ox, of whom the Dragon is indispensable as you will learn this year. Individually each of these three is somewhat intimidating to her but when this group gathers, the Sheep’s unique gifts become essential:  drawing flexibility from the Dog, humility from the Dragon and cheerful co-operation from the autocratic Ox. Above all she ensures peace among them. Even if all she does is make the coffee, the Sheep is a comforter of the insecure. She understands that most barkers never bite and that aggression is simply inverted fear. When in doubt, join.

Sheep in Wood Sheep Year.

Stars include: yeung yan.

You’re going to be under pressure this year. This may suit you. Possibly not. But there it is. Your role is central to bringing the year  to a happy ending. And for “under pressure” read “offered opportunity.” There is as Shakespeare wrote, “a tide in the affairs of men which taken at the flood, leads onto greatness.” And this is your year isn’t it?

Well, yes and no. Some Animals suffer the self-curse; so a Horse for instance (Angela Merkel, David Cameron, Lloyd Blankfein) comes under considerable pressure in its own year. It’s similar for Pigs in a Pig year as well as Roosters and indeed Dragons in their own year. It’s not like that for Sheep . You guys are mutually  supportive but this support is often itself a demanding thing. The Sheep is family oriented. In a Sheep year family issues are rampant; you are called upon constantly for support; moral, physical financial, other. So it’s probably good to know that your resources are also at their highest. The calls may come from anywhere – your children, other peoples’ children, groups, affiliates, the lost, the hurting, the uncared-for, distant relations, animals, the world. Your heart goes out to them; you are after all a Sheep, the most compassionate, the most idealistic of the Chinese Zodiac. Some talk about making a difference; you do it every day. Doubled up this year. You can’t help yourself. You may – like Jimmy Stewart in It’s a Wonderful Life – win nothing but friends with your kindness but that may sound like a reasonable deal.

The point is that endemic to the Sheep year is the so-called Bullying Curse. This can be just what it sounds like: the Sheep, the Ox and the Dog slug it out and the weakest falls away. When I see this in a ba zi, I have my antennae out for (often justified) resentment; when these three Animals coincide, someone is inevitably left behind. In a Sheep year, all you need is an Ox day in a Dog month or vice-versa and the dynamic is there for pretty much anyone at one time or another. If like you, there’s a Sheep in your Four Pillars, the effect may be deeper and more protracted. You may find yourself ganged up on, especially by family members whose bond with you appears to give them a free ticket. This could be a constant this year. Take it in context with what I wrote above. Big heart; big challenges.

The Bullying Curse is actually, as any half-decent psychologist would be able to tell you, unrequited frustration. A child brought up in this atmosphere, a Sheep say parked between a Dog and an Ox, will suffer the fallout of the parents’ mutual disappointment, a disappointment that is simply a failure to seize the day. These things hurt. And if you know this, you no longer need to be run by it. You can give instead.  As Joe Gandolfo used to say: “Ideas are a dime a dozen but those who put them into practice are beyond price.”

So er…enter the Dragon; the Dragon is the sorcerer, the elemental of thunder who turns inevitable disaster into triumph. Dog, Ox and Sheep equals Bullying Punishment, equals unfulfilled plan. Dog, Ox, Sheep and Dragon make up the Four Earths, all ducks are in a row; great success. Seek the Dragon. In feng shui terms this means face or operate South East. In terms of time it means favour the Dragon day (every twelfth day), the Dragon hour (7-9am) and month (April) but also actual Dragons, (ie those born with Dragons in their Four Pillars). You’ll be interested to know for instance that UKIP’s Nigel Farage is a 1964 Wood Dragon. All major political parties (there will be five or six this year) need to appreciate this and apply it in whatever way they can live with.

So expect chaos this year to which you bring order. Generally this will be by way of your gift of selfless cooperation.  Ecological and health disasters as well as domestic concerns swamp your in-tray. In-laws and dependants summon you while activism beckons. Nobody appears  self-sufficient. You’re going to be busy. Surrender to the rhythm; it’ll be worth it.

A warning: as I wrote last year,  power broadly arises with Fire as apathy does with Earth. The Wood Horse year was among the fieriest but a Wood Sheep tempts with warmth rather than passion. Choose bravely. We’ll all be in your debt. Check out maybe The Hope by Andrew Harvey, perhaps the  most important thinker now living. And yes he’s a (1952 Water) Dragon. But then so is Vladimir Putin. Which kind of shows you what’s happening.

You know those moments when the choice to move forward or stay safe hangs in the balance?  Often at such times we choose illness or other forms of distraction instead. That’s how it will feel to be a Sheep this year. Similar for Ox and Dog btw. Step up, step forward, seek the Dragon.

Health: be kind to yourself. Any diet or fitness regime should be maintained within your lifestyle.

Money: assets may be drawn upon but team work  replenishes.

Relationship: family is the keynote. Commit, maintain.

Feng Shui: South East1 ESE) holds the Dragon,. Add sentimental Water regularly.

Readers’ Digest Version: step up, step out, step forward in cooperation.

Animal Forecast 2015: 7. Neigh Sayer, outlook for the Horse in 2015

February 13, 2015

Who is a Horse?

Years:  1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014.
Month*:  June
Hour: 11:00 am – 01:00 pm
Day: ask us
* Caution: the start of the Chinese month can be as early as the 4th & as late as the 9th, depending on the year. I can let you know this too.

What is a Horse?
The horse is yang fire: the charmer, the extrovert, the seducer of the Zodiac, the Horse is rarely caught however high-risk his strategy. She has an ego of course but is better able to laugh at himself than for instance the Dragon. Like the Dragon, the Pig and the Rooster though, she is often not inclined to work with her own kind. The typical Horse is not a deep thinker and ego leads him to suppose that no one else is either.

There tends to be a belief in shortage, at work in the Horse. You may imagine that you must be first to the trough if you are to eat. In romance the Horse, like the Rooster, can be what Leonard Cohen calls “a thin gypsy thief”. This means his weakness can be a failure to respect boundaries and property. Of all the animals, the Horse and Rooster are typically the marriage breakers and the home wreckers. This is not inevitable of course. If we know this about ourselves we can make wiser choices. Just because today is a good day to die, it is not necessarily a good day to kill.

Predictably the Horse is often not great at commitment. The yin and yang of this by the way is that a self-aware Horse is the most constant partner there is.

Success matters a great deal to the Horse. He is not generally subtle. It is the winning not the taking part that tends to concern you.
Obviously enough the fiery Horse is not keen on water. He experiences this element, whether expressed as a Rat year or as excessive communication, as dampening his enthusiasm. Water slows him down but does not halt him. This tends to make the Water months – November to January – turbulent in all sorts of senses including the meteorological.

Interestingly the Horse’s charisma is best expressed either in a team with the other Plum Flowers, Rat, Rabbit and Rooster or with the Sheep. You will often find Sheep and Horse out and about together, the Horse radiating charm and the Sheep reflecting it. This actually is a good partnership; the Sheep is in awe of the sheer daring of the Horse and the reckless Horse may often need grounding, safety and a short term loan.

The Horse’s home team, all of whom have fire in common, is with the Tiger and the Dog. These are the hunters of the Zodiac: the Tiger kills, the Horse chases, the Dog guards. This support system is the most likely to bring the Horse rewards. On his own he is prone to burn brightly and extinguish early. You’ll have a good time though.

The Horse can find the Ox hard work also. There is metal hidden in the Ox which the Horse can turn to his advantage but the Ox’s preferences are so humdrum.

The Horse has visual, imaginative and intellectual gifts but is unlikely to value them enough to put them to good use. Many of the words we use about the virtue of work illustrate the unwillingness of the Horse to stick at things: harness, yoke, saddle, blinker etc. Again the yin and yang is that a conscious Horse never quits.

A Horse who works with a Snake may achieve greatness because the Snake understands the Horse just as she understands the Dragon, additionally the Snake will not need to compete. In many ways the Snake is the perfect partner but it is more likely the Snake will recognise this than the Horse. The Snake suffers in the short term and the Horse in the long.

Racing, partying, playing, the danger for the Horse is burnout. The challenge is to defer gratification long enough that there remains a future.

Horse in Wood Sheep Year

Stars include: sap gon luk, loy hong.

So your year is over. Except it may not have felt like your year at all. Because of the so-called self clash the typical Horse will have felt quite challenged. And your natural spontaneity may now seem, looking back, more gesture  than action.  The demanding year of 1954 Horse Angela Merkel could be typical;  Germany started 2014 looking like the defender of the European Union and ended it perhaps as one of the reasons that union is threatened with fracture. 1966 Fire Horse David Cameron started the year as an alternative to the knee-jerk xenophobia of UKIP and ends looking liking a reason to vote outside the Westminster establishment at all costs. It is the nature of a year of revelation like that just passed, that  illumination falls upon the Horse. And not necessarily in a good way. You have felt constantly exposed and you’ve had enough of that for the time being, I expect.

At home you may have felt lonely or abandoned and at work, out on a limb. Past mistakes may have been raked up. That’s embarrassing to anybody and it’s an especially brave Horse who looks upon error easily. You’re wise and decent and likely to be available 24-7 to dispense loving advice but receiving it? Not so much. You’ve shifted your schedule time after time to give help but often been too busy to let yourself be helped. So often, advice sounds like condemnation and assistance seems to mean you’re helpless. And for you “helpless” probably carries additional meanings of “useless” and “worthless”.  And to be fair, reflection reflects the reflecter; some of that advice may indeed have amounted to sabotage.

You are however the secret friend of the Sheep. This means you are favoured.  A rest may be in order; certainly some relief from pressure and the Sheep may offer it. Your ambitions are better served by delegation than solo  work but what you choose to concentrate upon this year will shine. That is sap gon luk, the star of success through good preparation. Chuck Spezzano used to say that “bonding is effortless success”;  not “implies” or “entails”, “is”.

On the other hand the loy hong star that rests over you this year threatens that you could over-reach yourself. The Horse is not generally great at commitment. You’re more immediate than that – often to your loss. You’re better at easy-going, relatively shallow relationship. This year if you are spoken-for, be careful how easy-going you get and with whom. Not that you are in danger of discovery. Your partner may never know. But you will. Such small deceits are scars upon the soul.

Of your soul-mates, the Dog will be in need of assistance. A Sheep year for the Dog is a “break-up”; some sort of parting of the ways is on the cards. And the Dog more than likely turns to you.  The Sheep whose loyalty characterises the year, may need a reminder as to why he bothers.  These entreaties will tend to fall in the middle of the year. Later on there is serious discouragement for the Horse who claims they never really cared. You have to care. And of course you do; underneath the top two layers of that neapolitan of sensitivities is a huge, empathetic heart.

If you followed that heart last year, opportunities will be opening up about now. February holds a boost to your energy and June. But you’ll have to commit to whatever it is that beckons. Think about it; if you don’t it’s bound to fail. Only if you do throw yourself into it – work, relationship, that huge new opportunity that you have almost talked yourself out of – will you ever know what could be.

So the key to this year is opening up. There are many – family, friends, those you’ve never met – who are desperate to know you better. These people recognise your nerve and your originality and your heart but feel they hardly know you. If you are known, you’ll be found out, won’t you? They will have some sort of power over you, won’t they? Oops. They’ll know you’re fallible and they’ll be able to exploit your weaknesses. We can’t have that canwe?

This year, the South where the Horse lives, is visited by the tricky Red 7 Star. The 7 is the star of intervention. Not such a bad idea but it’s also the Star of interruption and interference. Who’s to say which is which? This year you have to risk interference, and interruption and open up to intervention if you yearn for intimacy. And from then on you’re neither lonely nor put-upon. If you rise to the call, you enter 2016 equipped for the worldwide dramas that threaten. Otherwise you get a rest.

Health: possible weight gain. Care of eyes, skin, lungs still advised.

Money: activate, occupy, face, favour NE3 the Tiger for reputation, E2 the Rabbit for abundance.

Relationship: the toe far due East at the Rabbit ensures plenty of variety if that’s your choice.

Feng Shui: activate the Dog at NW1 (WNW) for the Moon; that is proportion. You may need it.

Readers’ Digest Version: at least restful, recuperative. At best refuelling.

Animal Forecast 2015: 6. Serpent Uncertainty, outlook for the Snake in 2015

February 12, 2015

Who is a Snake?

Years:  1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001.
Month*:  May
Hour: 09:00 am – 11.00am
Day: ask us

* Caution: the start of the Chinese month can be as early as the 4th & as late as the 9th, depending on the year. I can let you know this too.

What is a Snake?
The balanced or mature Snake has absolute integrity; this is the goal to strive for.

Snake is yin fire and sits flanked by Horse and the Dragon, possibly the most powerful pair of animals in the Zodiac and certainly among the most difficult stools to fall between. So a typical weakness of the Snake is indecision. Next to that is lack of commitment and finally a propensity for sudden and uncharacteristic dishonesty. The Snake is the prisoner who breaks at the threat of torture; a reasonable decision if you know you’re going to give in anyway. Snakes being of Candle Flame fire, are easily discouraged and sometimes they should be. A Snake may even stick long term with an inappropriate choice so as to put off making any choice at all.

The most written about Snake in 2014 was probably Xi Jinping, born in Snake in the Grass year 1953 and appointed at a time when the internal tensions in China – between efficiency and self-expression, between industrial wealth and rural poverty and between cohesion and corruption – have never been so stark. Repetitive tasks for cheap labour have been travelling East from Europe since the 18th century. Once the last few hundred million Chinese have been urbanised, there’s nowhere else for manufacture to go because growth can’t go on forever. This is the conundrum that faces Xi. The smartest and bravest Snakes confront it head on, the typical Snake pretends there’s no issue and proceeds to “reform”. Do not deceive yourself that the Chinese authorities are no longer imprisoning the innocent without trial or protecting those of the corrupt who can be discreet.

Nonetheless the Snake remains the seeker after truth. This can mean that an immature or unbalanced one is a purveyor of pork pies. The balanced or mature Snake, as I said,  has absolute integrity. But meanwhile what you see may not be what you get. Taking into account the Umbrella sit-ins in Hong Kong and a push-me-pull-you approach to liberal reforms, you might well say that about Mr Xi. Compare perhaps with triple 1953 Snake (year, month, day) Tony Blair.

So the choice for the Snake is between opposites: the extroversion of the Horse and the subtlety of the Dragon, instinct and logic, process and end product, long and short term, relationship and freedom, employment or entrepreneurship. In the face of this dilemma, a balanced Snake will often develop sufficient charm to get through without having to make the hard decisions. Typically in a relationship, the Snake of either gender is not the decision maker and the decisions she has not made may include that of being committed to the relationship. The partner of the Snake (best choice probably Ox or Rooster though Monkey lady and Snake man works well) would be well-advised to drag at least this minimum communication from the Snake early on. Interestingly the water Snake of 1953 is one of the best makers and keepers of relationship of all 60 pillars.

One of the advantages of being between the autocratic Dragon and the unruly Horse is that the Snake has her ego in check. Many would consider her wise because what she has to say is well-considered and she never says too much. The Snake can be a brilliant collaborator, especially with the Ox and the Rooster who are in a sense similar to her two neighbours: the Rooster is blatant and the Ox determined while the Snake anchors them to each other. There may be moments of doubt when the Snake’s loyalty wavers. At such times, the Snake asks searching questions which should have been settled long ago and then usually re-commits. The high minded Brutus was probably a Snake. Not Judas though. To know this, grants the Snake both power and integrity. Snakes who know themselves earn undying trust.

The Snake can also work with the Dragon in what is called the House of Magic. Only the Snake can subordinate ego to the extent that the Dragon demands, while also keeping up. One ideal vocation for a Snake is high-level p.a. Usually (and wisely) the Snake opts for the role of No 2 rather than Big Chief.

Being substantially of yin fire, the Snake often has intellectual and visual gifts. She makes a good critic as her judgement is good and she is not out to destroy egos. She will generally have natural and effortless style.
The Snake’s relationship with the Monkey is of the love-hate variety. Both have hands-on and logical ability and both attract the occasional tussle but where the Monkey welcomes the opportunity for mischief, the Snake treats dispute as a necessary and regrettable evil. When a Tiger appears either in the form of a Tiger-born person or a Tiger year like 2010, this misunderstanding can turn nasty. In a Sheep year, however, the issues are very different.

The Snake is opposed to the Pig and as both of these are members of the informal group sometimes called the Four Terminals, they can impede each other’s movement. Snakes may develop mobility issues in a Pig year (or month) and vice versa.
The Snake prefers a short menu and yes/no questions. In a Rat year the Snake may be overwhelmed; there is just too much choice, The Snake’s dreams may come true only for her to run in the opposite direction. Often communication has to be wrenched from the Snake and in the water years of Rat and Pig there is little support for the tight-lipped. In a typical Ox year there is just enough water but not too much. This makes scope for just the restricted level of communication the Snake prefers.

Snakes have a complex relationship with fire. They are not usually sun-worshippers but often their skin needs just a little regular sun and without it they may fall prey to easily avoided ailments such as vitamin D deficiency. A Wood Sheep year offers less fire than the Horse. You’ll have to seek it out. Now read on.

Snake in Wood Sheep Year.

Stars include: yik ma, yeung yan.

You’re restless.

Traditionally the Sheep year is a stretch for the Snake; in fashion the Snake struggles to keep up to date, in politics, old mistakes return to incriminate. Domestically the Snake learns that (s)he has a great deal to learn. This year the Snake has to step up in order to hang onto what (s)he values most highly. A good deal of change may be called for.  You may be called upon to actually make that move you’ve been resisting; that’s what the yik ma star signifies.

2014 will have been helter-skelter; you simply had to tack into wind or sink. But 2015 is the year of gathering; what you will gather yourself will principally be the reward or fallout from 2014.  There is something very simple about this. It’s kind of black-and-white. The Snake however is multi-coloured. To you there may well be something suspect about simplicity. When Tony Blair claimed to be “a pretty straight kind of guy,” he simply (and perhaps even honestly) did not know what he was talking about. His was the Snake’s eye view. Having mutually contradictory explanations for diametrically opposed views held simultaneously is no one else’s idea of straight. You’re a Snake too.

It’s a 3 year which favours a man’s aspirations unlike last year which honoured those of the female. The qualities called for are robust and unsubtle; not so much the Snake’s cup of tea. This year the simple truth rules. But your view that there’s generally something underneath whatever is presented  is not a foolish one. 2015 promises to be the year in which major concerns about freedoms and fairness are swept back under the carpet and your enquiring, nay suspicious  nature is an important counterpoint. Keep asking questions. Be dissatisfied with the answers just as long as you are dissatisfied with the answers. The Sheep year is a vintage year for the suspicious.

And the Snake is above all the seeker after truth. In 2015 the powers-that-be are shameless and they need robust questioning. Whether it’s about desecrating the Earth – 2015 is the year of fracking and shale-exploitation  –  or setting us upon each other to shift focus from their own shenanigans, this year authority needs questioning. Truth needs to be told to power like never before. And the Snake is the one to do it.

The Horse year of 2014 may have found you spoilt for choice. Among other things the Horse is your Peach Blossom and may have brought you romance. Now you have to turn that into something more lasting but you may have to move – in a variety of senses, including the geographical. This may be the first time you have been called to risk everything. And amid all this you may find yourself not  only  moving house but job and possibly country too. So much earlier than you planned.

Health: possible weight gain. Thyroid.  Accidents are possible; the conventional prophylaxis is to have your teeth professionally cleaned and/or donate blood.

Money: not the main issue.

Relationship: steady if you are.

Feng Shui: seek and activate or occupy  the Dragon at SE1 (ESE).

Readers’ Digest Version: simultaneously disorienting, grounding and full of promise
