The Pig recovers,

The Ox is still in charge,
The Tiger grounds her prey,
The timid Rabbit hesitates,

This month’s lo shu: wu huang 5 South West ; san sha North

The Alarm goes off: Earth Tiger Month, 2020.
What to expect, what to do.

In the UK more people turn in sick on the first Monday in February than any other day. That’s some start to a year.

This February’s Earth Tiger favours Horse, Dog, Pig and the Tiger itself. Tiger is fierce and patient and possesses great vision, they never forget – a grudge , a slight or a defeat. On the other hand they may also recall a kindness. This is the door by which we enter what is often reckoned the saddest month of the year as well as how we might approach the most obdurate Tigers (born 1950, 62, 74, 86, 98).

As you might expect, the above four Animals should find the ball on the penalty spot today. The fiery Horse, Tiger and Dog may well actually kick it too. These Animals can usefully seek attention at this time. The Pig too, though you may still be recovering; the so-called “self-clash” may have made 2019 wearying. Time to get back on the pitch just the same.

Fact is that now is the time to stir, whatever your ba zi. Human beings are engineered to hide from the cold until the buds start to rise with the marginally longer days of February. But re-emerge we must. This is true even for the fun-loving Monkey and Snake whose Metal may be rusted from the long Winter; seek stability, warmth and a gentle re-birth. You may have to be serious a while.

The Rat is literally in his element all year and the months will tend to pass without much change to that. Ox too – by an Elemental quirk, the Ox rules Rat times such as the duration of this year. You Oxen can bank on the whip hand returning to you time and again. Others: stand back.

Outliers include the Rabbit who is likely to do fine but may fail to appreciate. Gratitude is your watchword. Rooster too – you are called to communicate more deeply than ever; those words you have been thinking but not given voice, they’re going to be aired very soon. Make sure that is you bringing them to light by speaking sooner rather than later. This is, I emphasise, the month of emergence.

The Sheep seeks a solace in the warm, a place at the table. You may not find it before March however.  Dragon – you are a law under yourself. Act accordingly and stop pretending you’re not.

And as ever let’s remember that no astrological analysis can never do any one of us full justice and the above words are pretty skimpy in any case. If you want more you know where to come.
Richard Ashworth 2020

Where to be in February.
Summary: regain direction in the North West.
North West, Authority: Year Star: 8 Month Star: 9
The North West houses genuine leadership and 8 hosting 9 is as helpful as it gets. If we are rejecting home offices and capital cities, this is where we go instead. For clear direction this year seek the North Western path where the Rebel Alliance is gathering. And there’s prosperity here meanwhile.
Enhance for wealth and success: Fire – bright light.

Where not to be in February.
Summary: fraught.
South West, Accumulation: Year Star: 4 Month Star:5.
The 5 shuts this, the place of the Mother and on some readings, relationships, down for a while. 5 hindering the 4 suggests ailments and fragility for women of all ages. Facing this way is fine but avoid the location itself if you can for now.
Mitigate: t’ang lung and/or Metal eg 6 Pipe Metal windchime.

Fire Rat

This month’s lo shu: wu huang 5 South ; san sha South

Winter is here: the Fire Rat Month, 2019.
Look to my coming at first light.”  Gandalf. The Two Towers. JRR Tolkien.

Rat Month favours communication. Around this time of year, while it’s dark and cold, we pause awhile. We gather and share our experience of the Year and rest up. Human beings are essentially programmed to overeat, huddle together and catch up now until the thaw of February.

When a Rat Month opens into a Rat Year however, the invitation is to a much longer conversation. This month plumbs the depths not only of this year’s Winter but the Winter of the Great Year or tai sui. The Great Year lasts twelve years and the Rat is in effect one month of that Great Year. We are now fast within a prolonged period of cold and damp. There’s time to think about where we have been and where we are going.

And we are fast into a time of world uncertainty which may be reflected in our homes, our workplaces and elsewhere. As ice caps melt, many of the foundations of our way of life are under threat. In China, Yemen, sub-Saharan Africa, Myanmar and Kashmir as well as in Westminster and Washington we are at the mercy of poor choices both of lifestyle and ruler. Time to re-consider perhaps. Now’s the time.

Water of course also represents the emotions, that other mute mode of communication. The deepest Water speaks not only of physical damp but of deep feeling. All Water is forever seeking all other Water just as the most profound feelings are always seeking expression. We share our feelings in order to connect, to make sense of them and in some cases to relieve them. That’s why we huddle together in mid-Winter.

The tai sui lasts twelve years; this deep cold has been a dozen years in coming, the spring remains more than a year away.

Whether we are talking globally, politically, at home or at work, at our desks or our dinner tables, now is an opportunity to consider where we go next. There are hints as to when and where to do what in this missive but your personal response is just that: personal. We get the leaders we deserve and the times we deserve. So when we are dissatisfied with them we are well advised to look within. Spring follows Winter just as Dawn follows night.
Richard Ashworth December 2019

Where to be in December.
Summary: result!
East, Ambition: Year Star: 6 Month Star: 8.
Stars 6 and 8 combine authority and wealth. Expertise and practice pay off. Work and practice here for property gains and notoriety. Additional Water constitutes a 1 thus making an abundant 168. Younger son may inherit. Settling here encourages the eccentric – no harm in that. If you have a door here, enter by it as often as you can.
Assist: Water: blue/black and/or a bowl changed daily.

Where not to be in December.
Summary: potentially embarrassing
South, Bright Future: Year Star: 3 Dragon Virtue Month Star: 5. Month san sha The vigorous 3 is briefly blighted by the 5 Star. Facing the 5 ie facing South may embolden but occupying the South carries the risk of embarrassing cash flow issues. The Fire here may shine unwelcome light. Not much help here till January. Possible digestive issues too – there’s a surprise!
AnchorMitigate: Metal: but don’t overdo it. Music box the most effective counter.

The Mute Cry for Help: the Wood Pig Month, 2019.

There are only two communications: love and the cry for help.”
Dr. Chuck Spezzano.

Pig Month, Pig Year, double Pig. We approach peak porker. Whatever your year has been like to date it’s about to be more so. If you’re a Rabbit, Sheep or Tiger that might sound pretty good; whether that’s the Animal that rules your Year, Month, Day or Hour, you have to a greater or lesser extent been in pole position all year. Fill your boots.

To the average Snake or Monkey however the prospect is of further frustration; to the Dog more gip sat; that is to say opposition and robbery. And to the Pig him or herself, who may have seen every two steps forward followed by one backwards in 2019, pretty daunting. Traditionally Pigs don’t rub along too well with other Pigs. That’s called the “Self Clash” and it’s uncomfortable. The Chinese character for “home” is a Pig under a roof; just the one. In short the Pig Year is unlikely to be a Pig’s best year, Pig Month just piles it on.

What’s to be done about this? Not only for the above unfortunates but also those Oxen & Roosters whose plans may have not entirely fallen into place either? Again if your Year, Month, Day or Hour fall to these or the Pig, you may resonate.

The Pig is yin Water. And Water is communication; not represents, symbolises or stands for; Water is communication. Brooks babble and oceans roar and we are all 80%+ Water; the human being is a communicating creature. We are if you like, all pools in the same sea. And all Water is in downward pursuit of all other Water at any given time; Water above our heads – loft tanks and aqueducts as much as pregnant storm clouds – are inherently awkward. We suspect them because we know what the Water wants to do: to travel downwards as long as there is a down to travel to.

So it’s about communication this double Pig month; it brings an opportunity to disclose. Self-disclosure of course is the route to intimacy; when we share our profoundest fears we are to an extent relieved of them. Which is a healing process but often not an easy one. Many of us are programmed to mistrust vulnerability. Pigs more than most.

As I say, the Pig is yin Water and where yang is great, yin is small; where yang is rapid, yin is more stately; where yang is effusive, yin is more reserved. So where the inherently Yang Water Rat is often an effortless communicator, the Pig may have to learn to speak out. Unsurprisingly Pigs are sometimes not so good at asking for help.

Which means this month offers a big opportunity to listen. The solution to the Dragon’s characteristic angst has always been to heal and teach, to put the attention outwards. But in this lies the month’s prescription for us all. Within this missive you have some sort of guide but I’m suggesting something further: this month is the one to be aware of the cries for help. Some may be mute and some insistent, some near and some far. But let’s listen. It’s quite possibly not about you.
Richard Ashworth 2019

Where to be in November.
Summary: get your attention out. It may not be about you.
East, Ambition: Year Star: 6 Month Star: 9.
Stars 6 and 9 jockey for supremacy. Could mean good clean competition (and maybe not clean). Best to keep the East strong with Wood. Turbulent but assertive. Young men (who belong to the East of course) may like this just as it is. Not for boozing or schmoozing but perversely creative.
Assist: Wood: three solid plants.

Where not to be in November.
Summary: unhealthy, hazardous
North East, Wealth: Year Star: 2 Month Star: 5. Wu huang.
2 and 5 Stars connote minor ailments, loss and crisis. When they coincide at the so-called Ghost Gate of the North East, they’re also full of unhelpful surprises. Steer clear. If this is your roost, clear out; just for now, the following months look pretty good.
Mitigate: Add t’ang lung charm. Other than the saltwater cure which is in my experience both hit-and-miss and messy, t’ang lung is the only counter that works

Forecast Day for the Metal Rat Year 2020

October 11, 2019

2020, Who moved my Cheese?

The Watershed Year of the Metal Rat.

All shall be well and all manner of things shall be well.”

Julian of Norwich.

On Saturday December 7th & Sunday December 8th I’ll be forecasting the Metal Rat Year online via Zoom. Very easy to join btw – we just send you a link and you click. No prior knowledge of Chinese metaphysics required.

2020, A Watershed Year.

A Master once said that feng shui is like poker; the trick is to capitalise when the force is with you and play safe when it isn’t. That is as true at home as it is at work, as true domestically as globally; as true in the sphere of relationship as in the sphere of health. And in the demanding year that beckons, especially so.

The saying goes that the only constant is change and during the workshop we will be discussing what changes are coming with the New Chinese New Year. Where should you locate for best advantage? Which Animals are set to prosper, which to consolidate and what is to be done about it? Also what is the likely trend of world events? How do we best respond?

So what’s on the cards?

Metal Rats are watershed years. You might remember 1960 when there was a brand new US President. They say that politics is showbiz for ugly people and all that glamour and youth in the White House was a new thing indeed. 1960 of course ushered in the “Swinging Sixties”, a new age of personal freedoms. Meanwhile Rachel Carson was writing “Silent Spring” the earliest account of the damage we are doing to the planet.

A Metal Rat year is a grinder, a melting pot. The archetype, Harry Harrison’s Stainless Steel Rat is possessed of sharp teeth and tongue, he’s cynical and opportunistic but ultimately on the side of the angels. These qualities pervade the year: much change, some drastic, all of which can add up to gains, given nimble feet. It’s unlikely to be an easy one for the most part but we’ll aim to point you in the right directions to make the best use of it.

We will be looking closely at the fortunes of each Animal; every year brings winners as well as losers: each of your Month, Day and Hour of Birth are ruled by a Zodiac Animal as is your Year, as you know. Dragons are mostly boosted in 2020 for instance but even if your birth was not in 1952, 64, 76, 88 or 2000, it may have been on a Dragon Day, a Dragon Hour or a Dragon Month.

We will look closely at this, so be sure to have all four of your Four Pillars to hand. As each Pillar relates to a different area of your activity, it may well be that a Horse of 1954, 1966 or 1978 say, who might otherwise expect a thin time was born on an Ox day which implies an increase in personal power.

We’ll be looking of course at the fresh patterns of energy; The New Year qi dictates new areas to work and sleep and create. The tai sui (that is the most powerful feng shui energy) will be coming in from due North this time. We won’t be facing that way even if it’s one of our personal best directions; that would be like wilfully facing a tempest. But we will be locating and facing in directions, month by month, where we can expect a following wind.

What else will we learn?

We’ll consider what’s likely to happen where and when; Last year the map indicated trouble in the straits of Hormuz. That was on the button – for which I take no credit; it’s just careful drafting. This year we’ll look again. We’ll see how we are ourselves affected as well as what we can do to help.

We’ll trace the progress of the year by way of the Book of Changes; the Four Hexagrams of the year allow us to track the ebb and flow of the prevailing energy, week by week as it peaks and falls.

We’ll look at the indications of Qi Men Dun Jia, the cutting edge of Chinese divination, for some magical dates that you can employ.

All things are cyclical.

As rain follows sun, so light comes after darkness. Based on the Gan Zi Cycle which has been guiding Chinese Diviners for most of four millennia, I’ve been predicting financial collapse in 2020 for the best part of a decade. Now I’m not even outspoken. We are however additionally facing drastic environmental change as well as multiple extinctions and various forms of tyranny.

But the other side of collapse is renewal. All over the world resistance to careless authority and poor maintenance of the planet is popping up. Again, as I noted a decade ago. You won’t remember the Metal Rats of 1900, 1840, 1720 or 1660 (all of which offer indications) but the reassurance that the Gan Zi Cycle offers is that everything is cyclical. All shall be well and all manner of things shall be well.

We’ll see what we can do, personally, socially, at work and at play to emerge into 2020 with a bright future and a healthier planet. Join us.

Favoured Animals: Tiger, Horse, Dog, Pig.

The Hexagram (above): Tai Increase, Earth over Heaven, Gains.

Who’s in charge?: the Fire Tiger Month, 2019.
An interesting thing about the Pig is that its Elemental make-up is identical to the Dragon. Which makes this in many ways the Dragon’s year. The Dragon’s yin/yang balnce is different however, so  they/he/she will have to time things right. Watch the World’s leading Dragons Nancy Pelosi (Metal) & Marianne Williamson (Water) for pointers. In 2020 they take over. Both women – who’d have thought it?

The Dalai Lama was right: the World will be saved by Western women. Observe the above but watch out for the real playmakers, the Rabbits, Dragons, Snakes, Horse and Sheep of 1987-1999. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez for instance, And Rutger Bergman.

February – the most helpful month for Pigs btw – is when these and indeed most Dragons face pivotal decisions – globally, domestically, romantically, commercially and other. Which could so easily go wrong. If we can own that we get the leaders we deserve (that is on some level we chose them, whatever we tell ourselves) we may have reached peak-Trump (& peak-Brexit). If not, maybe not. There’ll be another fork in the road in early August when the yang Metal of the Monkey Month sparks the last of the Fire season. And at that time, at least for vested interests, the runes do not look helpful. And the coming financial collapse will be obvious by then. Not btw that that is altogether bad news.If it’s not obvious that would be bad news indeed.

Meanwhile in this Fire Tiger month in this Earth Pig year, here’s what you have to look forward to:

Ox: on the back burner and relieved to be there. Quiet time till July. Not the time to gamble. Use your extreme sensitivity er….sensitively.

Tiger: Famously powerful, notoriously variable, Tigers tend to get their own way this month. For better or worse; use that power wisely, Tigers often not so great at active listening.

Rabbit: profitable to both gamble and gambol. It’s a 2nd-in command kind of month.

Dragon: Timing! There is, to coin a phrase, a time for every purpose under Heaven.

Snake: Neither Pig nor Tiger on your side. Simple truth your best guide.

Horse: one of your most supportive times. Run wild, run free,  but perhaps not rampant.

Sheep: loyal cohort of the Pig. Doors start to open for you now. Push.

Monkey: butt of Tiger, adversary of Pig; best keep your head down & mind your own business. Poorly phrased/ timed jokes may backfire. Zip it!

Rooster: confusing; bountiful prey but little agreement from your peers. Manners!

Dog: The most loyal, the most stubborn; the most immovable, the most restless. You choose. Pig is a whole year when you’d do well to be alert. Know who your friends are.

Pig: self-clash. You need space, also compassion. Know the difference between enthusiasm and the gang mentality.

Rat: yang Water in a yin Water year, now confronted with pure yang Wood; under-powered. Best to work within those limitations.

Final note: the above are very simplistic assessments. No astrological analysis, especially such a brisk one will ever do you full justice. You always have choice, you are as a wise man once said to me, the camera not the crisis. Nothing I or anyone else can advise will free you from the necessity to make decisions.

The best way to wring value from these brief prognostications, remains to identify not only your Year Animal but those of Month, Day & Hour. You are  – astrologically speaking – a cocktail of these and it’s as unlikely that all four will be compromised at any given time as it is that they will all be blessed.

Where to be in February.
Summary: turbulent, productive.
East, Determination: Year Star: 6 Month Star: 9.
The ego has landed.  and 6 are a volatile combination. Turbulent but pretty fertile. As the 6 beds in, expect action in the East – of the map, the house and your greater environment – to feature clashes of titans. It’s macho again but contention now is between adult male peers rather than generations. Again this could well be quite productive but it’s not likely to be comfortable or easy to watch. Take special care of feet, head, Eldest Son and Fathers.

Mitigate/Exploit: Earth: rose quartz – large or handful of tumblestones.

Where not to be in February.
Summary: Poor all year.
South West, Accumulation: Year Star:5, Month Star: 8.
The Annual 5 or wu huang makes this the location to avoid all year. A Master (or Mistress) Bedroom here will be asking for troubled affairs of the heart; an office for administrative or HR issues. Briefly: don’t enter locate or face South West if there is an alternative. If your front door is South West, aim to enter another way.
And finally to get the best of it, around six times this year activate the Monkey as part of the Four Point Activation – get the timing right. Otherwise evacuate and keep this area quiet.
Mitigate: t’ang lung.

Girls’ Talk

February 4, 2019

Girls’ Talk.

Sarah was the middle sister of three. Last year her younger sister died. Following this she took a demanding job, commuted to a town she didn’t know and worked herself to exhaustion. I’ve been setting up her home for the fresh energy of this new year of the Earth Pig.

Before I catch my train home – a rare direct connection to Guildford from the double-glazed rat trap that is Birmingham New Street (where there security barriers keeping you back from the security barriers)  – we sit for a couple of minutes in her car. This last 12 months has been break-neck for her. Now she figures she needs to be still and feel the pain she has been running from.

“Girls Talk” by Dave Edmunds selects itself on her car radio.

It was the Queen who said that grief is the price we pay for love. Probably written for her, to be fair, but profound just the same. And it’s only respectful. I tell Sarah about my own sister who died, pregnant and beautiful aged 32, from whatever follows pre-eclampsia. Eclampsia, I guess.

“I don’t think I felt this depth of grief,” I say. “The grief you’re simultaneously feeling and not-feeling.”

She nods.

“You’re the boss, this is your life,” I say, “But it may be about time to open up to it. We have two choices essentially with feelings: distraction or immersion. And since distraction always leads to immersion, it seems to make sense to go there first. Gin & tonic, heroin, nicotine and soap operas, they all just delay the moment.”

“I know,” she says. “I’ve been so busy. That was what I intended, anything rather than entering the grief. When I get home I don’t want to do anything. Sleep and work, that’s it.”

Her career’s going great.

“The human condition seems to consist of lessons tied up in feelings,” I say, “We call them negative emotions because we generally choose not to like them.”

She takes a deep breath; her eyes glisten and she purses her lips.

She feels her sister nearby, she tells me. I look within; it’s like a wisp of dizziness, a wave of vertigo and then gone. There’s such grief in her eyes now.

The most unusual detail of her house is an odd niche in an outside wall to the South East – the place of the Wind, the ultimate yin, “gentle and thorough but ultimately adamant”, as the Book of Changes has it. South East – the place of sisters. When I visit Sarah I’ve always been drawn there.

I’m not so literal – or as brutal – as to see a causal connection here. Feng shui’s not like that – things do not I think, occur because you get the feng shui wrong. Think of what unhelpful silliness that can lead to. I think the metaphors built into a house simply tell a story that we can sometimes decode and work with: a skid into which we may drive. There’s a small fountain here now, embellished with a sad little angel. It’s all a bit too damp and the pump has stopped. But then it’s January.

Bringing Sarah’s home up to date for the New Chinese Year, now pretty much with us, includes identifying the helpful 8 and 9 “Stars” and “activating” them. Bright light is an effective booster, but in some cases inappropriate because of the energy that’s already there. These are reckoned by many to be the abundance Stars btw. Of which I inform you with due caution.

Every part of our houses equates to a certain member of the family, a location within (and without) the building, particular types of activity, a Trigram from the Book of Changes and a thousand thousand other things. The numbers of the “Stars” are tags for a million metaphors.

Next priority is the 5 or Wu Huang “Five Yellow” Star which is reckoned to bring plagues of boils; generally this isn’t literal. The 5 is ambivalent, both Earth and Fire, and although it belongs in the centre of the house, it flies about. This year it’s in the South West. And it’s doubly tricky because the 5 alone of the integers 1 to 9 lacks a corresponding Trigram. It’s not, unlike say the North West which belongs to the Father and Authority, a member of the family. Feng shui enthusiasts who’ve only been taught Western dilutions of classical theory learn that the 5 Star is Bad with a capital Buh. The nonagenarian guys in Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan whose names you’ll never hear, know that the 5 is the power; harnessing it is the Holy Grail.

We agree to tame it with Metal and a t’ang lung charm.

Then I show her this year’s He Tu Journeys. He what Journeys? you might reasonably ask. These journeys make for opportunities to take charge of our space. Each year, each segment of the home houses different Stars (as you may already have worked out) and the ancient He Tu Map defines the connections between them. The 3 Star for instance whose home is in the East but this year has migrated to the South, has affinity with the 8 Star which lives North East but sits at the centre or tai chi this year.

I’m not making this stuff up, honest.

There are four or five daily He Tu Journeys each year. Journey number one for this Earth Pig Year is from the South to the tai chi, bringing light to the heart of things.

I encourage Sarah to take these walks every morning but nothing is lost if a few are missed. Find the beginning location, breathe deeply into it and take that breath to the end location. More powerful if you say, take a tumblestone across the divide, but most powerful when the walker finds their own meaning within it. In that place that we all know to one extent or another, where visualisation meets alpha rhythms, such a recognition moves mountains. We might call it prayer. Prayer consisting of a desperate last minute request may or may not land, prayer that simply identifies and accepts the appropriate cannot miss its mark.

And then we set up a walk from the South to that sad little assembly in the South East, from the Middle Daughter to the Youngest.

She wants to talk awhile before we leave. She says she knows she has locked something away.

“It’ll happen when it’s supposed to happen,” she says.

Ah. Going with the flow. Careful with that. Living is a dynamic process and there’s no limit to the ability of human beings to turn liberating ideas into chains. “Going with the flow” can be one such chain. Sometimes the flow – that is the tao – leads through difficulty, sometimes through opposition. The appropriate path is not always simply a door that’s been left open.

“For myself,” I tell her, “That kind of pain – a broken heart however caused – hangs like a weight until it’s owned. Feeling and not feeling while the mind is constantly engaged trying to solve and explain and reassure. Hurts.  And it’s not much help. The reassurance does not reassure.”

“Sometimes the flow, the Tao, what-have-you demands ingenuity, sometimes a lowering of barriers. Nothing I can do for you will save you from the need to make decisions.”

“I know,” she says.

“Time for a cry,” I say.

“I know that too.”

When I get on the train, the first track that comes on is “I don’t feel amazing” by the Guillemots: “Can’t stop those noises at the door.” She knows that and there’s nothing wrong with her door..

“Just be sure to make those journeys.”

Dog in the Year of the Earth Pig 2019

February 2, 2019

Who is a Dog?

close up photography of adult black and white short coat dog

Years:  1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006.
Month*:  October
Hour: 19.00-21.00

Day: Ask Us

* Caution: the start of the Chinese month can be as early as the 4th & as late as the 9th, depending on the year. I can let you know this too.

What is a Dog?
The Dog is yang earth and a byword for faith and consistency. Terriers and Rotweilers are both fierce as well as loyal. In mediaeval heraldry and Renaissance painting, the greyhound symbolises constancy. The downside of this is that like Donald Trump and two of his three predecessors (ie not Obama – naturally) all 1946 Fire Dogs, they take some moving on.

A Dog can be expected to revere tradition and have a strong family background. If a Dog commits to something they can generally be relied upon to see it to completion – for better or worse. The difference between male and female Dogs can be that the female gets the message quicker. Interesting to note that Kate Middleton and Prince William are twin Water Dogs of 1982; a very solid match because as a yang earth sign, the Dog is pretty immovable, an ideal best friend or protector. These two are first and foremost, good friends.

The Dog’s thinking may not always be flexible but when he gets an idea, he really gets it. His natural grouping is with the hunters, the Horse and Tiger. The apportionment of tasks here is obvious: the Horse provides pace and the Tiger ferocity while the Dog watches the rear. If more people studied Chinese metaphysics, more workplaces would zing: in business the Horse will tend to be the sales person, the Tiger the closer or credit controller and the Dog the provider of after-sales service or er…hr department.

The Dog excels at service because he never gives up. He will return your phone calls and keep that appointment. He’s the friend who sends a card every birthday and the spouse who remembers every anniversary. He’s the Tweeter at dawn.

The Dog perhaps surprisingly, also mixes well with the gentle diplomatic Rabbit. The Rabbit schmoozes while the Dog ensures that her openness is not abused. The Dog makes a wonderful bodyguard and middle manager. A Dog employer will generally have achieved that position by sheer hard work and will demand the same from all around.

The Dog doesn’t like the Dragon because he’s such a smarty pants. Also the Dog hates success without effort and the Dragon creates with such apparent ease. Consider Dragon Vladimir Putin in this regard. The Snake too; she’d resent the Horse as well except that the balanced Dog is scrupulously loyal to her own team. And just as an aside, it’s a principle of yin and yang that opposites co-exist. So some Dogs will express these qualities in the omission rather than the observance. This may make sense of both George W Bush and Donald Trump.

An unbalanced Dog is a bit of a shop steward. He knows his rights and the way things should be – often the way they always have been. An unbalanced Dog (such as one with an October or mid-evening birth) is rigid. Those recent US Presidents in a downward progress of de-evolution bottoming out at Donald Trump, have been champions of stuck, male, white, wealthy privilege.  Make no mistake: it may not be clear very soon but the Fire Dog is over. The smart Fire Dog has already become mentor and confessor, at which pursuits he excels, as is appropriate.

The Dog will often have a strong spiritual agenda and if he has a blind spot it may be an inability to tell the difference between religion and spirituality or spirituality and therapy. Because this means he sticks to his guns, the Dog is suited both to new age therapy and religious persecution. He will not be thrown off by the opinions of others once he has committed to a line of action. In fact the unbalanced Dog can be thick skinned in matters of belief; this Dog would be ideally suited to being a Grand Inquisitor. The problem is that their motto ought to be “Do as you would be done by,” and he thinks it already is.

The Dog can work well with other Dogs and with the Pig. With the Pig he shares a love of home and team and they are so different they don’t crowd each other. Sometimes the Dog and Pig can be telepathically close; this is because they are adjacent signs in the calendar linked by the yang earth that is a feature of both. Sometimes this earth is expressed by banter or earthy humour, sometimes by complimentary delusions; consider Trump and Earth Pig born-again misogynist Mike Pence. They can have a lot of fun together while getting the job done. Or not.

But the most powerful and most demanding role the Dog can play is in a creative team including the irritating Dragon, the autocratic Ox and the soft Sheep. If the Dog acts as conscience and bookkeeper, the Ox will relax, the Sheep toughen up and the Dragon acknowledge someone else for a change. If you are a Dog recruiting for non-executive directors take note. What is great about the Dog is that if he finds advice that works he will adopt it as if it were religion. Bless.

The Dog in 2019

Every Dog has his day and you’ve had a whole year. 2018 was the doggiest dog ever.

The Dog’s reputation has been tarnished by the behavior of 1946 Fire Dog Donald Trump, 1958 Earth Dogs Betsy DeVos and Michael Flynn, and 1970 Metal Dogs Melania Trump, Paul Ryan and Ted Cruz. Sarah Huckabee Sanders is the 1982 Water Dog, so she is the communicator for the pack.

Barron Trump was born in a Fire Dog year. Take that not as judgment about him, but as an elegant metaphor demonstrating why some masters say a BaZi is like DNA. I have even used BaZi for genealogical research in my practice.

For all of 2018 Dogs have been in the spotlight, swamped with competition that they deemed irrelevant, except – how’s your stomach been this year? Gut issues?

I wish I could say that’s over now, but in 2019 you’ll have to carry on a few more months even though you’re no longer in charge. January and July and April will be the most demanding months of the year.

In February your associate the Tiger is helpful, even if the Pig distracts him. In March, your best friend the Rabbit is hitching her wagon to the Pig’s star too. It may be lonely, but take advantage of these months where you get a short surge of energy.

An in-your-face challenge will bring new insights about the meaning of protection and boundaries in April. It’s time to find some new pack members. You value loyalty; maybe too much. When everyone around you is in the same state of mind, It’s difficult to make the changes you want.

In May, the support you thought was solid has turned out to be unreliable or blocked. This might be the theme of the Pig year for you. Redefine yourself to stay relevant. You’ve got until 2022 to prepare for your next iteration. Use the time well.

Sometime mid-year you’ll find the possibility of a new romance or some unexpected financial gains. Your best support will come in June, however, there’s a danger that you’ll be explosive then, too.

If the Dog depends too much on control, which is just an idea, in the second half of the year she’ll experience greater losses. This might be a lesson about the heaviness of your hand and how you have relied on that to get what you wanted.

Seek the Rabbit to take you in and help you get patched up. If it’s your style, and the wood element is helpful for you, carry or wear a Tiger or a Rabbit amulet. Get in touch if you’re curious about that.

We’re at the end of a predatory era. You might want to consider that your strengths have turned into your weaknesses, and vice versa. The value comes in acknowledging it. You’re not a victim, but you could use your ideas about guarding and safety to help others out of that box. Time to go back to herding and protecting. Gather up the lost, pull people out of danger, carry supplies, bring a message.

Rooster in the Year of the Earth Pig 2019

February 1, 2019

Who is a Rooster?

two brown hen and one red rooster

Years:  1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005.
Month*:  September
Hour: 17.00-19.00

Day: Ask Us
* Caution: the start of the Chinese month can be as early as the 4th & as late as the 9th, depending on the year. I can let you know this too.

 What is a Rooster?

The Rooster is yin metal, the night bird, glamorous and with an eye for detail. She appreciates an argument and likes to win but has little patience for causes that drag on. She will appreciate jewellery, fine art and good living and create wealth easily. Conversely of course a wide-awake Rooster like Aung San Suu Kyi can reject such distractions in order to serve a cause that has indeed dragged on for decades. And like Aung San Suu Kyi can suddenly and mysteriously change their mind. This is yin and yang.

The rule this illustrates by violating is that a typical Rooster is suited to work that involves short decisive arguments such as that of an advocate. Her brief passion is the perfect support for a client. She can defend with enormous commitment and then move on to the next one. That commitment is 100% but it is short lived. If she is in a job that involves holding her peace she may fret and become ill.

Osama bin Laden may be a good example of a typical 1957 fire Rooster: one big splash and he was off. A car must be fast, a partner challenging and life full of twists and turns. The Rooster is likely to be quick witted rather than profound and his attention span is short.

Her allies the Snake and the Ox are sometimes impatient with her because she can digress so widely and so easily but she brings to the metal alliance the pure competitiveness that the Ox might otherwise misuse and the Snake misunderstand. She is pure metal – that is determined to prevail at all costs – and they are not. They will not win many cases or many contracts without her and they would do well to pay and respect her appropriately despite the fact that she needs longer holidays and a better remuneration package.  Conversely if she fails to respect a support system that dots t’s and attends to punctuation and provides the intuitive flashes that the Rooster can exploit but seldom generates, she will not prosper.

Your pitfalls are sex drugs and rock’n’roll. You probably like to party and your personality may be addictive. You are likely to prefer dusk to dawn and also to the small hours.
The Rooster enjoys a powerful alliance with the Dragon in which they, uniquely in the average Dragon’s experience, may hold the whip hand. This is not always entirely healthy. They can bend the Dragon out of shape just as the Ox can bend the Rat. This sway must be employed responsibly otherwise both can be damaged. With that proviso this is one of the strongest alliances in the Chinese zodiac.

The Rooster predictably is one of the charismatic Flowers of Romance. Success and glamorous partners come easily to her. Often a Rooster can punch above her weight in this regard. Cinderella was a Rooster and Yoko Ono. This effortlessness can make for complaisancy, and bitterness is more common among middle-aged Roosters than any other animal. Growing old is hard for the Rooster who is often compared to Snow White’s stepmother. Who is the fairest of us all? Consider these aspects in the contrasting lives of Mick Jagger and Che Guevara both of whom were born – in different years – on the day of the Wood Rooster.

With the Monkey the wily, numerate Rooster can form a commercial alliance. A business co-run by these two will be irresistibly attractive but may not open on time. It may not close promptly either and may also suffer the cash flow problems that come from poor financial prioritisation. A marriage would risk the same types of problem: great parties, early divorce.

The cautious domesticated Rabbit is the nemesis of the Rooster. The Rooster likes bling and the Rabbit can see no life in a stone. Any relationship would generally be full of obstruction and passive aggression. The insistent wood of the Tiger is almost as maddening although his fierceness would at least engage the Rooster’s attention. The loyal, consistent Dog bores her rigid.

The Rooster in 2019

The Rooster’s conflict with the Rabbit flared up again in 2018. There were problems at home. Support arrived, briefly, from a distance.

Roosters have been struggling just to maintain status quo. They’re having a hard time accepting the changes required to maintain their usual quality of life. In a Dog year, the elemental nature of your pure Metal self was in direct opposition with year’s Fire nature. That kind of stress gets in your head.

The Rooster doesn’t like being cast in a supporting role but in 2018 there was no avoiding it. You may have talked yourself into thinking you couldn’t handle it. Other people perceive the Rooster as fragile. If she relies on that to excuse herself from difficult situations she’ll never find out how strong she really is. It’s only physical risk you need to avoid in 2019.

2019 brings a more peaceful year, but the Rabbit remains strong. You’re still uncertain as to the loyalty of those you’ve supported the most. Is it that you don’t trust yourself? In March, July and November remember that question. It’s not time for your comeback yet 1957 Fire Rooster Matt Lauer.

During May, June and July, regarding any legal matters, keep up with the details. Don’t be distracted by someone in an expensive suit telling you everything is taken care of. Given the facts you can decide for yourself. A Rooster is capable of finding the error in complex calculations when she applies herself. Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a 1933 Water Rooster, has proved that over and over again.

Romance is draining this year, both for you and your friends Dragon, Snake and Ox. You will find yourself in some kind of triangle – relationship or otherwise, probably in May. There are players in the game that you didn’t know about; could be family members.

You are always surprised when people open up to you so here’s your early warning: it’s going to be one of those years. Be especially available in January, April, and May for friends who need to talk. Model the good faith that you seek.

Keep an eye on the Monkey, your partner in the House of Business. Their normally adept calculations may be off this year. They may require a nudge regarding health issues. You’ve likely been taking care of the Monkey since the middle of 2018. Keep it up.

December 2018-late March 2019 is simply an extension of the Dog year, especially in terms of your health and what you do to support it. April, when you receive help from a powerful friend, is your smoothest month of the year.

In May, guard against crying wolf. Assess, then determine who needs help – or doesn’t. Either way, help is always there. Sometimes it just takes longer to arrive.

For the last half of the year, especially in September, your cutting words harm you most. Be careful not to compromise that loyalty you crave.

Further education may be available in 2019 for some Roosters, but only if there’s enough water present. Want to know what the heck I mean by that? Book a BaZi.

Monkey in the Year of the Earth Pig 2019

January 28, 2019

Who is a Monkey?

Years:  1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004.
Month*:  August
Hour: 15.00-17.00

Day: Ask Us
* Caution: the start of the Chinese month can be as early as the 4th & as late as the 9th, depending on the year. I can let you know this too.

What is a Monkey?
The image of the Three Wise Monkeys, See No Evil, Hear No Evil, and Speak No Evil is a mediaeval Japanese summary of the qualities of the metal Monkey who is yang Metal and a particularly unbalanced primate. The image is of someone of course who shrinks from involvement. In elemental terms, this often amounts to too much yang Metal. What is meant by yang Metal essentially is competition. Often the Monkey is so competitive he dare not enter the race.

As well as competitive, the Monkey is typically charming, loveable, dextrous, logical and quick witted and has a gift for precision. The balanced Monkey uses these qualities constructively and in the service of his fellow man. The unbalanced Monkey (with say an August birthday and a late afternoon hour) does not clean up behind himself. He is in short a monkey.

The Monkey is often the most acquisitive as well as the gentlest beast but he is above all, competitive. In the extreme this means warfare. In its milder forms it is the ruthless competition that involves the belief that another’s gain is our loss. This is a (painful) mistake. It’s what leads to steroid abuse in athletics and ballet dancing in the Premier League penalty box. The Metal Monkey may learn this lesson early; it’s what makes him gentle; all Monkeys subscribe to this delusion to a greater or lesser extent.

Just as you’d expect, the pitfall of the Monkey is frivolity. If he can’t win he takes the Mickey. The Monkey’s natural allies are the Rat and the Dragon. This is a pretty heavy-duty grouping, perhaps the most powerful in the Chinese Zodiac. Naturally dominant Rats and egotistical Dragons are not, as a rule a bundle of laughs; the Monkey however often is. And together these three get stuff done; most of the big revolutions of ideas involve this team.

The influence of this trio spreads everywhere: Sigmund Freud perhaps the most influential thinker of the 20th Century, Michele Obama possibly the most influential woman in the world, Dragons. Even Jesus if you take AD32 as his birth year.* And somewhere in there if we delve deeply enough, we find unsung Monkeys and Rats making it happen. The Rat plots, the Monkey gets out there and competes. Probably St Paul, the man who sold Christianity to the world was a Monkey.

* That’s up for debate of course but presumably he was a Capricorn anyway.

Monkey for sure is Karen Armstrong author of a History of God, founder of the Charter for Compassion and arguably the most important thinker of the 21st Century. This is a Monkey who has learned to speak no evil while seeing much.

The Monkey also tends to understand the mechanical: engines and systems; he is the grease Monkey. He also tends to understand maths, science and argument and so is suited very often to a career in engineering or the law, also accountancy. Unbalanced, he neglects all of the above. The Monkey month of August spans Leo and Virgo and to see him as a hybrid of Virgo control and Leo passion is not far from the truth.

When the Tiger and the Snake meet the Monkey there is trouble. The Monkey both co-operates with and fights the Snake. The presence of the Tiger pushes this competition over the edge. Keep these three apart. The Monkey must take care to mind her p’s and q’s every February (the month of the Tiger) and every May (the month of the Snake).

So that’s the Monkey:  argumentative practical, mischievous and so competitive he can withdraw altogether. But you knew that already didn’t you?

The Monkey in 2019

2018 was a tough year for the Monkey. Your plans were derailed by illness and accident, probably beginning in May. R.I.P 1956 Fire Monkey Anthony Bourdain.

It was a year filled with endings. The Dog doesn’t do much for the Monkey even though they are seasonal companions. The Dog is jealous that the Monkey is hard on the Rabbit, yet has the potential to steal her away.

2019 could be draining; a final wringing out following the events of the last three years. Being Snake’s secret bestie you find yourself drawn into conflict on behalf of a partner, colleague or friend. Your love/hate relationship with the Snake means at the very least you’ll be caught up in the fall out. You really dislike being drawn in this way. Not only does it distract you from your work, it’s exhausting. The solution to your problem is the Pig. She is uniquely suited to be your negotiator.

The first quarter of the year is the time to learn something new. Try meditation. Get a check up and focus on wellness early. That’s the way to mitigate the hit your health may take due to accident or illness in the last half of the year. Take time off in September and/or November.

In April you’ll get a small break from the Dragon, but the already watery nature of the year continues to drain you. Adjust expectations. This too shall pass.

In May, someone close to you makes mistakes that have consequences for you. This is not the year for relying on the judgement of friends to keep you safe. The competition you face in 2019 is anything but straightforward. Seek independence.

The Monkey has important things to say this year but needs to take care with how he expresses himself. Your usual jokes are likely to provoke rather than amuse.

In a Pig year the tendency of things to turn to Wood brings out a Monkey’s juvenile urge to fight instead of talking things out. In discussion you may feel yourself wanting to needle. Small disagreements quickly escalate to big conflicts. In February, March, April and November that type of behavior could blow up out of proportion and get the attention of law enforcement or the court system.

Speaking of justice, in February, 1944 Wood Monkey Robert Mueller should be releasing his final report regarding Russian interference during the 2016 election. People are concerned that either the report won’t be made public, or that Mueller will be reticent under questioning. He’s a Water day stem person with the Sheep in his month and the Rabbit in his day. In a Pig year we will hear more from Robert than his typical “yes”, “no”, and “maybe” answers.

All in all, no need to worry. With Fortune Virtue on your side basic needs for food and income will be easily met. Donate to a cause that is meaningful to you. Find new places to spend your time – even within your own house. Your usual spot in the southwest is not helpful in 2019.  Get in touch if you want to know more about that.

Sheep in the Year of the Earth Pig 2019

January 24, 2019

Who is a Sheep?

focus photo of brown sheep under blue sky

Years:  1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003.
Month*:  July
Hour: 13.00-15.00

Day: Ask Us
* Caution: the start of the Chinese month can be as early as the 4th & as late as the 9th, depending on the year. I can let you know this too.

What is a Sheep?
Idealistic, yin earth, not the top getter-onner, the Sheep has well-meant judgements about everybody which can sometimes keep her stuck in first gear. For the unbalanced Sheep (July birthday and/or Mid-afternoon birth) ambition and foolishness are pretty much the same thing. On the other side of the fence the grass is not greener; it’s actually brown both sides. The balanced Sheep though, as well as being an expert judge of people, knows exactly what matters and is not easily diverted from it. The arrangement for instance that Sheep Bruce Willis,  his ex Demi Moore and her ex (and Bruce’s fishing buddy) Ashton Kutcher came to, whereby they stayed friends and the children avoided becoming conflicted is not usual, either in Hollywood or the world at large but it is typical Sheep behaviour.

Conversely, the value of caution and conservatism is often clear in Sheep relationships. The most obvious of these is with the extrovert spontaneous Horse whose sidekick the Sheep often ends up being. With the Sheep beside him, the Horse’s fun may be a little less riotous but he will also stay out of serious trouble. The young Horse and Sheep of 1978 and 1979 for instance, are often a tag team who go out drinking and clubbing together. The Sheep may stand back in amazement at the daring of the Horse but is there both to pick up the pieces and to take advantage when these risks bear fruit. The Horse dances on tables, the Sheep ensures a soft landing.

This of course illustrates a psychological truth about the Sheep: the risk-taking they shy away from is exactly what attracts them most. Many a desirable partner has on the rebound from a Horse, found a life-long proposition in the Sheep.

Placed as the Sheep is between the Horse and the Monkey in the Chinese Zodiac, they also understand the trickiness of the Monkey. There is generally a certain wariness between them but this unorthodox team is capable of magic.

The Sheep also forms a natural affiliation with the Pig and the Rabbit; a very domestic alliance. The Chinese ideograph for home is a Pig under a roof and the average Rabbit would happily stay home 24/7 if allowed to. The Rabbit is the diplomat and mixer while the Pig who is inherently versatile takes up the slack of whatever jobs there are to perform. The Sheep makes things safe. She will have ensured for instance that there are no mutually sworn enemies on the guest list. The typical Sheep is an ideal social secretary as well as a master resolver of conflict. Psycho-therapy is among appropriate career paths.

The Sheep is passionate, representing the yin or feminine side of sexuality but whether male or female, the Sheep is more seducer than chatter up.

Perhaps most interestingly, the Sheep forms a team with the Dog, the Dragon and the Ox. Individually each of these three is somewhat intimidating to her but when this group gathers, her value becomes obviously. She can draw flexibility from the Dog, humility from the Dragon and cheerful co-operation from the autocratic Ox. Above all he ensures peace among them. Even if all they do is make the coffee, the Sheep is a comforter of the insecure. She understands that most barkers never bite and that aggression is simply inverted fear.

The Sheep in 2019

For the Sheep, 2018 was the breakup year; losing friendships, changing jobs, moving house or literally breaking up. Sheep who went with the flow took control by choosing what the changes would be, still October made you consider that your efforts were in vain. You know all the clash was meant to remove the obstacles that were holding you back, right?

In 2018 you had a hard time finding your people. A Sheep’s worst nightmare is being culled from the herd. Kurt Cobain, a 1967 Fire Sheep, lost his way when his relationship with Courtney Love separated him from his friends. Interestingly, Courtney’s got a Sheep in the day branch, right where Kurt would be.

In 2019 you’re safe again and back in the swim of things. It’s time to form new alliances and renew old ones with eyes having been opened wide by the Dog. The Sheep’s ability to maintain innocence is a gift, but she uses it as a way of checking out. Sometimes facing the ugly truth is required for the Sheep’s personal growth.

2019 is your year for healing, even physical rehabilitation. Form new groups. Along with the Rabbit, you coined the term “grassroots movement”. Like 1995 Wood Sheep Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, you lead by mobilizing groups of people; helping them to unite their small efforts for a bigger cause.

Someone who is more comfortable working alone more than you are will probably take credit for your efforts. Pay no mind to that. People see what you’re doing.

You are the most inclusive of the Chinese Zodiac animals. A Sheep I know and love has said many times: There’s always room for another pal. I think that was the original intention of organized religion but it got lost along the way. Political and financial concerns generated policies that exclude people based on race, gender or sexual preference. Your spirit, in union with the Pig, can rectify this. The Sheep can organize and unite different groups, bringing spirituality to bear in healing our planet. In 2019 you are the Tin Yute. The world needs you to reclaim the power of the people.

In the first quarter of the year, expect to be overemployed. After all that time on the bench, now everybody wants you. This is what you’ve been waiting for.

Welcome new neighbors; organize shelter and provision. Provide hospitality for newcomers and friends. March and July strengthen you by bringing teammates who share your mission. In April, someone in a position of power gives you a leg up because of your efforts.

Your most comfortable months will be May-July. The Metal and Water energies of fall and winter make it easy for your work to bring in the money.

Update your belief system because your clash animal, the Ox, is coming into power. The causes you think are merely personal are the ones you’ll need to back in a more public, political way if you really want change. Look for what you have in common with others. The door is open now.
