Pig 2018

Who is a Pig?
Years:  1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007.
Month*:  November
Hour: 09:00 pm – 11:00 pm
Day: ask us
* Caution: the start of the Chinese month can be as early as the 4th & as late as the 9th, depending on the year. I can let you know this too.

What is a Pig?
The weakness and the strength of the yin water Pig is to think they know what is good for them. Generally they do, and the maddening thing is that they are actually right often enough to make advice close to impossible. By extension this means you may believe you know what is right for everybody else.
Versatile and wilful, gifted at whatever they do, the Pig is the sign of the inventor. Edison was a Pig, as is Hillary Clinton and Wikileaker Julian Assange. Perfectly-balanced Pigs can literally do almost anything but they don’t always handle the truth well. They don’t much like reflective advice from others and they often hate not to know for sure. Remember Fire Pig Elton John in “Tantrums and Tiaras”?
But vagueness is also uncomfortable for the Pig: Edison was of course an obsessive patenter, Hillary determined to get Wall Street onside in the teeth of her liberal credentials and Assange, confident that he knows better than anyone else what the world needs to know. This does not make any of them mistaken but the truth can be a moveable feast.
The Pig is communicative because it is a water sign. A balanced Pig (perhaps March birth around mid-afternoon) is a great audience and typically gets the listening/talking ratio just right. An unbalanced Pig can shoot off at the mouth and give (or take) away the farm before she knows it. Does any of this sound like – to pluck a name from nowhere – Earth Pig Simon Cowell?
More likely, you are prone to withdrawing into silence. The Pig can sulk but can also withdraw simply out of disinterest and be perfectly cheerful when challenged on the withdrawal. The Pig child needs just the right mixture of carrot and stick. Too much disincentive and he is suppressed or resentful. Too much carrot and he can be smug. The balanced Pig is the most sensitive of the animals; the unbalanced Pig suffers an empathy bypass. As the parent of a Pig, just remember you are instrumental in this process. Your Piglet does not need to become a boor.
The Pig embodies the wood of creativity so they can be as adept with the written as the spoken word as well as the yang earth that makes them able to concentrate deeply. Many Pigs prefer to study in noisy rooms and many are effortless A-students as teachers of third year undergraduates of 2017 may notice. Bear in mind though that there is a near-epidemic of depression and anxiety among millennials and that Water is the associated element. Don’t ever take a Pig’s good cheer for granted.
The Pig does not tend to like the Snake; one way or another they immobilise each other. The Snake’s intimate, the Monkey, can be a source of annoyance also.
The Pig’s most natural team is with the Rabbit and the Sheep. This is a domestic alliance. Together these three naturally make anywhere home. A perfect family might be Pig father, Rabbit mother and Sheep first-born. Once home, the Rabbit entertains while the Sheep ensures compatibility and the Pig does skilfully the tasks that are beyond her partners.
Traditionally the Pig also enjoys the company of the Tiger as Water Pig David Furnish can attest. You might think she’d be more cautious but she knows that the Tiger is uninterested in conquering anyone he considers easy meat. Of course he’s missing something here but the Pig’s fearless approach often disarms the Tiger before he realises.  And by the bye, Pig’s literary ambition may burgeon in a Tiger year and flourish in a Rabbit one.
Although she may herself be more adventurous, the Pig also understands the loyal and consistent Dog. She respects the fact that every home needs its guardian. These two will tend to develop a camaraderie with its own distinctive banter. The Pig respects the Dog’s diligence and the Dog knows the Pig will compensate for his weakness.
The Pig also operates well as factotum for a group consisting of the Snake (whom she can’t otherwise stand for any length of time) the Monkey (see above) and the Tiger. For these she is, interestingly, the peacemaker and setter of standards. Without the Pig this grouping whose common interest is travel and mobility, can’t get off the ground.
One final note: the Pig suffers what is called the self curse. That is to say that she has limited patience with other Pigs. The Chinese character for a house is one Pig under a roof. Just the one.

The Rooster in the Year of the Earth Dog 2018

February 22, 2018

Rooster 2018

Who is a Rooster?

Years:  1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005.
Month*:  September
Hour: 05:00 pm -07:00 pm
Days: ask us
* Caution: the start of the Chinese month can be as early as the 4th & as late as the 9th, depending on the year. I can let you know this too.

What is a Rooster?

The Rooster is yin metal, the night bird, glamorous with an eye for presentation and detail. She appreciates an argument and likes to win but has little patience for causes that drag on. She will appreciate jewellery, fine art and good living and create wealth easily. Conversely of course, a dangerous Rooster like Qaseem Soleimani (Iranian General i/c of the Iraqi Army – Google him) can reject such distractions in order to serve a cause that has indeed dragged on for decades. This is yin and yang.

The rule this illustrates (by violating it) is that a typical Rooster is suited to work that involves short decisive arguments such as that of an advocate. Her brief passion is the perfect support for a client. She can defend with enormous commitment and then move on to the next one. That commitment is 100% but it is short lived. If she is in a job that involves holding her peace she may fret and become ill.

Osama bin Laden was a typical 1957 fire Rooster: one big splash and he was off. For you, a car must be fast, a partner challenging and life full of twists and turns. The Rooster is likely to be quick witted rather than profound, with a short attention span.

Her allies the Snake and the Ox are sometimes impatient with her because she can digress so widely and so easily but she brings to the metal alliance the pure competitiveness that the Ox might otherwise misuse and the Snake misunderstand. Think Ed Miliband snatching leadership of the opposition from under his brother's nose. The Rooster is pure metal – that is determined to prevail at all costs – Snake and Ox are not. They will not win many cases or many contracts without her and they would do well to pay and respect her appropriately despite the fact that she demands longer holidays and a better remuneration package.  Conversely if she fails to respect a support system that dots i’s and crosses t’s in order to support the intuitive flashes that s/he can exploit but seldom generate, she will not prosper.

Her pitfalls are sex, drugs and rock’n’roll. She likes to party and her personality may be addictive; the Rooster prefers dusk to dawn and also the small hours.

The Rooster enjoys a powerful alliance with the Dragon in which she, uniquely in the average Dragon’s experience, may hold the whip hand. This is not always entirely healthy. She can bend the Dragon out of shape just as the Ox can bend the Rat. This sway must be employed responsibly otherwise both can be damaged. With that proviso this is one of the strongest and longest-lasting alliances in the Chinese zodiac.

Predictably the Rooster is one of the charismatic Flowers of Romance. Success and glamorous partners come easily to her. Often a Rooster can punch above her weight in this regard. Cinderella was a Rooster and so is Yoko Ono. This effortlessness can make for complacency; bitterness is more common among middle-aged Roosters than any other animal. Not the remarkable Ms Ono btw. Roosters are often long-lived also.

With the Monkey she can form a commercial alliance. A business co-run by these two will be irresistibly attractive but may not open on time. It may not close promptly either and may also suffer the cash flow problems that come from poor financial prioritisation. A marriage would risk the same types of problem: great parties, early divorce. The unbalanced Metal creatures – Monkey and Rooster – sometimes know and understand precision but don’t respect it.

The cautious domesticated Rabbit is the nemesis of the Rooster who likes bling while the Rabbit can see no life in a stone. Any such relationship would generally be full of obstruction and passive aggression. The insistent wood of the Tiger is almost as maddening although his fierceness would at least engage the Rooster’s attention. The loyal, consistent Dog risks boring her rigid.

The Sheep in the Year of the Earth Dog 2018

February 20, 2018

Sheep 2018

Who is a Sheep?

Years:  1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015.
Month*:  July
Hour: 01:00 pm – 03:00 pm
Day: ask us
* Caution: the start of the Chinese month can be as early as the 4th & as late as the 9th, depending on the year. I can let you know this too.

What is a Sheep?

Idealistic, yin earth, not the top getter-onner, the Sheep has well-meant judgements about everybody which can sometimes keep her stuck in first gear. For the unbalanced Sheep (July birthday and/or mid-afternoon birth) ambition and foolishness are pretty much the same thing. On the other side of the fence the grass is not greener; it’s actually brown on both sides. The balanced Sheep though, as well as being an expert judge of people, knows exactly what matters and is not easily diverted from it. Metal Sheep Rupert Murdoch as an example, may be all sorts of deluded but not in the above regard.

Conversely, the value of caution and conservatism is often clear in Sheep relationships. The most obvious of these is with the extrovert, spontaneous Horse whose sidekick the Sheep often ends up being. With the Sheep beside him, the Horse’s fun may be a little less riotous but he will also stay out of serious trouble. The Horse and Sheep of 1978 and 1979 for instance, are often a tag team who go out drinking and clubbing together. The Sheep may stand back in amazement at the Horse’s daring but she is there both to pick up the pieces and to take advantage when these risks bear fruit. The Horse dances on tables, the Sheep buys the drinks. This of course illustrates a psychological truth about the Sheep: the risk-taking they shy away from is exactly what attracts them most. What often follows also is that a desirable partner, on the rebound from a Horse, finds a steadier proposition in the Sheep.

Anyway, placed as you are between the Horse and the Monkey in the Chinese Zodiac, you understand the tricky Monkey. There is generally a certain mutual wariness but this unorthodox team is capable of magic. Consider btw the eternal rectangle of Monkeys Wendi Deng and Jerry Hall, Horse Mick Jagger and Sheep Rupert Murdoch. Perhaps throw in Horse Cherie and Snake Tony Blair to make it interesting.

The Sheep also affiliates easily with the Pig and the Rabbit. This is a very domestic alliance. The Chinese ideograph for home is a Pig under a roof and the average Rabbit would also happily stay home 24/7 if allowed to. The Rabbit is the diplomat and mixer while the Pig who is inherently versatile, takes up the slack of whatever jobs there are to perform. The Sheep makes things safe. She will have ensured for instance that there are no mutually sworn enemies on the guest list. The typical Sheep is an ideal social secretary as well as a master resolver of conflict. Psycho-therapy is among the appropriate career paths.

The Sheep is passionate, representing the yin or feminine side of sexuality, but whether male or female, he is more seducer than chatter up.

Perhaps most interestingly, the Sheep forms a team with the Dog, the Dragon and the Ox. Individually each of these three is somewhat intimidating to her but when this group gathers, the Sheep’s unique gifts become essential: drawing flexibility from the Dog, humility from the Dragon and cheerful co- operation from the autocratic Ox. Above all she ensures peace among them. Even if all she does is make the coffee, the Sheep is a comforter of the insecure. She understands that most barkers never bite and that aggression is simply inverted fear. When in doubt, join.

The Rabbit in the Year of the Earth Dog 2018

February 16, 2018

Rabbit 2018

Who is a Rabbit?

Years:  1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011.
Month*:  March
Hour: 05:00 am – 07:00 am
Day: ask us

* Caution: the start of the Chinese month can be as early as the 4th & as late as the 9th, depending on the year. I can let you know this too.

What is a Rabbit?

The Rabbit is yin wood, which makes him essentially gentle and domestic. Her time is early morning; the legend has it that she and the Rooster swapped places which is why the cock of the Chinese Zodiac crows not at dawn but at dusk. Accordingly the Rabbit rules the Spring – think of March Hares and Easter Bunnies – and the Rooster the autumn.

The Rabbit is subtle, in keeping with his yin nature. He provides service readily and is often suited to catering and caring. But her preparedness to roll up her sleeves makes her the unexpected queen of networking. If you want to be introduced to the person in charge, ask a Rabbit. As a business person however, you open deals much better than you close them. There is no hardness about you. Do not confuse hard with tough; the Rabbit is the most resilient of all Animals.

You are accordingly well able to wait your turn; vigilance and patience are typical. Natural allies are the Pig and the Sheep. This is a house-proud team and the Rabbit is a team player. Your unexpected friend is the Dog who values your ability to charm without threat.

The Rabbit also belongs to the gathering known as the Flowers of Love (or Plumflowers) along with the Horse, the Rooster and Rat. She may often find herself clearing up behind these three extroverts and quite often the cuddle-bunny will obtain a life partner from the leavings of more obviously glamorous colleagues. Be aware that these extroverts and schemers need you in order to function properly.

The Rabbit tends to be conservative with a small “c”. Early rising is typical but this tendency to the yang of early alertness may be demonstrated by the yin of sleeping in. Lazybones or insomniac, sleeping is an issue. This is better cured by adjusting your timing than by pharmaceuticals.

Because of the unflattering connotations of the local word for Rabbit, in Vietnam this Animal is called the Cat. Intuitively this does not sit right. The ideogram so clearly has ears. Yin wood relates to the eyes and to the Spring, leaves and flowers and grass, none of which are feline attributes.

In some ways the Rabbit epitomises yin. Yang wood may be best characterised as an outwards and upwards movement like the growth of a tree. Yin wood is more of a pure outward expansion like the spreading of grass. What these two expressions of wood have in common is irresistibility. But they are very different types of irresistibility. To counter yang wood we need yang metal: an axe will cut down the biggest tree. But you could attack a lawn with that same axe and not remove all the grass in a lifetime. This is the power of yin wood. I often use Water Rabbit Michelle Obama as a good example of such irresistibility. Remember her on the stump for Hillary? A month of that and Trump would have been consigned to history.

Wood is both stubborn and flexible. Yin wood (as characterised by soen, the wind of the South East) is thorough as well as organised. Hexagram 53 of the Book of Changes, Gradual Progress describes the ability of the little tree to grow on the hilltop despite the wind, either by throwing itself absolutely upon the mercy of the tao or following a detailed plan that it follows meticulously. Or some combination.

The Dragon is said to lose money when the Rabbit arrives. This may be because the Dragon is distracted by a neighbour so apparently different in nature. The Rabbit is a borrower as well as a burrower and the Dragon thinks little of tomorrow. So this is not generally a great pairing but the fact is that the Rabbit sitting between the Tiger and the Dragon shares qualities with both. Partnership with the Tiger is sometimes formalised as the House of Diplomacy. The Rabbit offers carrot while the Tiger wields a stick. This arrangement exemplifies the truism that more is achieved with a kind word and a gun than with a kind word alone.

Other prominent Rabbits include Russell Brand, who despite his wild exterior, is that most romantic of Animals, the 1975 Wood Rabbit. Wood represents bone, spine and hair as well as eyes: the light is fire but the receiving organ is wood. The Rabbit is often not strong in these regards, unlike the Tiger. This is yin and yang.

The Golden Pig: the Month of the Metal Pig 2017

November 10, 2017

Slightly different format this month. No editorial/chit-chat. There’ll be plenty in the Diary which will go out a little later in the month. This is more of a bulletin and we’ll call it that from now.
From time to time we aim to replace or augment bulletins and diaries with video.
So watch your inbox.

I hope this meets with your approval. Any feedback, comments, expressions of resentment or joy that you may feel the need to respond with are of course very welcome.

The Golden Pig: the Month of the Metal Pig 2017.

Hexagram 2

Animal by Animal
During this Metal Pig Month,
The Rat is ready,
The Ox may defend,
The Tiger sees openings,
The Rabbit finds company;
The Dragon holds fast if she’s smart,
The Snake is especially truthful,
The Horse may have lonely moments,
The Sheep joins up,
The old Monkey tries new tricks,
The Rooster either preys or prays,
The Dog may feel uprooted,
and
The Pig needs space.

Remember there is an Animal in your ba zi relating to each of the Year, Month, Day and Hour of birth that represents different aspects of your life:
Year Animal:               physicality, forebears, heritage, the obvious
and the immediate.
Month Animal:           the work environment, education, peers, siblings,
exes;
Day Animal:               you and your beloved;
Hour Animal:             your most intimate thoughts, children, dreams,
the future.

An 8 month implies immediate positive change.
Most helpful location: tai chi – the geometrical heart of the house
Favoured Animals: Rabbit, Sheep and Tiger.
Especially challenged one way or another: Pig, Snake, Monkey.
The Hexagram (above): Kun, Earth; the source of power, all to play for.

A Day with Richard Ashworth:
The Year of the Mutt, Forecast Day 2018,
The Year of the Earth Dog
,

Sat December 2nd, Godalming.

The Earth Dog is resolute. She is restless and immovable, an uneasy combination; which may be why so many powerful women were born under this sign; they just don’t know how to give up. The emerging 9th Fate continues to make this the Age of Woman and 2018 will see that re-balancing proceed.

In 2018 a house facing South East may be favoured. There are however many ways to harness the fresh energy which we will be discussing. Similarly Rabbits may find themselves with some sort of free ticket and the Dragon may feel challenged. None of this is written in stone however, as you will learn.

Globally we can expect the establishment to be shaken but not stirred. The map suggests trouble in North Korea (no prizes for that) but also Venezuela, Morocco, Nepal and among the Uighurs of Western China. Unbalanced Dogs like Donald Trump will tend to continue to shy away from self-awareness and Horses such as Angela Merkel may chase their own tails.

As the sage wrote, the only constant is change, so for each country, each occupation and each individual there will be fresh opportunities. Whether these prove positive or otherwise is a question of our choice in reacting to them. Though we all have preferences the tao is generally without bias.

If there is a point in knowing Classical Chinese Feng Shui it is surely to make our lives and those around us happier, healthier, wealthier and wiser. As it happens in 2017 the Roosters of 1957 hit 60 (that is the end of their first cycle). In a sense this means they landed back in the late 1950’s with the opportunity to pick up on the lessons missed first time round. This principle made 2016 an interesting year for 1956 Fire Monkey Theresa May and understanding it, the Qing Emperor Qian Loong actually retired to grow vegetables after ruling from 1733 to 1793. Where in that cycle of 60 years are you as you read this?

Horticulture may not be your plan but you might like to join us on December 2nd  in Godalming (repeated online via Zoom on the 3rd) to examine how the coming year is likely to affect you, your family, your business and the world.
Info: sheilaashworthfengshui@gmail.com
For the thrifty, the Early Bird offer remains open.

Where to be in November.
Summary: the most creative location currently.
Tai chi, the Heart: Year Star: 1 Month Star: 8.
Home is where the heart is and this is the heart of the home. Both of these stars are helpful; the 1 loosens tongues (generally in a good way) and the 8 makes things work. When these Stars meet, it’s time to push the boat out. If we add Metal in the form of a 6-Pipe Metal Windchime or even simply Metal objects, we can make the helpful 1:6:8 combination. Alternately constant bright light stimulates the 8 to deliver. Either way, aim to spend time at the heart of your space this month.
Enhancement: Bright light (that is Fire) and/or Metal.

Where not to be in November.
Summary: the least helpful area right now.
South West, Accumulation: Year Star 7, Month Star: 5.
The South West relates to relationship, co-operation, gentleness, the Mother and all the qualities associated with Woman and the yin. The 7 there all year has made the equality of women top priority and the mischievous 5 brings it to a head. It’s likely to be a shaky month if we locate or face SW too much. SW-facing buildings of course and SW doors suffer the same drawbacks. Who’s going to tell Harvey Weinstein?
Solution: Metal objects , 6 Pipe Metal Windchime, wu lou .

East and West Groups: Everybody falls into either the East or the West Group by virtue of their birth date. The calculation is simple but if you do want to know where you belong, email me at richardashworth@imperialfengshui.info.
Readers Digest version: East Group people best face East, South, South-East and North and/or in buildings and beds backing onto these directions. West Group vice-versa. Sorry it’s fiddly, I’m not making this stuff up.

And now the (Western) take of the very perceptive Lorna Bevan:

Stripping
Hexagram 23

Animal by Animal
During this Metal Dog Month,
The Rat is wary,
The Ox insists,
The Tiger’s rules prevail,
But the Rabbit’s way works;
The Dragon tacks,
The Snake hides but only for now,
The Horse seeks excellence,
The wise Sheep seeks mediation,
Some moments may pass the Monkey by,
The Rooster rests,
The Dog sticks to it,
and
The Pig awaits advantage.

A 9 month visibility, prominence, fame, spontaneity and snap-judgement.
Most helpful location: South-East. Favoured Animals: Tiger, Horse, Dog, Rabbit.
Especially challenged one way or another: Rooster and Dragon.
The Hexagram (above): Po Stripping. No false moves.

The Year of the Mutt, 2018. Right now I’m working on my Forecast Day for 2018, The Year of the Earth Dog, on Saturday December 2nd in Godalming.  Traditionally Dragon and Rooster are challenged in a Dog year. And Rabbits, Tigers, Horses and the Dog herself are boosted. 2018 echoes previous Dogs like 2006 when the world was in a bit of a pickle and more precisely Earth Dogs like 1838, a year of conflict with China and in the US with Mexico. This time South-East facing houses have a bit of a free ticket and North West not so much. There’s much more; about you, your family, your work and the world in 2018. Join us. Further info: Sheila@imperialfengshui.info

Where to be this month.
Summary: the most creative location currently.
South East, Determination: Year Star: 9 Dragon Virtue, Month Star: 8.
Best place yet again as it will be most of next year. Seek out the South East sector (as measured from the tai chi) but also SE doors and buildings facing SE. Eldest Daughter (ie the single but eligible female) will have a good time here about now. Again this applies also to kuas (ask) 1, 3, 4 and 9 who should sleep with head South East for now. Rooster will as ever tend to find assistance and much more here. Use that SE door!
Month Solution: plants, bright light, Water fountain.
Annual Enhancement: Four Plants (eg bamboo stems), Water fountain.
Where not to be this month.
Summary: the least helpful area right now.
North, Distant Future: Year Star 6, Moon. Month Star: 5.
The avuncular 6 is bent out of shape by the 5 this month. Authority may be misused if wielded here. Which like much of this information, reflects the world and the coming Dog month and year. Poor for the older man and the talkative; security is a hazard here now. Worst for West Group kuas (ask), Horses and Sheep. Dragons and Monkeys might gain from the indiscretion but don’t push it.
Month Enhancement: Metal objects , 6 Pipe Metal Windchime, t’ang lung.
Annual Solution: A large (6kg+) rose quartz, a little Metal, occasional Water, shake but don’t stir.

Know your inner beast. How Dogged are you?
Birth in the Dog Hour (7-9pm)~: a fixed future.
Birth on the Dog Day#: a certain fixity.
Birth in the Dog Month (October)*: clear career path.
Birth in the Dog Year: mate for life.
~ GMT. # You’ll need a Chinese calendar for this. * Caution: Chinese months start later.
Father along.
“He who gives no thought to difficulties in the future is sure to be beset by worries much closer to hand.” Confucius.
Symbolically there’s little difference between Authority, Father and God. It doesn’t matter how feckless or ineffectual a Father is, on some level he is going to represent those things. To his children if to no one else. Many of us feel released when we reach this realisation. I write as the Father of six.
It’s the North West of a building that concerns the Father, so I’m unsurprised when that piece is missing from Rajul and Chandra’s little house in North London. Brother and sister, they’ve decamped from the South Atlantic largely to pursue their dreams away from family disapproval. He wants to manage property, she wants to settle down, both bright, educated, nice-looking people.
Their North West is literally like a slice cut out of a cake. That part of the compass of course often lacks light but here a gap in the trees has made a little sun-trap, conveniently enclosed by picket fence. It is as if their missing Father is waiting for company. Elementally the Father is Metal, I tell them.
“So place Metal here,” I recommend. “Garden furniture or machinery. And occupy the space. Perhaps a barbecue from time to time.” The Fire of this last will stimulate the Metal. “But don’t overdo it. And be aware that Father, your Father, the Father is here.” And not 10,000 miles away.
We talk ba zi. Chandra wants children and domesticity. Some bad experiences have made it hard for her to trust. There are tears in her eyes as we speak.
“Miracles are very simple,” I tell her boldly. She purses her lips.
“Not easy; simple. Chinese thought separates reality into three categories: Heaven, Earth and Human. Tian ti ren. Heaven, tian, is the rules as we find them – light, heat, gravity, those factors that limit us as long as we are flesh. Ti, Earth is what we do about them physically which includes taking shelter, nourishing and caring for ourselves, medicine and indeed feng shui. Human qi – ren – is choice.”
She breathes deeply and sniffles a little. I hold her gaze.
“It’s choice that makes for transformation. And there are perhaps two parts to it. Both are about truth. One is emotional, to do with feelings; it’s yin, that is feminine if you like, lunar and located in the trunk of the body.” I touch my tan tian, just below my sternum, the place where feelings sit.
“The trick here is to breathe, to feel into the feelings there. Some of them we’d rather not have. So much of our time is spent avoiding what we choose to call negative feelings. Drink, soap opera, over-eating, sex, drugs and rock’n’roll, they reassure and they distract. And we stay stuck.”
Maybe not rock’n’roll.
“So breathe into those feelings. They’ll hurt at first and then they won’t and then finally they’ll change. And you’ll trust.”
Her deep brown eyes are moist again.
“That’s the first part. Second part is to remember what you want. While you invite those feelings by breathing into them. Consider how you want your life to be in every detail: where you want to be, who with, what you’re doing and so on. Make it rich and real.”
You’ll find this second piece of advice in the biographies of business moguls like Steve Jobs and Richard Branson. What you won’t generally come across in such reminiscences is the first part: feeling your feelings and being brave enough to let them transform. Mostly these winners bypassed their feelings. And ultimately it may be that they regret it. Read what Steve Jobs said to his kids when he knew he was dying. Abundance is a much bigger issue than wealth.
“It is not feeling that hurts it is not-feeling that hurts,” I remind Chandra. We do some more mechanical stuff, arrange their beds and furniture, I recommend some changes of décor and locate a Water (that is Wealth) Star at the foot of their stairs and I leave them to it.
I’m the Father of six children. My top priority is to fulfill and not disappoint.

2018: The Year of the Mutt

September 14, 2017

Sheila here with some information for you all.

The Year of the Mutt.
Richard’s Forecast Day for 2018, the Year of the Earth Dog.
December 2nd 2017 in Godalming, Surrey from 10am until 5pm.
Venue to be confirmed.

With world leaders recklessly squaring up to each other and waiting for the other to swerve, 2017 may have been not so much the Year of the Rooster as the Year of Chicken. And so the Earth Dog 2018 may be the Year of the Muttat its worst the kind of dog that tugs on its lead with no idea of where it wants to go once it’s pulled loose.

This may be the running theme of 2018 in your home, your office and internationally. Best consider now how to deal with it.

And 2018 is ruled by the 9 Star of Fire. Which changes all sorts of things. Among others it focuses on the fair treatment of women. And on reversing climate change.

Dragons will be challenged, as will Roosters – not necessarily a bad thing – as you know no one grows strong without a challenge – a South East door will look particularly shrewd and a North-Western sleeping position or a North-facing house not so much. Rabbits are favoured by the Dog Year by the way as well as Tigers, Horses and the Dog itself. And much more.

This is a really popular event and places are limited. Last year we sold out so email me please to book soon.
Repeated via Zoom, 3rd Dec, 3pm – 9pm. Very limited places.
Early Bird £100 (£105 via Paypal) till 1st Dec, £125 on the door.

Richard has two one-to-one places open for Skype/Zoom tuition
in ba zi and feng shui from mid October. These courses comprise 16 one hour sessions, one to one (for now at least) with Richard. He usually starts by teaching ba zi followed by feng shui. After completing both you may be invited to join his mentoring programme. There is currently a special offer, please email me for details.

I hope we’ll hear from you soon.

Animal by Animal
During this Earth Rooster Month,
The Rat doesn’t quite have enough,
The Ox persists,
The Tiger dodges and weaves,
The Rabbit keeps faith anyway,
The Dragon rises,
The Snake is back,
The Horse competes,
The Sheep is wary,
Some moments may pass the Monkey by,
The Rooster’s comfort zone contracts,
The Dog sticks to it,
and
The Pig presses advantage home.

1 month concerns communication, hazards and unforeseen dangers.
Most helpful location: South-East.
Favoured Animals: Snake, Ox, Dragon,
Especially challenged one way or another: Rooster, Rabbit and Dog.
The Hexagram (above): a watching brief.

The Year of the Mutt: You & the World in 2018,
A Day of forecast with Richard Ashworth
Godalming Saturday December 2nd
Where to do what, when and why this month.
Summary: Where’s it’s all happening.
South East, Determination: Year Star: 9 Dragon Virtue, Month Star: 9.
Best place again, as it will be next month also. SE doors favoured as well as that part of the building (and of the world btw). Specially helpful to kuas (ask) 1,3,4 and 9. Rooster will tend to find assistance here. Use that SE door! East Group – sleep with head East.
Month Solution: plants, bright light.
Annual Enhancement: Four bamboo stems) and/or Water fountain.

One to avoid; where not to be this month.
Summary: Where not to go to avoid unnecessary obstruction.
South, Bright Future: Year Star: wu huang, Month Star: 5.
is always tricky, two of them even more so; accidents, loss and illness loom. Best steer clear. If you can’t, a t’ang lung should lighten things up a tad. Harshest for kuas 2, 6, 7 and 8. Only an expert can tap the wu huang reliably.
Month Enhancement: Metal obects, 6 Pipe Metal Windchime, music box.
Annual Solution: t’ang lung.

Know your inner beast. How Rooster are you?
Birth in the Rooster Hour (5-7pm)~: smart children.
Birth on the Rooster Day#: picky especially in relationship.
Birth in the Rooster Month (September)*: vocation: maths or music.
Birth in the Rooster Year: appearances matter (sometimes most)
~ GMT. # You’ll need a Chinese calendar for this. * Caution: Chinese months start later

This month you learn to read the future. If you can’t do it already of course.

As I write I’m due – connection permitting – to Skype with a student on an island in the Gulf of Mexico, off the West coast of Florida, whose home is awaiting its third battering in as many weeks. Bless her. These huge winds – tai feng – are getting harsher and more frequent. And yet we don’t seem too clever in predicting them.. As Nate Silver points in his book “The Signal and The Noise”, it’s a weather forecast, not a weather prediction. Perhaps climate change is a Chinese hoax after all.

Maybe the gan zhi cycle can help: today Friday the 8th September 2017, the Animal of the day is an Earth Dog, like next year 2018. The energy or qi is the same; the same nature, taste or feel. As I sometimes point out in my morning Tweets, this gives us a chance to consider the future. And because the year and day follow the same cycle, then right now (around 2pm) represents July 2018, the double hour 4-6 (Summertime not GMT) August and so on every two hours until midnight, when the Earth Pig day begins, which of course foreshadows 2019. And so on. If you pay close attention to the feel of the moment, the music that’s just out of earshot, snatches of conversation, the shapes of cloud or flame, you may just get a hint. And what is suggested already is that the hurricane seasons of 2018/9 will be punishing indeed.

This is broadly how Chinese diviners have forecast the future for thousands of years. Generations of patient observers noticed that the daily cycle reproduces the annual: the dawn of the year is February (the month of the Tiger) and the Spring of the day falls between three and five in the morning (the hour of the Tiger). That’s a double hour of course and there are twelve of them as there are twelve months, one for each Animal. China had a twenty-four hour clock centuries before the West. Tidy.

Like almost everybody else who owns Dr Stephen Hawking’s book A Brief History of Time, I haven’t read it. What I have learned about time however is that in a sense everything that has ever happened is still happening and that all that is yet to be is already with us. Destiny as the Book of Changes puts it, is derived from character.

Perhaps ponder that a moment. And as the day passes, you might note what happens, what stands out, what is unusual and what routine. Who are you with? What are you doing? How does it feel? What’s the weather like? If you’re in the Bahamas this last won’t be hard. Nor will it be encouraging.

“But I’ve missed it!” you may be protesting, it’s Friday evening, Saturday midday or even God forbid, Sunday already. Relax, this is a 60-day cycle. There’ll be another Earth Dog along in 60 days. That’s the 7th November. And before that the 6th November is a Fire Rooster like the entirety of 2017.

Perhaps look at that date the other way round, as a recap. What went right? What not-so right? What’s to be learned? Which right turn should have been a left? Which words that came out of our mouths would we change now? What seeds that we planted then are now full-grown?

Try not to be too literal about it; life is made up of metaphors, dream images if you will, and the work of the diviner is to observe and read the waking dream. Watch for the unusual and the out-of-left field. And learn. If as Dr Chuck Spezzano used to say, life is a dream, it’s a pity to have a nightmare.

And if life is for anything, it appears to be for learning. God knows why that would be so – and I mean that pretty literally – and I’m suspicious of anyone else who claims that they do know. But if it is for learning it’s useful sometimes to get an idea of where we’ve got to so far. An awareness of poor decisions along with the humility to know when we cocked up, is very powerful. As is celebrating what went right and what we did that made a positive difference. Many of us rush past the chance to celebrate, often we simply brush away painful memory. Feel it; it’s a part of you now.

As for 2018, the Year of the Earth Dog, expect the tone of Brexit negotiations to change drastically, Putin to intervene in Korea and Spurs to do better in Europe than at home. Dragons will be challenged – not necessarily a bad thing – as will Roosters, who may have been put under pressure recently, a South East door will look particularly shrewd and a North-Western sleeping position not so much.

As it happens right now I’m considering 2018 in preparation for my Forecast Day on Saturday December 2nd in Godalming.  How will that year be for you and the world?

With world leaders recklessly squaring up to each other and waiting for the other to swerve, 2017 may have been not so much the Year of the Rooster as the Year of Chicken. And 2018 may be the Year of the Mutt. Watch for the Dragon to intervene. The Earth Dog is 100% reliable but also restless. And 2018 is ruled by the 9 Star of Fire. Which changes all sorts of things. Among others it focuses on the fair treatment of women. And on reversing climate change.

If you look at today as a fore-shadowing, you may see more. Rabbits are favoured by the Dog Year by the way as well as Tigers, Horses and the Dog itself. What else do you see? The Dragon and Rooster will be challenged and as you know, no one grows strong without challenge.

And on December 3rd we can compare notes. See you then.

Where to do what, when and why this month.
Summary: Where’s it’s all happening.
South East, Determination: Year Star: 9 Dragon Virtue, Month Star: 1.
This is where communication happens during the Monkey month. There is a rare clarity here. Dragon Virtue supports the good reputation of kuas 1 3 4 and 9 as well as certain Monkeys, Rats, Snakes, Roosters and Oxen. All year this is the place to be noticed in a positive way; both achievement and recognition continue to fall to those of us in South East facing houses and/or located SE. And romance is more favoured than ever. Convene, discuss, plot but above all communicate here this month. The 1/perfect 10 combination suggests extended time here will break through long standing career and recognition barriers.
Month Solution: plants, bright light.
Annual Enhancement: Four Plants (eg bamboo stems) and/or a Water fountain.

One to avoid; where not to be this month.
Summary: Where to go to avoid own goals.
North East, Wealth Star: Year Star: 4 gip sat, Month Star: 5.
5 is the power that resists being harnessed; usually best not to try. Keep the NE quiet till September. West Group kuas (8,6,7,2) are less affected and some Rats and Pigs but Monkeys and Sheep should steer clear and this is no place for a Tiger at the moment. Only delay is likely to follow lurking here, facing this way or repeated use of North Eastern doors. Keep the plants here but turn off the lights. No wild parties.
Month Enhancement: Six Pipe Metal Windchime, music box.
Annual Enhancement: Fire, (eg bright light). Four Plants (eg bamboos in Water).
Annual Solution: t’ang lung.

East and West Groups: Everybody falls into East or West Group by way of their birth date. The calculation is simple. To know where you belong, email me.

Readers Digest version: East Group people best face East, South, South-East and North and/or in buildings and beds backing onto these directions. West Group vice-versa. Sorry it’s fiddly, I’m not making this stuff up.

A Dark Mirror: the London skyline.
“In order to find our place in the infinity of being, we must be able both to separate and unite.”
The Book of Changes.
On Thursday 28th August 2013, sunlight reflected from the so-called Walkie-Talkie on Fenchurch Street melted the trim of a Jaguar parked opposite on Eastcheap. The Sun’s rays did something similar to tiles and a doormat the following October and more recently bicycles, carpets and doors. I don’t know whether Uraguayan architect Rafael Vinoly subscribed to the notion that form follows function but if so the London Fire Brigade seem to be the principal beneficiaries.
Fenchurch Street is in the heart of the City of London, for the time being the banking centre of Europe if not the world; there are more American banks in London than any other city. The financial district pretty much occupies the streets of Roman Londinium, running East-West parallel to the River Thames. Because the Sun travels East to West, this is a nice fair orientation that distributes sunshine equally.
Although the Romans were actually developing an existing Celtic settlement (dedicated as it happens to Lug the God of Light) the City is the oldest part of London. Bishopsgate marks its historical Eastern extreme and Moorgate the Western. You can even today – equipped with a key you can request from the Museum of London – descend under the pavement a few yards from the Bank of England and inspect remnants of the original wall, still marked with ash from the sacking of the City by Budicca in 61 AD. And from Roman times onwards, the East-West Streets – London Wall, Cheapside, Cornhill – shared the Sun’s blessing. Unlike the district around Wall Street which any New Yorker can tell you, is in almost perpetual shade.
And today banks of all nationalities stretch from Southwark across the Thames to the South and Westward beyond Aldwych; you’ll find Goldman Sachs’ unmarked ivory tower on Fleet Street just beyond Ludgate Circus, well out of the traditional neighbourhood. Much of this expansion has taken place since the “Big Bang” of 1986.
The Big Bang effectively de-regulated banking; from then institutions like Northern Rock could borrow money and lend it at a loss while junk bonds and their derivatives consisting of defaulted mortgages and other toxic loans could be sold-and re-sold until the financial markets were awash with assets valued in trillions but worth less than nothing. As an investment analyst friend of mine put it then: “How do I compete with a fresh generation with the minds of Chess Grand Masters and the instincts of lampreys?” Seemed like a good idea at the time.
What also happened around then was that a succession of huge buildings started to go up to the South and South East of the City. These included the Walkie-Talkie, as well as Heron Tower and the Gherkin (aka the Swiss Re building), tributes to the egos respectively of convicted fraudster Gerald Ronson and the architect Norman Foster. Because of their location, these vast buildings began to block the light to the City. And as of today planning permission has been granted for more than a further dozen. That’s perhaps twenty more megatowers ready to be planted between the City and the Sun.
My friend Master Howard Choy would say that feng shui depends upon qing or “affection”. For architecture to work, somebody must give a damn. He condemned cutting edge super-hub Kings Cross/St Pancras for example as lacking just such attention. Common sense really. As many of you know however, for myself I’m fond of answering the request “Explain feng shui” by saying that if you plant tomatoes on a North-facing wall, you’d best not expect great salads. Light is an essential to life. It’s obvious, isn’t it that as long as we are flesh and blood we are at the effect of shade, heat and damp? And in a sense all the complexity of Classical feng shui is simply what three or four thousand years of observation have piled on top of that fact. By extension light, that is Fire, means openness, visibility, spontaneous talking and straight dealing. Shadow is its opposite.
Anyway if politics is show biz for the ugly, then maybe banking is showbiz for the anonymous. What is for sure is that if power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely then proximity to wealth breeds dishonesty, and close proximity to infinite wealth, infinite dishonesty. And just as so much of the unchecked infamy of the City and of Wall Street could not proceed without lax regulation, so greed grows in the dark. I doubt that’s what Lug had in mind.
